your family.

My parents don't support me in my music. I listen to black and death metal and my mom calls it "devil's music".

Well, she's actually hit the spot. But they don't support me. I had given them some good results for my Os and they actually promised to buy me whatever I wanted a few months back. I was so excited about the prospects of new gears and tried to work as hard as possible. But in the end, they only gave me 200 bucks and told me that they had never made such a promise.

They lied to me. It's okay if they didn't support me, but the thing is they lied to me.

don't worry man, they're just preparing you for the real world/society.. take it as a blessing in disguise.. :)

emphisrow, i feel you la. my parents do that all the time. they were supposed to get me a laptop for christmas so i could do my project work on it. in the end, said they didn;t have money.

best thing? day before new year's, they flew off to japan for a week. they did the same thing on my birthday as well. so they got enough money to go for a holiday themselves and not enough to gte me something i NEED for school work.

you get used to it. besides, i've been supporting myself all this time, so basically, my parents have no say in my life. if they try to push anything on me, i do have the choice to walk out and never turn back.

really no love lost.

They probably can't afford giving you everything. They just lied to make you succeed. You'll thank them later and will use the same trick on your children.

I was promised a Gibson...but got a copy.

My parents are quite supportive of me playing the guitar.
However, my father against the fact that I am strongly influenced by rock music, and want me to play Classical songs instead. He would be irritated whenever I play my electric guitar... my mum is kinda meh with it, she let's me play rock music, but to an extend...

It's hard for me to go jamming, 'cause they'll get angry with me when I even mention I'm going to go jamming with friends, so I have to sometimes lie to go. Even when watching gigs and stuff, they say that it's a waste of time watching, and should study and stay home instead.

Well, at least they support the fact that I like playing the guitar.

A lie is still a lie.

If parents can't even honour their promises, what message are they trying to send across to their children?

They just want me to finish my studies, and get a cert and good job.

Everything else in between, they're okay with it. As long as it's morally right and law abiding. lol... They support me in learning things too, but as to what sort of things I want to learn, it's a whole different matter.

Though my mum wasn't too hyped about me learning the electric guitar because it's a guy thing or whatever. But my parents were still the ones who got me my first guitar and that changed my life for the better.

I'm always remembering the good things of my parents, coz if I keep holding grudges against them, I'll probably age faster than them :/

Bro empihsrow, dont take it too heavily man. My dad promised me at least 5k dedicated to my drum gear and soundproofing my room for my good O level results. so i tried my personal best in hunting down the BEST drum deals and i did get a great one, spending only 1.3 K on drums and good cymbals. but the soundproofing.. well it never came. now im saving up to pay at least half.
But dont take it too heavily alright? even i dont keep all my promises sometimes and im sure no one does. :)

oh.

Let's see, my parents are QUITE flexible, they generally tend to allow me to do my own stuff, as long as I'm not doing anything stupid, like taking drugs. Still, on guitars, they are so-so with it, they do nag at me, if I don't study, but they don't discourage me. All my gears, are paid by myself ( intense saving money, part-time job ), and they just go don't waste money and stuff, which is typical of all parents.
Every parent has their own ways, so we really shouldn't compare, all in all, they just want the best for us. Which is good sometimes, also to be quite irritating, the nagging and scoldings, sometimes.

My parents also lies to me in the past but i've grown clever and told them to make a 'contract'. haha. My parents promise me to buy me a drumset if i do well for my 'O's and i made a contract and made them signed it. And i gt my drumset in de end. hehe. And the best thing is they wont threaten to smash the drumset cuz its thier money! lol! But they just complain about the noise, especially my siblings. haha

ah your lucky you got a drumset. my mum told me if she had the money, she'd get one for me. then i told her no. i'll get one myself. with my own money. so...still saving.:(

I realised that I've been following this thread for so long that I've forgotten to post my own story.

My parents have been pretty supportive of me playing the guitar. In fact, my first guitar and lessons were funded by them. Over the years, everyone in my household has grown accustomed to the assortment of guitar-related noises emanating from my room. It's pretty much become part of every day life around here.

My mom is actually pretty stoked by the fact that I'm the only one in my family to ever really go anywhere in music. We have this big ol' piano at home that's been out of commission for years because of lack of play. It was bought for my eldest sister, who gave up piano after a month of lessons, and this was followed suit by my middle sis, who gave up after two. My dad bought this synthesizer (you know, those really retro upright wooden ones) and gave up learning after two weeks.

the bulk of my gear was financed by the ministry of defence, when i was in NS. and it wasn't like i was an officer, i was only a man. i didnt blow it all on clubbing and booze and all that shit.

nowadays i am funded by savings and the cash i raise from selling my gear. buying gear with your own money is damn shiok, the gear truly feels like it belongs to you

I know that feeling, i worked many many hours at shangri-la hotel to pay for my gear...

and then i also felt the feeling of my gear truly leaving me when it all got stolen

guess you still haven gotten over it yet huh .
ha. i can imagine how it feels man . that bag of valuables vanishing.
damnnn. big mistake. huge regret.
all e best man . in buying new ones. if ur planning to. ha

hahaha.

any money i save now goes into costs for my band's EP before gear or anything else. I'm enjoying the feeling of playing bass raw straight into the amp again. Though a tuner would make life easier
