Combined SOFT Jam No. 2

Thanks man.

Great playing on your side too and great effort from everyone else. Its a good thing the backing track is short, so its easier to go through everyone's work and listen to their take on it.

Ed! U sux-or!!!!!

okay seriously...
You sound tired in this... hehe... work lah hor?

I like the way your double stops sound, the interaction of the 2 notes under your distortion is very toneful to me ear.

The lick @ 0:16 - WOW. That's a magical one... sounds extremely violin-like and just fits it right on!

1:05 - i like the mini-hammer-on-s. Very cheeky.

1:07 - excellent lick!

But like u said lah... ur just tired... do another take leh...

For some reason... I get Spock's Beard when listening to the way you play before the "chorus".

Spock's Beard is a progression rock/pop band and they have a ridiculous keyboardist - not so much like the widdly-widdle-di-do type but he plays very sweet, memorable melodies, and lovely chord-based solos. Worth checking out.

I really enjoyed the 1st part.. that was great. :D Its laid back and not heavy on the mind - my mind doesn't go nuts trying to figure out what's this and what's that - its pleasant listening!

I like the way you handled the chorus - especially the later half of each riff, the way you approached your improvisation rhythmically and the quirk-ish notes.

The only thing I might just... "complain" about is that it goes down too easily? while the backing is quite forceful and driving, your playing is laid back-ish (except for ending where u ramp it up a little) so... its quite a mix & match but the overall drive & (pretty) high vibe is dampened a little methinks.
What do you think?

Goose! Hehhe... axis_70? Who that?

I enjoyed the 2nd take more. The vibe is more robust and confident. Take 1 sounds more skeptical and unconvinced...and quite meandering?

So take the better take which is take 2 lah.

Anyway, here goes...
Take 1 @ 1:09 - 1:11 : Nice lick. I think this lick would represent what your friend could improve upon.

Start of Take 2 to 1:39 : I like the feel here! You get an idea what axis_70 is trying to speak - you can feel it more prominently here.

The takes were improvised so my comments will be in the vein of improvising lah... not going to talk about melody or what...
Majority of his soloing is based on the blues pentatonic - which is fine, its fine... - but he gotta develop some thing to make it more interesting. Things like playing in a different rhythm (he played most of take 1 in a stop-go-stop-go manner) or playing different notes here and there or just choosing the right notes and giving it his all when hitting those notes (which is more like take 2).

I like the Take 1 lick I mentioned because it like a punch out of nowhere... it stood out from the rest of Take 1. Note choice? Yeap... and it was a short detour from the stop-go-stop-go playing which makes it more endearing.
Take 2's lick is also noteworthy because I feel him! More confident and just wailing more here.

Eh, got flanger in it leh!

0:34 - YEAHHHH... do I hear richie kotzen here? Excellent player to steal licks from!

Its so good to hear this kind of playing... kinda of rare don't you guys think?

KILLER STUFF.

The short "critique" says it all! :D

EDIT: This just came to mind - would such fusion playing be considered "harder" to establish an identity? By virtue of the way its played - usually fast, with a pseudo/semi/totally atonal-ish approach to improvisation?

Big kotzen fan. So i most probably might have ripped something off from him.

Your question was a lil hard to understand. But if your asking if it was hard to forge an identity with fusion playing cause of the sound and speed and like you said pseudo/semi/totally atonal-ish approach to improvisation.

There are alot of fusion players with their own sound and with one listen you will know its them. John Scofield (more jazz), greg howe, frank gambale, kotzen, allan holdsworth, guthrie govan, etc. Those are some famous names.

Its harder for people who are not used to the sound or into that kinda music to really get the more hardcore stuff straight away, so it might end up sounding the same. But i am sure with the vast choices of options and notes are your disposal, you have the firepower to make it sound like you.

Just look at someone like Joel Hoekstra ( experimental fusion rock) and someone like allen hinds ( A much more melodic allan holdsworth). Not that holdsworth isn't melodic, but allen hinds playing is something even people who don't like that music can get into.

good one brandon!! ur playing has definately improved thru out the years, more flow. and ur choice of notes is getting better. keep it up.

Shredcow

hehe =) ... thanks loads for ur comments! I'm sure to check out spock's beard ... and most definitely their keyboardist ... which is JAPANESE!!! gosh ... am I just listening to too much japanese keyboardist and composer or wad? ..... am wondering .... lolx .... but i like .... hahaha =)

about the laid back thingy ...... i must agree actually .... the take is done at 12.30am and was quite tired .. and due to the mono sound when i do the take... i can't really adjust and hear the backing track properly or loud enough to get me hype? ... hahaha i dunno .... but yea .... =) ..... or maybe it just me? always not daring enough if i record my improvisation *the terror of playback!! ack!! 8O * hahahah .......[/quote]
