But it's interesting to see someone so young taking such great interest in lyrics. I used to be like that but now, I couldn't give a rat's arse lah...

hehe, why our future leaders so much angst and ideas nowadays har.

so, whats the locale bands you think that have potential and what kinda local band music wud you like to listen?

Lol, I'm not angry lah, maybe the way I type I sound very stuck-up, cocky and pissed off, but you know, the price of communicating like that.

I dont know, I'm sure there are local bands with potential, but I just can't seem to find any. Believe me when I say I really want to support local music, but it's hard without any bands to motivate me.

What kind, well I really dont know, I dont expect Singapore to come up with groundbreaking music.
Like I remember Baybeats had this one Malaysian band called Furniture, they weren't completely original, but I liked their music and bought their CD, and if they performed in Singapore again and I had time to kill I would go and see them.
Any kind to be honest, what I just want to avoid are bands trying to fit into a certain scene, like punk rockers, goths, glam rockers, classic rockers, "indie" artsy people. Because usually these kind of bands try hard to fit their sound into a mold, which destroys their music, not saying that it could have been good to begin with.

heh, furniture at baybeats 2006 is much more toned down than the couple of shows they did here the years before. I like furniture too.

oh, on ground breaking music, why sorta wud you define as groundbreaking?

the problem with sg's music industry is the fans. they are not exposed to local underground rock music. if there are more fans, there would be more record and more record labels for rock music and the bands would make money. so would the record companies. and if they have money, they can let the bands travel world-wide and get recognition to people from other countries

Um like Modest Mouse, their older stuff was amazing.

Perhaps I should rephrase, since it's hard enough to find any groundbreaking band.

Ok, I dont expect any Singaporean band to make me say to myself "Wow this really good" and put them on my playlist and put their songs on loop.

And to reckless, it is the industry. As in, the bands itself, the ones that the industry decides to make popular would really be nobodies world-wide.
It's the industries fault that they dont expose good bands, or maybe it's the lack of good bands.
It's hard to know because the entire Singapore music scene is retarded in the sense you really have to look if you want to listen to local music, and it's not even that good in the first place.

i is see.

other than baybeats, do you go to any core gig, soundart gig, metale gig or indie gig?

If you mean local stuff, then no.
Everything I hear about stuff on soft, usually its like those "<insert word here>core, "pop-punk", "metal", basically stuff that I dont appreciate.

If I had actually heard about a gig in a genre that I would like ,I would go and check it out if I had the time.

...

I like the local scene as it is. We've got some bands who in my opinion are better than some very well-known foreign acts. The kind of bands who you'd think if they were born anywhere but here, they'd be doing much better than they are. Bands like the Stoned Revivals, Force Vomit, the Observatory, Tiramisu, ShameJoanneShame, Elise, the Pinholes, I love. But in any scene, anywhere in the world, there would inevitably be more crap bands than good ones. And it's no different here.

I think a lot of local bands are too impatient. They don't give themselves enough time to mature in terms of song-writing. These bands I've mentioned have been at it for years. And it shows. New bands on the other hand write a bunch of songs, play gigs and expect to get recognition with their under-developed songs. Originality aside, I do agree with Blank that many of these bands' songs don't even sound good, lacking a good hook, riff or melody. I guess all I can say is, if you don't like what you hear, don't listen.

I  selective listening.

:)

I have noticed that actually - there are a lot of Soft users who are into "<insert word here>core, "pop-punk", "metal". But don't base your opinions of local music on these bands la bro. There are so many other kinds of local bands out there, playing different kinds of music.

MySpace is a godsend. One of my favourite pastimes, when I'm on mc like I am today, is band-hopping on MySpace. Start with one band and just keep checking out their 'friends'. You'll get to sample so many local bands' music that way, all from the comfort of your own home.

My recommended starting point: www.myspace.com/pinholes

Long live rock n roll! :)

you might like to try going to a gig without having the genre thought. Seat thru the gig, feel the music and groove on the spot instead of having the genre i like kinda thot. Maybe it will be something new

unknowningly and uneasiness of dealing with something that we dont like, sometime make us appreaciate even a simple ii v i progression

imho
cheers :D
