in my humble opinion, i think there are a few reasons y we are not getting far (if u define far as global recognition)
1) uniqueness, most of the bands i see in gigs who do originals hav quite forgettable sounding songs (what i feel), those bands who actually stand out here do possess certain unique qualities, in the sense that once u hear them, w/o looking at them you know their identity, eg. electrico, ronin and a handful of others
2) most of the time, there is a tinge of "cheena" in most of the singers' voices, nth racist but its that true ang-moh voice that sets the standard for english songs to be recognised globally, and u cannot doubt that, thats y those chinese pop bands wadeva trying to put engrish words into their songs really send horrible chills up your spine
3) super cliche sounding band names, i think i dont have to elaborate on that
in terms of government support, i think the gov itself doesnt really give much encouragement, its more of different organisations who are trying to encourage the local music scene
for now all i can say that as a band, one should set its standard to be well recognised locally first, achieving that is a fantastic goal already
not being a pessimist or anything, i would obviously like to see local bands records being swarmed off from shelves internationally, but what i state is what i am observing now
