Boutique Gear: When did you fall for them?

aiyah.... i just have to get this out.

Its always the design of the effect that makes THE difference.

Like tubes. Tubes = tone? Crap tube design = Tone?

Solid state discrete transistors = Tone? Silicon Fuzz Face = Tone?

Opamps = Boxy? Those kabajillionmajillion hifi equipment using opamps = Boxy?

Its all in the design. Don't put all the blame on the components.

Durian with fried rice is not nice.
BUT
Durian in a creampuff pasty is heavenly.

maybe one day during the next TAGS or something, goose, edder, blueark, randolf should conduct a layman workshop for basics of building a pedal...

Then people like us can understand more about the pedals we so often rave bout...

Hahah

Really la, someone should do it, and then end the day with some drinking session to forget all about whats been taught and learnt at the end of the day. :D

Then whats a dirt pedal, op amp based, thats not boxy?

I'm curious...

forget boxy non boxy. i suggest we just go beer. Archipelago Breweries anyone?

anyway cow u stereo typing againz. go buy some more pedals and tell me if they boxy or not
huhruhrurhurh

Is a liquid sunshine based on op amps? Jfets are op amps?

I just want to know, since I happen to like that open kind of tone, if there are other pedals that do it, because as it stands, every other op amp pedal i've tried/heard, is boxy sounding.

Just curious and I'm willing to learn.

I need to elaborate further.

Dirt pedals.

Many methods of distorting the device.

These are some common methods.
Diodes in feedback loop eg Big Muff, TS
Diodes to ground eg Dist+, Rat
Cascading eg Blackstone
Hybrids eg Aron Nelson's Shakka Braddah III

All will have their inherent characteristics of signal clipping(in other words DIRT).

Shredcow the sound that you like is Cascading. But a BADLY designed cascading can sound like mush.

I repeat. Its the mainly the design not the components oh and leave out those MOJO germaniums lah... thats MOJOOOOO....

Its a tone i happen to like, so I'd like to explore that facet...

Any suggestions to "buy more pedals"?

Keeley not so friendly on Aron's. Mr Fuller also.

I is support the folks there, Aron, Jack Orman, Brian Wampler and of course the much loved R.G Keen (who's amp I've been freakin dying to try).

:D :D

Aiyah... when they have mouths to feed, bills to pay and a whole bunch of employees waiting for their monthly pay... its only right to be protective of their business.

Just that the way they go around doing things. Look at Zvex, he's cool and he mingles around in Aron's forum. So far I've not seen any of his stuff being posted online due to the respect people have for him. That is the way to go.

Ha hai ... Z no comments lah...needs to improve his vocab btw ff and other schemos posted ... ya ya ...my mouth is shut now!
