boutique pedals are definitely the way to go if you're really picky when it comes to tone. personally, i'm very obsessive with my tone, which is what lead to me first looking at boutique pedals
i use the z.vex super duper 2-in-1, which is probably the best boost pedal i've ever heard (even more so than the keeley katana boost). it's basically two boost pedals in one with a master volume control on one of them and it makes whatever i plug into it sound REALLY REALLY expensive. (okay, i admit that z.vex isn't exactly boutique but they're some of the most high-quality pedals i've ever seen)
dave fox is the guy behind foxrox, which is kind of like an analogman-style boutique pedal company. my friend got the foxrox zim for christmas and sold it to me because he actually wanted the fuzz (which is fantastic). the zim is basically two od pedals in one, and it's got this really cool feature where all the circuitry for each pedal is contained in a little chip which can be switched. right now, i have a clean boost running on one channel and a really awesome sounding ts9-style od on the other. combined with the z.vex boost, the zim gives out better sounds than most of the really expensive amps i've tried (although boutique amps are another thing entirely).
check out z.vex stuff at www.zvex.com and foxrox at www.foxroxelectronics.com.
..okay now that i'm done plugging my own gear i can go back to gassing and waiting for the z.vex fuzz to come in the mail.
