spore local music scene..

If that's the case, then hasn't The Observatory/The Great Spy Experiment/Electrico fulfilled the criteria of being known overseas and "staying on for a long time" (ok, perhaps not Great Spy as of yet, but certainly for the other two)? The overhyping thing once again is a subjective matter.

The problem with the music scene, and arts scene in Singapore in general, is
that no one has anything genuine to express. It's all a bland imitation of music
that has it's roots elsewhere in the world.
The Singaporean culture is as of today a shallow culture with no historical
connection to the island itself. It's a manufactured society build on top of a
piece land, and all the culture is imported(both idea-wise & resource-wise), not
raised from the land itself.
Dears Sirs, if Singapore wants to make a name for itself in the arts, Singapore
first has to find out where it belongs within itself.
You can not express yourself if you have no identity.

u cant say no one, there are at least a few bands here thats original. Oh well, the path for our local musicians is opening soon, I hope.

try to be the worst musician ever...that will garner you alot of publicity...
serious..

Aiyah already been done. Recpie is to play blatantly lifeless music with a guitar with open tunings and strum and pluck. Then pretend to be a singer. Then have someone re-create noise on some non-musical instrument. Then have some drums and pretend even more that you're all in a band. Dude! Been done and in Singapore's terms they already made it. Sad but true.

It's all a bland imitation of music
that has it's roots elsewhere in the world.
DUde! This is the 21st century. Our roots come from TV, the radio and MP3s. Forget about doing an African/World music thingy here - we're not poor enough. Our ministers are the highest paid in the world and we have no poverty! How to sing about slavery, poverty, redemption and stuff like that???

Perhaps in 20-30 years' time when your children have no jobs because we have an over-crowded island with politicians too busy counting their bank account transactions to care for the poor and the citizens.

Seriously, Asian ethnic music isn't going to be a major hit like African music. There is simply no major Asian icon that has made worldide headlines. The Africans had Mandela. Bishop Tutu, apartheid etc. - Those worldwide news made people curious to know more about Africa and to get to know their music was one way of getting to know Africans.

Our only icons are LKY, his son, their world-conquering salaries and perhaps our airport and our port. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised to see those being part of our culture in due time.

Music please, ... .

so if i ask you, would you be able to tell me what good music is?

Aiyah bro, give me a good reason why what I tell you is important to you?

You should know what is good music. If it is good to you then it is good to you.

At issue is whether it is good to others?

Cheers
