How good are our local PRO musicians??

you wanna know whats the problem with Singapore....go read Brave New World...:D

There is some good music in Singapore, but I find great music stems from one's Culture and one's own Inspiration...ever checked up on what yours is?

I cant speak Mandarin or understand any...but some Chinese music kicks ass...

The lack of marketing is one of the biggest factor of bands here not being famous. But can we blame the marketing people when we know that the population here 1)is so small 2)stigma against local bands and 3)little media/radio support?

If I was in the marketing business, I would also think twice before putting a lump sum aside to market a local act without government subsidy/aid.

haha... the environment singaporeans grow up in is pop and hip hop.. I still remember in Secondary school... I go DREAM THEATER!! they go usher?

negative vibes are unneccessary. If you don't believe in it, have faith in it, or care about it enough to contribute to it, then why be a part of the scene?

That's not surprising. What would be surprising would be in lower secondary school, someone goes, "The Suns!", "Electrico!", "B Quartet" etc.

That would be something...

I totally agree..it's just that with our type of education system, where students have to mug and mug and mug in order to have a "bright and prospective" future, they don't really have the time to improve their talents or do anything that's more on the creative side.

Also more typical Singaporean parents are totally stuck in the Singaporean stigma that kids will have no future doing something that doesn't involve a top Secondary school or a top JC or going to a top Uni to study some science or math or whatever.

this kind of thing takes time i suppose. In actual fact before the huge recession in 1998, local music was actually widely supported. radio stations played local music, people liked local music. but after the recession everything went down. probably because of the lack of funds to produce more.

But we all have to admit it's improving a really great deal now after 10 whole years! 987FM is playing a lot of local music. lush995 plays a lot of stuff from The Observatory. class 95 plays local music from time to time.

Front is created in view of promoting local arts. etc etc etc...

Local gigs (Baybeats, Lime Sonic Bang, Stasis, etc.) are getting bigger and bigger responses.

The media is supporting local music more than we know.

I am sure local musicians have some up to standard or very good ones. And they usually are the malays. Not that i am bias, but most malays guitarists are so good but generally unappreciated. There might be a few angmohs who are good too locally, especially those that wear a cap around. We might expect better music in future.

Bro, I believe not all of us here are 'part of the scene'. Some are just consumers and music lovers, who wish to see more. And they see the potential.

Music is an art and a product of creative processes, definitely not of an exclusive nature. Most of the time, it's intended to serve some sort of purpose, mostly for other people to enjoy and appreciate.

I've always believed in listening to feedback with the objective of improving whatever is created. It may not lead to changing just for the sake of pleasing others who demand certain things, but when things are taken into perspective - usually you'll find some truth in an opinion.

What I personally like to see is, generally good songwriting. Mainstream musicians and artistes, if you notice, stay long because of songs people can remember and enjoy for a long time. It is as simple as that. No matter if you are like an ass like Axl Rose or Yngwie Malmsteen, or as 'saintly' as Bono, as weird as Michael Jackson, as retarded as Britney Spears - people will remember their music like forever. People will still cover their songs everywhere in the world till this day. Of course, some of them don't write their own songs lah but the songs they sing represent the whole team behind that name.

No matter if you are like a self-proclaimed indie musician for life, or mainstream is too dumb for you, or you revel in the so-called intellectual and very creative self-creations, it is still best to please both camps. Just like Nirvana, Foo Fighters and the like.

Just my personal humble opinion, as always.

:-D

I've been told by my Singaporean friends that the local radio stations barely or never plays local music. Is this true?

singapore musos ARE good.......

good that you posted this query,

as a semi pro musician toiling the circuit for the past 12 years i can vouch for our sigaporean bros/sisters.

i have played with lots of foreign musicians, shitloads of aussies, russians, americans, polish, iceland, swedish...malaysians...yeah those musos know more as they were exposed to music early on in life BUT the sinapore musician is better prepared, talented, hardworking, meticulous and have good ears.

brian colaco - what happened to him?

well if i owned a nightspot i'd hire a fat hairy man in a bikini playing the same chord again and again and making orgasming noises if it got hundreds of people coming to buy drinks.

the ends justify the means! unfortunately but realistically most of the real world doesn't care for musicianship.

I do agree with what you have to say! =)

Ya man, in the real world - lots of people have a very shallow perception of 'creative' things in general.

Either they are too lazy to see through the subtle layers of intention, intellectual ideas or whatnot or they simply do not know what it takes to come out with something like that. And I suspect they don't really care too. The fact that music's overall commercial value is not substantial - people tend to take it for granted, as compared to a genuine Picasso or Rembrandt.

They usually think "I can buy a CD at S$12.99 and it's got 12 songs in it. I can go to three pubs and I've got a choice of three fantastic live bands at a cost of a jug of beer each. I think so much about music for what?".

Just like a lot of visual art around us, commercial or otherwise - the fact that it's produced en masse, and that not many people (at least in Singapore, I think) can really appreciate the differences between the creative products, kinds of 'cheapens' it.

Lots of people take these types of things at face value.
