Manchester United 2008-2009 Season Thread

Am I the only one who see signing Owen as a pretty decent move? Risky, yes, but since when was risk absent in any transfers made?

Honestly, I wouldn't have done the same if I were Fergie, but I would rather choose to focus on the positives of the getting Owen. I mean, like saying anything would change the fact that he's been signed, anyway.

1. Michael Owen is a proven goal scorer at the highest level. The statistics speak for themselves.
2. He's still on the right side of 30.
3. Injury-plagued, but mostly 'cos he was rushed back into action by Newcastle. With a little more time and patience, he'll only get fitter and stronger.
4. He might not be as fast as he was in his Liverpool days, but he still has that predatory instinct.
5. With Tevez, Rooney, and even Berbatov, they were always dropping deep. Owen would be that player always in the box waiting for a quality cross/pass to come in.
6. The younger strikers (Macheda and Welbeck) will only benefit from training with Owen.
7. He wouldn't whine if he's played from the bench.

I totally agree with jeepers.I can only see the Owen signing as a plus.Forget about the injuries and stuff. This is the only time I've seen Owen injured so much so I would believe the Newcastle medical team were to blame.

Lets see what number he wears cause Im yet to see him wearing the jersey bearing a number.

Would it be possible that the no. 7 jersey will be bestowed upon Rooney and the no. 10 is given to Owen? ;)

In any case, I just hope Ferguson knows something we don't. I can't deny that Owen has the potential to be a breakthrough with United...as long as he remains injury-free. Who wouldn't want a Rooney-Owen pairing? If it works, I'm sure Capello will be pleased.

I believe the number 7 is assigned to Valencia.Plus the number 10 cant be easily given to a player cause the number is associated with the great Sir Bobby Charlton though he himself have dawned the number 7 and 9.

owen will score against liverpool's sorry ass next season

You got that right!

Yea, forget about the fact that Owen is injury-prone. He's going to get the best medical team at Man Utd & the best care from Fergie.

Even through his injury-plagued days at Newcastle, he still managed to score a decent amount of goals. That boy is a natural finisher. I strongly believe under Fergie's care & with excellent team mates all around him, Michael Owen is only gonna shine at Man Utd.

WOOOOO! Still can't believe Owen is ours. My God. What a dream come true!

I'm actually surprised Rafa didn't snap him up considering all the Pool fans had wanted him back.

well...ronaldo did do the number 7 proud but the way he behave towards the end of his utd run kind of left the no.7 tainted.

rooney looks like a no 8,9 or 10.7 doesn't suit him.

hope valencia lives up to the number 7.

ahhh..if only they had sign benzema, 7 would have suit him. ala cantona.

Kimmi: Oh so it's confirmed that Valencia will be the new number 7 at United?

Yea well, if that's true, he has some seriously big shoes to fill. And i hope he fills them well.

Wonder who else Fergie is going to sign. I mean, we still have sooo much money left to go footballer shopping.

I think we need another winger though. And perhaps a 2nd choice keeper. Still not assured of Foster la.

Or maybe he will wait till next Jan when the transfer window is re-opened?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this season's transfers so far... Seemed very unlikely that Fergie would sign someone like Owen, known to be injury-prone and all. But I'm sure Fergie knows something we don't. That's why he's the United manager and not us! :p

Valencia too... I'm not sure what Fergie sees in him. I'm worried he becomes like Nani. And his performances in the later part of the season that just ended doesn't really justify the amount paid.

I just feel that the replacements for Tevez and Ronaldo aren't adequate enough. But then again, the transfer window isn't closed. But from the looks of it, I don't think United will sign anymore players.

Thoughts?

Mockingbird: Yea, i know what U mean. I'm not assured of Valencia yet. But in a way, having just signed Owen might be good for Valencia cos now the pressure won't all fall on him. I would think all eyes would be on Owen. I too, amm not sure if he's worth paying 16mil for.

Yep, transfer window isn't closed yet so perhaps Fergie may still sign 1 or 2 more players. But then again, i have a feeling he's done his fair bit of shopping for now & will want to sort out his current team first. And when the transfer window re-opens, perhaps there will be more players that Fergie wants that will be more accessible to him & Man Utd.

It's funny cos in an interview that was on manutd.com, Owen says he doesn't think he is injury-prone at all.

damn.. douglas costa is GREAT!!

watch it and u'll realise he's very very very fast, very skilled. he's more hardworking than ronaldo, he can dribble very well. doubt he can head like ronaldo though. ronaldo probably was the best heading winger we will ever see.. douglas costa seems like a free kick specialist too! something we will need since losing ronaldo.

and one last thing. he's left footed.

Wow..douglas costa looks good.=)

Seems like Own is a gamble isnt it?

but he definately is a deadly finisher.=)

That Ortegun guy good meh? that U21 French player..

Dudelove - Ooh yeah! Costa is good! I'm very impressed. Are we attempting to sign him on??

costa has a buy out clause of 20millon pounds. considering we got ronaldo at 13m 6years ago.. plus plus all the inflation and all, 20m is pretty decent. furthermore, we saved quite alot by signing owen for free
