give up normal music

I've been exposed to alot of music as a kid.

my mum likes japanese/hokkien oldies
my brother used to blast music on the stereo. Lots of sublime, operation ivy, incubus and alot of other stuff.
my ah beng/lian cousins listen to alot of techno.

my metal journey started with bands like slipknot, linkin park and limp bizkit. then I slowly started to listen to other heavier shit.

alot of music all friends intro one :)

I LOVE MUSIC!

if you really love music,

there should be not any preference for any category but rather what is good,

some pop songs are good stuff, some metal are crap, you see what I mean...

I listen to everything from classical to metal to blues to jazz, even chinese oldies.....it it not so much of the category whether it is good or not but rather the arrangement of the song, the song itself, the people doing it etc...

I would totally agree with lester_music's point of view. On top of that I would also want to emphasize that even your favourite artists/bands would listen to music of a different which you might dislike, but you'll never know man, maybe that's where they got their inspirations from.

To say a certain genre of music to suck or not is highly subjective, then another question would be how much do you know of that genre to be able to say it sucks? Of course there are alot of "blacksheeps" out there that created misleading impression of a genre.

And to really be able to enjoy and understand music, we need to break out of our "safety barrier" and broaden up our horizon to listen to all types of music without prejudice. It's kinda hard to accept it at first, but its gonna be good once you get it.

oh and another interesting things that happened to me was that, I started off listening to the "normal" music when I was younger, then gradually I went on to listen to the classic album of harder music like rock, rap and such, and at times goes by I got interested in classical music which leads to the discovery of experimental music in the vein of John Cage and John Zorn etc. and some Sun Ra concept stuffs. And Now, I went back to listen to the normal stuffs that I listened to many years ago, I managed to hear beautiful things which I never really noticed before.

Im trying to say like the Pop stars, Those that in the industry sing just to earn money, fame, fortune.

Singers after the millenium.

That might be true but it would be a stereotype based on everything that we're singing now. Some of them are really talented. For example, I would pay to see Justin Timberlake sing now because he's really talented and because there's a chance I might see Greg Howe play. We should actually thank these pop stars one way or the other, cause through them we get to see great musicians perform with them. For example, avril lavigns (pardon the mistake) guitarist is a fantastic shredder too! The same goes to the house band of the show rockstar INXS I think, Rafeal smtg smtg, he's damn pro too and well respected too!

My point is that this can be looked upon as a great platform to strut your stuff too.
Okay after reading through my stuff, this looks more like how you can market yourself out as a guitarist/musician lol. but all the same, it's tough if you want to make a living out of music, and usually playing for these pop stars can help you maintain your livelihood so we should never diss them in any way too :D and some of the pop stars are seriously very talented.

just an opinion! no offense intended :D

You're so hardcore, only hardcore people like you listen to metal, which is the only form of real music!

People who keep saying rap and pop are all 'not considered music' then I think you re quite mistaken. If it wasn't music in the first place, they would not be famous, they wont be able to generate revenue, PEOPLE WONT LIKE THEM.

If you can say that there is not ONE song of a different genre that isnt metal or punk rock or whatever it is that you swear to listen ONLY to, then IMO your more of a tonedeaf wanker than a music lover.

Your probably forcing ur musical tastes and influence here, not proving that anything popular and mainstream is non-music. I personally used to love death metal. I dont love it collectively now but there are a handful of songs that I think is pure genius. Just as how I dont consider myself a hiphop fan but undeniably I really love another handful of hiphop songs.

Music is more than just an electric guitar, bass and drums.

Bro if they really have to talent for that, who are we to question their goals? They know they are musically inclined, and they also wish to get rich. I dont see what is so bad about that, provided the music makes musical sense.

I've met quite some few narrow-minded people doing genre bashing...its kinda hard to change their point of view man, but at the end of the day, it would still be to each of his own.

i started with fall out boy and punk rock like sum 41, until it slowly progressed to children of bodom and i guess the rest is history.

actually mainstream music is not bad, just not for my liking.
maybe there is a reason why they are called mainstream - to appeal to the masses!

If you don't listen to rap, you will not say rap is music. Which makes sense. Just like if you don't listen to music, you will not say music is music.

For the record: I listen to rap, rock, electronica, classical, whatever that fancies me. But the first two genres the most.

Do note that you're also forcing your opinions onto others here. Diff ppl diff opinions on whether it's considered music to them. No matter how hard you try knock sense into me or them it's still pointless cos afterall it's an opinion.

yea don't bother trying to talk to metalheads about our somewhat militant view on what is trash. I don't listen to anything other than metal or classical.
