What Does Our Local Scene Need To Prosper?

I'm actually only a 17 year-old guy who's studying in a JC. Not much of an expert, you can say... The only few things I can probably do are writing music and giving speeches.

Sounds good to me already. We did our first show when we were your age back in school. Of course, for utterly non-altrustic reasons... Ai pak band, boh gig. Gaki zoh gig lai pak. There are very few Dodgy Gig Organisers™ who do it purely out of passion...

But on an another hand, how many people will support if there's a music movement-a campaign to increase the people's awareness of local music?

Prolly, not a lot. There's loads of things done before. There will be loads of things coming up.

I think we need to define "prosper" first.

It is:

1. Better musicians/bands/music ?

2. More audience?

3. Better money for musicians/bands?

Once we get #1 done, we will move on to #2 and hopefully #3.

I think probably prosper as in Money. If we didnt want to 'make it' with money then we should already be pretty satisfied with our scene.

Music wise I think bands are churning out pretty good stuff. Just that maybe alot of bands make demos and don't really have the money/time/resources to get a proper recording done.

More audience would defnitely make the whole experience more fun! :D
So I think there isn't actually any 'problem' other than maybe #2.. More Audience.

What could help is if people become more active during gigs. Everyone kinda stones at small gigs.. The bands also feel discouraged.

Not enough local gigs? I remember a couple years back, the Gigs and Concerts section used to be full of big foreign acts. Now its all local shows! :D

pedialite, you are right!

We cannot force people to like our music. What to do? We simply make music that people like to hear!

The problem is, alot of us don't know/want to do that.

When we play the kind of music the masses want, the audience pool will increase and we will be able to make some money from it.

It is like cooking laksa that people like as compared to cooking laksa the way we like. ah-ha.. ;)

Marketing better music is easier than marketing good music.

Currently, we have too much hype about local music already. Just like local movies, we need to produce content that CAN sell.

"Ah Long Pte Ltd" and "881" are good examples of entertainment business.

reviews of ah long were quite scathing, but it earned abt 1.47 million over CNY. Good marketing or ppl were just too bored over the festive period?

anyways, here's something for all Dimebag fans.

Actually why does anyone want to play music for the audience? Unless you're a pub band or part of the mainstream music industry. Just play what you want to play.

btw i second the sentiments on friday Life, and most of the folks in sph. They wouldn't know music if it came and pooped in their diapers.

So judgemental... Obviously, you do not know the music journalists/ editors which work in Life!

Sometimes, I wonder what is that ugly look which the jazz and classical music enthusiasts give when they catch all these rockers rocking their balls out on stage. Must be that we dunno music too...

Black Dahlia Murder has members that aren't exactly fit. :/
Come to think of it, most metal bands actually have really muscular dudes!
MANOWAR!!!! HAHAHA!

hehe and neither would i want to, professionally that is, since the only way to write about music in a newspaper catered for the masses is to precisely narrow down the context to the lowest common denominator.

err... if you dont want to play for the audience then the bands DO NOT need to play at gigs at all. Just jam in the studio and be merry.

You really need to get to know who's who in the industry. See, you already made a BIG mistake with your comment about the SPH writers. They ARE musicians! Haiz...

10 years ago, they were like you and me, talking about how the local music scene is bad and stuff. Well, they studied hard and worm their way into SPH. Thanks to them, we have so much hype about local music in the mass media.

Could more be done? Sure! That's where WE (meaning you, cos I am already SOFTing) come in.;)
