Opinions on emo

better to just call them post-hardcore right? since we're on the subject of genres. seriously.. genres are dead, the author is dead. everyone is dead! we all just exist as simulcra in each other's minds.. none of this is real.. life is a disease we're dying from.

(time to read some frenchy-philosophers - life is shit, get to know it)

I think emo music should be called melodic hardcore.

And there was this guy who said when punk music came out, it spelt the end of true music or something along that line? Please...when punk music came out, it created another type of music people could listen to. Punk music saved music I say. Without it, hip hop and cRap would have dominated tons of teenagers' head.

Emo fashion is characterised by teens wearing dark T-shirts, a little undersized or deliberately worn down to look old. Their choice of sneakers is Converse canvas shoes.

what the hell strait times? i think your journalist need to do some big major research on Chuck Taylors before you talk abt those sneakers.

plus points to above author!!!

exactly what i said. more research needs to be done. and less generalizing please.

and people, why do you all always associate emo guys to kissing fellow emo guys? they just happen to be gay/bi/whatever. (there isn't such thing as bi, they're just greedy. heehee.) but anyway, yeah, they just happen to like the fashion and kiss guys. that doesn't make them emo. so if you can say that emos are people who kiss people of the same sex, can i say that people who are naturally gay are emo too?

it is good that this issue is highlighted in the mass media. this way, more people will know about it. i think the ST article was associating the EMO more towards social/community rather than music.

youth are the same in every generation. there are always some kids who behave themselves and some try a little wild stuff. the problem is, when they are in it, they won't know if it is good or bad. it just satisfy their wants at the moment.

we as musicians should never talk bad about another genre which we do not like.

..

its amusing to see so many brickbats come out the moment a newspaper article comes out. passion yes. direction no?

its equally amazing that music equates to lifestyle.

shouldn't it be music = life or life = music?

ooohhhhmmmmhhhoooooo

panz3rr, if you listen to the music by listening to the music alone. it is the same as any poprock genre. if you are classically trained, you can even break down the music into parts.

you can try to bypass the words in the music and just listen to it as the melody.

i know it is not something easily done but can try lah. can increase your musical vocabulary.

basically, the point i want to make here is that cutting isn't associated with emo kids. period.

they are people who do not dress like how we the so called "emokids" who constantly cut themselves. for reasons i do not wish to elaborate on. yes, i agree that the way we dress do sometimes give people the impression that "hey i'm so emo. i cut myself all the time. slit my wrists and cut my throats cause the whole world hates me." but in actual fact, how many of us are like that? no much, i can say.

i saw chinese girls of age about 13-15 having cuts all over their hands and arms, for the whole world to see. this is attention seeking. cutting because they want to "fit in" and because it's "oh-so-cool". so now... are they emo too? no right?

i just hope that people would not generalize so quickly and forget to weigh the situations here.

so yeah.

XbatupahatisthereasonX is the best band in the world. Although i have not heard a single song but they are the most powerful band for not releasing a single song and yet be so emotionally intense!

cos we're emo like that. we don't play gigs. we don't release albums. we don't write songs.

its all related to the age of the listeners. Its a phase.

When i was 16-18 i started playing the blues(because i felt emo)and tattooed most of my body as a release from the erm "pain".

its part of growing up la. :D No need to hate anyone here.

cheers

Yup...looks emo to me !!

the public opinion of emo is like the public opinion of metal then.

when I was a kid and could still fit into tight black denim... i did. my closet only had one colour and its black. they either had metallica/anthax/slayer/morbidangel yadda yadda yadda.

my parents and my classmates thought i was a satanist and I played to their fears.

so its just a fricken nu thing to talk about, curse and generally be "misunderstood". Damn you emo'ers... we metalheads were much misunderstood before you guys are now!

so no big deal on the article. you guys are going to grow up and life will still go on, get a corporate job and earn money to buy more gear if you're still in to music.

most anti corporate punkers/HC ethics this ethics that i used to know are working in MNC, garmen positions and others that they deemed evil.

So what? Go figure.

goose infidel. :D

I agree with everything edder said....metalheads used to get more shtick than now...during the 70's-80's? the garmen also banned long hair...teenage angst....its all a phase, one day they will realise that emo(not the fashion culture) by itself cannot cook rice..must have good jobs to spend moolah and time on the local music industry then to diss the current trends :D

oh no!! now that i see myself lookin emo

i am much more concerned on whats next ....

btw.. at times my post here are like commercial breaks ...hate em but you need em....cheers mate !!
