spore local music scene..

..

yeah man. more gigs, more exposure, more egos bloated, busted, then upped again, more local hero worship, marketing and feeding the myth!

Bro edder bro, she's one of the alumni committee members of some NUS Internet radio thing. Hurhurhur~

You into radio, bro edder bro?

An hour-long programme needs about 35 minutes of songplay with the rest of the time taken for ads, dj talking and interviews. 56 weeks in a year means we need about 28 hours in total for music from each genre. Some rehash is fine for a call-in/dj selection each week. I'm sure there is enough, including archival and past works. Highly doable if you add songs from unrecorded bands - MySpace and some live recordings - as long as they meet certain recording standards.

you guys talk so much but forget there is already an hour long radio show playing local music already. 987home on 98.7fm saturdays 7-8pm. that's quite a prime slot as well. and they are open to all genres of music, meza virs has gotten airplay before.

so why is it that so few seem to know of the show? could it be that all those complaining about lack of radio airplay for local bands dont actually bother to listen to radio themselves?

I think most know of it but don't bother to tune in. A niche programme will do better in gettin gthe right people to listen to the music. I would dread tuning in only to find that it's not the type of music I like.

Since folks listen to what they like and most people are pretty much predisposed to not listening to stuff form genres that they don't like or only like stuff from genres that they like then that is the best way to expose Singaporeans to music made here - music that has a high chance of them liking it for its worth.

Many things have been done. But many things were done without much success. Better tuning, planning, execution and one that is concerted and long-running is what is required.

The point is this - music is getting better here. But as long as the mainstream media is not there to do a good job then it gets more difficult. If we can make an unknown, a decently good singer in Taufik famous and sell 30,000+ English albums, then it is obvious that Singapore can create its own very good band/music. But you need the mainstream media to get into the act and to know what it is that they're doing.

Any major international band would have problems making it if it was so difficult for them to get mainstream media recognition and airplay.

radio?! ya right ...my 15 yrs of checkin local tunes on radio has been poops ...i think soft radio does a better job...

btw lets see local gigs aired on tv like how they do it in our neighbouring countries !!

Personally i don't think any genre except for the boyband pop of taufik or chinese pop like sun the ho will garner album sales in excess of 30k.

I'd prefer an online podcast than radio airplay.

What'd you prefer: someone who does radio airplay/ podcast for money and stops doing it after a few weeks when he/ she realises that there's no money to be made or someone who slogs at it for years just for the fun of it...? Discuss. [25 marks]
