if you know the implications, the presence of stereotyping and prejudice, the restrictions in times of formality, but cant give a rats ass because you're into it, then go ahead with it.

But what happens when you're sure, you've decided, you know what you want, you have the money, but the only implication is... PARENTAL objection? =\

Because no matter how old you get, you're still their kid, and under their rule.

Sad to say, my mom says she'll disown me, throw me out of the house, never acknowledge me again, don't have to ever call her mom etc if I get a tattoo.

But then again she said the same thing about a navel piercing and I went ahead to get it and she didn't say much... =\

AH, parents are so fickle.

SO what would you do? Screw it and get one anyways?

well, i'm the first one in my family to get a tattoo and i'm the youngest. heh. i didn't even bother asking my parentals. just went ahead to do it. then, one of my brothers found out. and one day, i asked my mom (after already getting it done.)

me: mom, can i get a tattoo?
mom: NO.
me: okay.
*brother walks in*
mom: your sister says she wants a tattoo.
brother: what want? already have!
mom: WHAT? show me.
me: *shoves hand in front of mom*
mom: *quiet*

tadaaaaaaaa!

so yeah. it's just a matter of whether you're rebellious enough of not. if you're like Daddy or Mommy's boy/girl, i guess it's better to ask them. if they say no, then decide for yourself what you want to do.

you do all these stuff to just to look cool? to appease yourself for a few days or weeks?
considering all the stuff you have to go through, i dont think it worth it

you can dont care the implications for now, but what makes you think you wont regret it in the future?

LOL, just remember to cover up the multiple tattoos & piercings when you go apply for a job.
Imagine someone go apply for a teacher's job and comes to school with many piercings and tattoos. ;)
And would you buy from a salesman/woman with tattoos and piercings?
At least dyed hair is accepted as a social norm.

Well... I have never thought tattoos are cool. I have the tendency to associate them with poser kids who follows trends and anything that is cool.

I guess it's up to you. Unlike cigarettes, tattoos aren't bad for society; the only bad thing can only happen to the tattoo's owner. Just be aware of the consequences, which the other posts have mentioned.

in the conservative island we call our home, tattoos are still considered somewat tabooo. i agree with wat the last post mentioned in understanding wat can happen. alot of small minded people out there.
i feel tattoos are a form of art and self expression like glass sculpting or ice carving, alittle left of center but art none the less.
i dunno if i wld call the younger kids with tattoos poseurs though, they might be showing them off but its self expression in a way.

no tattoo is different from glass sculpting or ice carving. unlike glass sculpting or ice carving, you are not the artist creating the piece of art, when you are getting a tattoo you are just the glass in glass sculpting, the ice in ice carving. You didnt design the tattoo, you simply bought it. I dont see any artistic significance in that

talking about self expression,
what kinda message do you wanna send to public that cannot be express in words or other actions ,that you have to go such extent of doing something to your body that is irreversible? Judging from the present situation, and since you guys are frequently being misunderstood by the masses. Do you think that this form of self expression is effective as a form of self expression?

just my 2 cents

wow tht felt more like 4cents worth.

i disagree with tht is not artistic expression, some tattoos represent or say something abt tht person.
some things cannot be expressed in words, thts why some people play music and some get tattoos. before u say how useless tattoos are tense ur cheek muscles and dun.
well i yes i do think its a valid form of self expression.
people get tattoos for different reasons some to look gd, some to express themselves, some to buy a piece of art like a painting.

"you guys are frequently being misunderstood by the masses"
which mass, the world mass, the world is bigger with alot more ideas than just singapore. i'm not knocking singapore i love singapore but sometimes the single mindedness is quite irritating. i think tht misconception is changing with the younger generation. their young not stupid. and wat makes u think i have a tattoo? did someone with a tattoo tramatise u as a child? u sound abit bitter abt the tattoo thing my gd man.

i reckon chill out hi fi killer, when rock and roll first arrived they thought it was from hell as well. live and let live, if people want a tattoo its no big deal, their not hurting anyone. now if this thread was on something like serial killers then yes we shld do away with them.

Well i think a tattoo is a committment to something you believe in and is very personal. If you are going to change your mind about what you have tattooed after a couple of years (as have many of my friends) or if you just wanna look cool, dont bother. The people who so fondly adorn themselves usually have a very interesting and lasting sense of pride and satisfaction in the tattoo they have. ITS NOT A FASHION STATEMENT.(to me anyway)

Also do consider the society we live in. The straightjacketed culture that we find ourselves in strictly dictates that to be successful or not frowed upon by the aunties in the bus, we should have neatly parted hair, be always clean shaven, have no piercings and never sport any form of body art lest we be deemed "beng"

And lastly Tribal tattoos, butterflies and fairies are an effin' dime a dozen

peace

well, you're not the artist but you certainly are the canvas.

therefore IMO, tattoos are a form of art. your skin is the canvas and the ink is the paint.
