Boutique Gear: When did you fall for them?

i dont know, i tried a ts7 infront of my gt2 with the gain lowered and it sound much better then the gt2 by itself. like how some put a tubescreamer infront of thier gain channel with lesser gain.

The last time I checked out with Misse he had all the pedals at his place and was kind enough to let me try them all out.

I tried the RC, AC and the BB. In fact these pedals sound surprisingly GREAT together. However they're not going to give you like a metal type distortion sort of gig going. It's more of a sweet sort of overdrive/distortion kind of thing. Think of a tube amp on the tone of a natural breakup. Without of course physically breaking up.

If you want to look for examples in records, I suggest listening to some hard blues or fushion. Nice smooth distortion with very little harshness.

Funny as it seems, RC stands for Really Clean and AC stands for Almost Clean. Yes it's true. The AC to me is more of a distortion pedal, the RC is a clean boost, and the BB is like a distortion pedal with the added cleanliness of the RC.

I love them all.

With the RC gain crank you only get a light overdrive, the AC is more of an overdrive pedal than a distortion really smooth too but not very bright. Haven played the BB yet but it had more gain available than the AC, not crunchy metal type distortion their pedals all seem to be quite smooth.

I though RC stood for Rig Conductor? Some ppl on the gear page were talking that the AC booster works wonders with the Vox AC30.... heh i wonder....

Gas has struck me.... i placed an order for the MI Audio Crunch Box. Will be here next friday ehehehehehe....

Speaking of delay pedals... I got my Boss DD3 with hi cut mod back from Randolf earlier... yeah, this ain't boutique but its a neat thingy. The hi cut mod does exactly what I want it to, darken and kill the repeats so you don't mud up your tone, and it sounds very analog-ish. I opted for a 3-way toggle to handle the hi cut, so i got normal operation, hi cut, a lot of hi cut... Using a lot of hi cut, maxing the delay time (DD3 = 800ms) and repeats, I get a very nice reverbish/echoish effect.

Something cheap but great sounding, if you don't use long delays.

I was surfing ard during lunch and read abt the Catalina SuperChilliPicoso anybody used one of these? Might try it out. If its what they make it to be thn im gonna get ti to leave it as the tone enchancer heh and use teh RC as a boost and OD3 off my board of course that could just be my Gas talking.........

ahh a few delays come to mind. Boss DD20, Line6 echopark, DL4. if you want lots of delay stuff. theres always the Boss DD-3,4,5,6,7,8s..... i dunno how many it goes to. the Ibanez DE7 sounded not bad when i tried it but the tone-lok knobs were stoopid as hell, the pedals are ugly too... my opinion only.

One thing about the DE7, you can't control the amount of reverb in th echo... i frequently get a muddy delay tone... which is BAD in a live setting... hard to control.. you usually end up lowering the level of the echo too much.

I've always wanted a DL4. Seems like a great way to have multiple delay sounds on your pedalboard and the sound is pretty impressive too. But if real estate on my pedalboard is of no concern i'd put a Fulltone TTE and T-rex Replica on it

btw, about booster pedals.. i've been using a protone mach 2 booster.. its a very quiet pedal, and the gain and level control interact with each other.. its a very good pedal for cuttig thru when u need that extra boost during a solo.. even used by itself, i cna get a tubescreamer sorta sound outta it by cranking the gain up a bit along with the level..

No offense, but Music Toyz takes too long or never to my email.

My first brush with them is the Keeley Compressor when Justin (my guit instructor) used it on a Cube 30. Simply amazing.

So far I've bought quite a few. Fulltone OCD which I sold later, PedalworX Dirty Angel fuzz/dist, Budda Wah, Keeley Ibanez AD-9. Recently obtained MI Audio Crunchbox which IMO is fantastic.

hey man, can you tell me more about the Pedalworx dirty angel? seems not too expensive to buy and try, but i'm wondering if it has as much gain as it claims to. btw, is it more like a overdrive or distortion? cos i'm looking for something that might be heavier/better than my J&H

while surfing the Tonefactor site, i was also considering the Protone Spitfire and the MI Audio Tubezone. any comments?

catalin bread super chilli picoso is a zvex superhardon-ish booster with more features. good booster pedal. ultra clean and it makes the guitar sounds very "hifi" for lack of a better word.

yup it's out of stock, shredcow

the description sounds real good... which is why i am seriously considering it. who knows, might be my first boutique pedal :D

here's an excerpt:

A signal path which emulates the signal path in a tube amp.

Multiple gain stages designed to react like a good tube amp.

Sound remains tight and focused

The ability to operate both

Powerful and flexible tone control to cover most styles of music from blues to metal and anything in between.

High output levels for overdriving the front end of an amp.

thanks for the tip, i will check out thegearpage.com

oh man, and they demo-ed it with an Ibanez RG which brings it closer to home eh? :)

Yeah, MI Audio has GREAT stuff at surprising prices. Did you check the Crunch Box? Amazing.

Yes i've been using it for a while. It is very very clean when you turn it on. It adds not just more volume but a tonal boost in the higher and lower registers as well. I read a review where it says, when you turn it on, it's like lifting a blanket off your tone, which is really apt for me. That is exactly how i would describe it. I leave it on most of time when playing clean.

I also use it as a volume boost for lead passages. It's great, super loud, will cut through the band surely.

heh, havent listened to the soundclips yet. cos i'm at the office.

but the Crunch Box is not so much a distortion pedal as the Tubezone right? anyway i will chk out all the soundclips when i get home.

yeah, great to hear it used on a guitar that i have, gives a much better idea of what to expect :)

Hmmm... the crunch box... well, sounds more British to me. A very solid marshallish distortion/od it is... but I don't like the mid boost.. :)
