Oooo... the wah ah, ARGGGGG... its been something I wanna work on... Been listening to Vai or even Satriani, I realised, they use lots of gain, so dynamics (volume wise) is compromised. Moreover, in the case of Vai, the dynamics of his Evo bridge pup is well, limited, its a very compressed pup.

The magic these two men work with their wah is AMAZING. Its another way to do dynamics... so hence I decided to try out wah-ing a lot in the piece...

Whats your take on this, dynamics thing, GuitarNoob?

well, dynamics for high gain, in the case of vai, I think like you said, more or less its his wah his bends harmonics and especially his slides, theres something about his slides thats magical man. For satch, he doesnt really use high gain all the time, so yea, I think his picking does the talking, but I find he likes to legato alot for his runs, I love his use of the wah man, especially on his latest album, the 2 tracks souls of distortion and is there love in space, used at the right time and on the right notes. But most importantly, I think that its their choice of notes that makes them awesome players, Im a total noob at theory but somehow, they have their signature sound dunno how la, but like tt la haha.

I think that a wah is damn difficult to use man, not like slash or kirk anyhow up down up down the wah when the solo, but the way vai and satch uses it. They somehow can make every note sing with the wah, maybe except when vai is feeling horny and wanks too much with the wah and whammy, I think that gets kinda irritating haha

For Satch, his neck is esp low gain and dynamic... the PAF Joe is an exceptionally warm and single coil-ish humbucker... I have it. Its sitting there in its box now, its not a tone for me. I prefer a hotter lead for the neck ala Vai's.

You know, you got it right abt the Slash and Kirk wah usage... they sometimes sound like they just need an auto wah.

The wah is hard... i'm trying to experiment with using it in different positions to "speak" differently. Its hard when the Bad Horsie is a spring loaded wah and the wah curve is kind of unique: gets more pronouced nearing the end of the pedal.

Ugh. Learning hwo to play with hi gain and YET, express oneself dynamically and keep it interesting is tough.
