Hi guys, I'm kinda new around here. Saw the thread and thought I'll start here since I'm an LP man as well.
I've got a Gibson LP Custom, cherry sunburst. Has a pair of Alnicos. I've also a 1987 Ibanez law-suit LP copy which comes with some Gibson humbuckers (not sure what they are, but they are labelled underneath as such).
I think I saw a msg about the difference between the real thing and a copy? Well essentially it depends on the type of wood used on the copy and the pickups. I realised my Lp custom has loads of sustain and warmth, not to mention power, great for Jazz, blues and rock etc. The Ibanez in comparison has less warmth and sustain and a bit trebly. However it has its own unique tone which is great for rock as well. To be fair, the ibanez is quite different since the body has holes and is not a solid piece(to make it lighter) and its bolt-on.
However, I personally think (omitting workmanship), if your copy has the same wood as the real thing, similar pickups, and is set-neck, you should be able to get a similar tone. However if u're talking abt customs and above, then maybe due to the age and selection of the wood used by Gibson for them, it might be different. Then again, I've seen the EQ pedal do wonders...
