What Does Our Local Scene Need To Prosper?

we have to understand that markets in places such as Australia / US / UK are so so so much more different than what we have in Singapore. first of all, the consumer base. say one out of 5 people here listen to hxc, screamo whatnot, thats probably like 800,000 people in Singapore (out of 4 mil). In australia that would roughly equate to 4.1 mil people listening to hxc etc. our market is just too small for it to be practical in mass-marketing alternative music.

secondly, our industry's maturity is nowhere compared to those elsewhere. are singaporeans willing to spend $10 to buy a cd from say Yacopsae or Under Attack? as much as there are people who listen to their music, only a small, safe to say almost insignificant number of people willing to pay for their cds. and there's always a case of when Band A breaks through the market and starts selling their CDs at HMV or appear on MTV, they're sure to lose those "fans" who stop supporting them cos they've "sold-out" or have "forgotten underground music roots".

i'd say, the future IS looking bright for the scene, but it will take time (HK's local music circle is one example), and for those who are willing to wait it out and help out with whatever they can, music, production or whatnot, be rest assured that slowly and one day, we would be taken seriously and not as "people who play music no future" :)

I hate that 'people who play music no future' shit man, my parents keep telling me that.. I mean its kinda common sense la, but its like a dream and they have to keep rubbing it in and pour cold water over me.

i think its how you make of it really? like everything is debatable. hmm those guys from lunarin, great spy, urbankarma, and a few others run good day jobs and yet make sweet music. its gonna take a lotta time (and luck) if you wanna be the next stefanie sun, but if you can manage both a great day job and making music, then hey, your life is made man, no matter what people say.

Drugs! Lol.. Kidding.. But seriously, scandals really makes people look more into an industry..
I think its good that local radio stations are playing more and more local music everyday.. Keeps people aware.. Although, I feel that we should have a music station JUST for local music!
But.. With the number of people who listen to the radio declining, I wonder what alternative is there to reach out to the audience..

If the radio fails, there are still the TV and the internet.

And yeah, I hate it when my parents and my girlfriend talk about the future prospects of music. All of them will say the same thing.

"You don't have a future!"

And I mean, what's so wrong about pursuing my future? If I cannot do it here, I can do it somewhere else. The world is so big. I can definitely find my own patch of grass.

And somehow, everyone's all dwelling in this "your-career-must-spin-off-money" thinking. If you are gonna make music just for the sake of money, what's the point of making music?

It's a higher level of thing.

Sex , Drugs , Rock n Roll tats the code !!
yep the respond u get frm ppl if u tell them u are pursuing music will be extremely negative! we need more marketing ,advertising , capital , fans and loads of media attention!!!

heh, theres reasons why they say no future

wait until when you are on your own, earning a living and pursuing the interest of your life while able to survive, then can talk loud, if not still LL, have to endure whatever people throw at you

music industry is a business, not interest, not holy path, it is to sell, whore and make money in order to maintain a constant path of making music.

For higher level of things, be wanky to mars and back and go round earth 6x sorta soundart artist instead..Then you can start to look at white walls while blowing air at it to symbolise the meaning of interpolation between human relation with notes and pitches

Was watching TV today (I seldom do) and one of the s-pop ads came up again and it got me thinking, Singapore actually needs more of this kinda shows.. More or less its promoting and exposing more Singaporeans to music.

We need to have a pop music industry market established first before all the other genres can start doing anything, because pop is the 'main' profit making genre. Then slowly people will start to explore other types of music.

Yes, finally, someone sees the point! Thank you, pedalite!!!

For a subculture to exist and sustain, there must be a mainstream/ commercial culture to begin with...

yep and our 'mainstream' music is so worlds away from what we rikes that there;s almost no link!!! each exists in an almost separate sphere.

talking about that... did anyone noticed that one of the CNA advert featuring The Mother's "Girl that I once knew" or something like that. yipppeee.... my favouritest local song.

anyway... clickity click here....

so why not be equal
music is still music
regardless of indie hardcore screamo metal
its still music
so why cant all of them get the same treatment
rather than being a one sided thing

the sad reality of it is that while all music is equally music, not all music is equally popular with mainstream audiences.

the same way some of you like metal and dislike, for example, trance music, other people will like Britney Spears and dislike Jay-Z, or enjoy The Love/Great Spy Experiment and dislike Protest The Hero.

the truth of the matter is that at the moment metal isn't mainstream popular. the most highly consumed markets in english music are r&b/hip-hop and pop, with indie-pop tailing behind. alternative rock, punk rock, pop punk, grunge, nu-metal they've all fallen behind since the 90s and metal isn't popular enough to be played on mainstream radiostations.

so this is why you will find that most metal bands at the moment don't get as many opportunities as bands that do pop music, or groups that do hiphop, etc.

this isn't to say you should make music just to be popular, i don't think anyone should do that. you should just keep making the music you love, and as long as you work hard to be good at what you do, someone out there will discover your music and appreciate it, and that's what it's all about.

bro serialninja bro, tt brings a tear to my eyes... How's the band doing these days?

bro edder bro, there would probably be more local songs been used for TV advts soon.

bro Flux-Us bro, what's your favourite steamboat place eh?

bro aging youth bro, the biggest question in my head now is... are they getting paid or not? or the songs all sold to Pony Canyon and thats the end of the deal?

I'm gonna skip all the replies to the thread starter's post and say this:

Everybody wants be the performer, but nobody wants to be the audience.
