we have to understand that markets in places such as Australia / US / UK are so so so much more different than what we have in Singapore. first of all, the consumer base. say one out of 5 people here listen to hxc, screamo whatnot, thats probably like 800,000 people in Singapore (out of 4 mil). In australia that would roughly equate to 4.1 mil people listening to hxc etc. our market is just too small for it to be practical in mass-marketing alternative music.
secondly, our industry's maturity is nowhere compared to those elsewhere. are singaporeans willing to spend $10 to buy a cd from say Yacopsae or Under Attack? as much as there are people who listen to their music, only a small, safe to say almost insignificant number of people willing to pay for their cds. and there's always a case of when Band A breaks through the market and starts selling their CDs at HMV or appear on MTV, they're sure to lose those "fans" who stop supporting them cos they've "sold-out" or have "forgotten underground music roots".
i'd say, the future IS looking bright for the scene, but it will take time (HK's local music circle is one example), and for those who are willing to wait it out and help out with whatever they can, music, production or whatnot, be rest assured that slowly and one day, we would be taken seriously and not as "people who play music no future"
