spore local music scene..

Having been on a couple of sides of the music industry - used to play in band, used to write music columns - I must say that this discussion is quite exciting and accurate (er, except for the dude that keeps talking about peanuts - does he have a share in a peanut factory?)

Anyway, you are all right about the state of the local music scene. The media don't know what's out there except what they've been told: The Obs, Electrico, Ronin, Concave, etc, only get to the newspapers because someone told the papers about them.

If you want to make it big as in U2 big, forget it. Not here. Singaporean audiences are not ready for original music becos they have been "fed" by overseas music.

It's true we may not have that deep a history, but there is still an interesting history - just that nobody knows about it. So how to write about stuff if you don't know about it? How can you draw on all that emotion?

You want to play Singapore blues? Imagine yourself as a foreign construction worker waiting to make enough money so that you can finally go home to your family, your woman, your dog.

Or imagine yourself as retrenched worker with a family to feed, but cannot get work because (too old/not trained/etc) must sell everything he has just to put food on the table. And then he reads about ministers who earn 2.2 million cannot give some back to the people who voted for them? Heck, even if you put $10 ang pow to every person in the constituency, you still have enough to live comfortably for the rest of the year.

That's the sort of thing that other successful bands have written about.

Also since nobody apparently (even the musicians) seem to think that music can be a profession, few have made the effort to be professional (either in terms of playing or attitude).

You want to make it? Get a manager who's interested in promoting your music and get to know the right people: promoters, producers, media (especially), and be prepared to slog it out. Go to M'sia, Thailand, Indonesia and play there. See what that's like.

So there. My five-cents worth. By the way, any of you musos out there can give me a buzz - I am compiling a feature about local music scene and what bands/artistes out there are interesting. Drop me a PM here.

..

its weird when papers feature

"Singapore's very own Elvis"
or
"Singapore's very own Guns N Roses"

but we don't have "USA's very own Electrico"

can't but can chop it up, add onions, garlic, ginger, potatoes and make a pretty evil DOXTAIL Soup.

we need someone with a big position in the media world to risk it and feed the society with local music. well, good local music of course. We need a REAL LOCAL radio station. Now we only have LOCAL SEGMENTS...wtf? the society here sucks too.

I mean look at India, the bollywood scene is so strong, they dont listen to other forms of music except for their own homebred songs! And have u seen their metalfest there, the support was amazing. Quite a huge turnout and stuff.

Indonesia, strong support for their dangdut fest and shit.

Malaysia, Artists in Malaysia like siti nurhaliza can be rich!! which is not the case in singapore whereby we struggle most of the time playing our originals.

Everywhere else in the world is a better place to play ur own music. Its horrible! oh well, 40-50 yrs down the road, singapore will be underwater so cheers to that. may our future generation shine overseas.

Oh I might just add on that, even supporters of local gigs here look forward to covers. I've seen a band with an empty crowd.

"We're gonna play |famous cover song|"....
....2 seconds later, the whole place is filled...knn

tsk tsk tsk.

Bands need to do more regional work. They need more good songs. They need to be more media savvy. All can be done in due time but teachinng the media here is another thing. Hopefully that can be circumvented with the Internet and regional touring and airplay.

And we don't have enough local music to have a radio station dedicated to local music. At issue is who the djs are and how they choose the songs they play. Good taste in music doesn't come easy for lots of people.

What I think may work for the station and help the musicians is for a more targeted radio programming scheme for local music.

There should be enough local music for Club Music, Alternative, Metal, Acoustic, and perhaps Rock. Each programme runs for an hour or so and each dedicated to a specific genre.

Cheers

We tot of doing our own podcasts before... segmenting it into different genres. But to be honest, we were too lazy... Hurhurhur~

bro christoh bro, up your points! Hope you like the CDs!!

I don't think there's enough material out there to have ongoing weekly shows of 1 hour each for every genre before it starts rehashing material from the same band.

And yes people in other countries are really comfortable in their own skin. Singapore is essentially a migrant society. We're actually in a very unique position of being able to fuse different aspects of ethnic music together, but in the end we're only concerned with aping the dominant musical trends that get broadcasted/transmitted by the media. So why would anyone want to support a copy when they can get the real thing overseas? And what little support bands get over here is limited by the amount of wallets, warm bodies and talent, so there's no reason for any media business to take up anyone.

..

aping's fine and dandy... out of all the carbon copies, there's bound to be some bands who realise the world beyond their well and grow out of it. attrition rate will be high, but its those whom we want yeah.

shermanas: And yes people in other countries are really comfortable in their own skin. Singapore is essentially a migrant society.

I thought the US and A is the world's ultimate migrant society but they seem to be dominating all of our culture these days. I mean, fer f uck's sake, a Kazakhstani reporter even went there to report on its magnificent cultural leanings!
