Multi-effects or Individual stompboxes?

Precisely. My basic board style:

high-gain > overdrive > delay

I'm beginning to find high-gain, delay and overdrive very essential for the alternative stuff I play.

High pleasant smooth gain is one thing. High in-yo-mama's-face-i-pwn-your-mother fuzz gain is another. Personally, I feel that the moment you step on a metal muff, your genres are immediately limited to a hand full and good luck on doing smooth mouth-watering leads with it. Its an exceptional riffing pedal for metal and maybe a good booster for certain applications but that's basically it because it's ugly and it only looks very good when ugly is needed.

simplicity - zakk wylde signature mxr od.

as a booster that is.but dont expect it to be able to distort a clean channel.

I would like to see you use the Metal Muff for all applications...

Get different pedals for different situations lah.. Can't find a pedal that can do all sorts of tones for ya.. And an uber metal isn't that versatile anyways..
A metal muff is good for rhythm, and the top boost is present when you need to cut through the mix during live performances, although the lead tone with the top boost leaves much to be desired..

... but that's basically it because it's ugly and it only looks very good when ugly is needed.

I had to laugh at that, lol. I personally have never been impressed by Metal Muff. I pretty much dislike fuzz boxes, but that's just me.

Multifx with single pedals for distortion/drive and eq for me.

I don't like fuzz either actually, I kinda prefer thick, heavy high-gain tone. For that my floor pod delivers with its treadplate amp mode. Its modelled after a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, so yeah, for distortion, I'd rather rely on a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier or some similar high-gain tube amp.

Oh yes, I use the Dual Rectifier model on my Pod X3 Live excessively also. I should add that its quite dynamic for a multi effects patch...

Yeah! Its actually even more dynamic than anything my Uber metal can offer. Can easily play death / doom metal and sound great! Very thick, powerful tube sound.

I'm becoming a nut for Line 6 Multi-effects! But their stompboxes, nope. Not compatible with this and that.

hey... any boss gt8 users in here? do u find the need to engage the OD/dist effect on your unit? i was a bit surprised i dont need it anymore considering the amount of gain the preamps have... or im just imagining things... hahaha... =)

never used a gt-8, but i've used gt-6 from 2006 until now and i had no problem with it..

it's quite easy to carry for show's or even jamming session..

good enough for me..

used to have a gt6 b4... the tones r a bit harsh and metallic... the preamps are unusable... changed to gt8.. everything sounds organic and natural... the preamps are really nice... solo function is really useful... i dont find the need to use the OD/dist effects anymore... =)

A sophistiated multi-effects unti like the gt-8/10 and pod x3 would enable the modelled amp to react to an od/drive unit before it realistically.

Its true the gain etc for the amp model is great etc. That will also be the case if you had the exact same amp with similar settings. But then again, some people like the way stacked gain works/respond or a mixture of pedal gain vs amp gain, or for a boost during solos etc. When I do rhythm, I use a compressor into a cranked up amp (pod x3) for the chug. When i do lead, I'll actually use the pod's comp into my real drive pedals and into a fairly cranked amp setting on my pod for a sweeter and rounder overall sound. Sounds terrible if I plugged this into a guitar amp though. Its cool only on flat monitors because I use a pair of flat response headphones to tweak the sound!

is it possible to have a few effects switched on at the same time (eg. od,fuzz, delay, flanger) on a gt8? how many effects can i use at 1 go?

I'm not sure how the gt-8 actually works, but it shouldn't be too far off other multi effect units in its range. All i know is usually, one effect per slot can be switched on, eg 1 overdrive can be switched on at once, not a ds-1 mt-2 etc at the same time. Same for modulations, so either chorus or flanger but not both. The usual chain looks something like this:

Noise gate -> od -> efx loop -> amp/cab -> modulation -> comp -> EQ -> reverb -> delay. There might be more or the pedal might allow you to swtich the order but that's basically the common function of multi effects.
