your family.

o yea visa , ur band is great. seen u guys on stage once before. dun giv up. haha. ur an indian right ? if u are . then u should have watched the movie " ghilli " . same thing here. when ur parents finally know that music is ur career , they'll understand u luh. i mean. they rather see their child happy with wad they're doing then goin crazy cuz they're being forced to do stufffs. ha.

My parents are quite okay with what I am doing. They only know I'm playing in a band. It all starts out with me wanting to play guitar so he bought me my first guitar. At least they are happy I found something to do rather than playing computer games, sitting at the void deck act gangster or doing nothing. My dad is actually quite proud I didn't quit so soon because I tend to quit something once I get bored very fast. So after that, they know I starts playing in a band and think that I'm playing like those Michael Learns To Rock kinda music which is no. What I'm really playing is post-hardcore/screamo kind which they still don't know I'm doing it. My dad actually expected me to play Jazz music those kind. They only know I'm in a band that's all. But they are still supportive though because I've got something I love to do unlike my younger brother who plays Dota everyday for hours.

Visa, it will be great if you ask your parents to watch you when you are laying on a big stage like Baybeats. For me, I don't think I'll ask my parents man... it's weird to head bang like my head will fell off infront of them. I will if my music is like Armchair Critic. ROFL :D

When i first bought my guitar (a cheap acoustic) with my own money, my parents was ok with it. But later my parents hate the fact that im playing the guitar as my exam result actually and did drop due to playing too much. My O and A level grade is very bad btw. Hehehe..

Thus they keep discouraging me from playing the guitar but not to a point of smashing my guitar, but got lots time they try to hide my guitar. So i need to lie to them, yada yada...
But now after seeing me doing quite well in my music and getting paid gigs, Noise thingy, they kinda actually proud of me, i dont why but they are. So now they actually support me in doing what i want as long as i know what the f^^K i'm doing.

Parents just want u to do well, prove to them that u are mature enough and know what u are doing. Parents want the best for u and want u to succeed, and they know u cant make money through music lah. Thus, telling u to study.

Agree with Cliffburton.

Parents just need to know that the kids know what they are doing. They are most worried that the kids won't make enough money to keep themselves alive. My father told me that when I was about 9 years old or so....

So, I study hard, stay outta trouble, be independent and feed myself. Nothing much they can do to run my life after that.

My mum was against me learning the guitar initially cause she thought it was a waste of money, maybe cause i quit learning the piano halfway when i got bored of it. But luckily my dad's nice enough to sponsor me my guitars and stuff.

Well like what cliffburton and pf wrote, parents generally just want to make sure that their kids know what they're doing and stay out of trouble.

My parents let me do almost anything i want as long as my studies are fine and i don't spend too much of their money...

Oh and independence is good but your parents are still your family. Family's more than just financial support, haha.

My parents are quite supportive I guess. I would play crappy music for them and my mum would say: "why you always play the same things one?"

The only complain, spending money on jamming. I'll have to tell my mum, "I'm going cheng cheng cheng with my friends", apparently she don't know what's jamming, then she will mention sth like wasting money. But she's cool with that.

Well I guess have to balance out studies and hobby. As long as I do well in studies and not create troubles, my parents are fine with what I'm doing.

Though I kinda pity my elder brother who has to tolerate me singing and playing off tune all the time, he never seems to complain. ahaha.

I guess I am very lucky fellow...My parents is real supportive of the things I do.

My dad used to have a rock band in the 80s and he just formed a rock band a few months ago for the sake of fun and guess what,I am the bassist while he's the lead guitarist, lol. All along he's been the one teaching me to play the bass ever since I was 16.Now I am 20.Currently my amp and bass guitar is partially sponsored by him.

As for my mum, she's even better. She follows us to the studio when we practice once a week and actually sits inside the studio and watches/listens to us.Same thing when we went for our first gig a few weeks back.

After the gig was over, she said - "You're really enjoy performing, don't you?"

headache to read your long long post without spaces! But good to read. :)
and yeah I'm indian but I don't really watch indian movies. ^^"
when have you caught my band? I never knew! =o

John:

yeah hahaha it would be pretty interesting to play metal to your family!

My parents sometimes laugh when I do some soloing... They think its some arabic tune or something. But they're happy that I spend time on music rather than playing computer games, gossiping (yes, guys do gossip) or sleeping all the time.

Was quite bad here when i was into Steve Vai. i got rid of his CD , the very next day , my mum bought "Strange Beautiful Music" by Joe Satriani for me .the next day. Umm my mum introduced X Japan , Les Paul and Mary Ford to me too. Dad played a spunky banjo and bluegrass.

my dad's relatively alright with me playing music but he thinks im wasting my time playing in my hardcore band and all. he constantly asks me to pick up blues or jazz cause it obviously earns more. tsk. oh well!

I'm supposed to keep music as a hobby. That's all there is to it, there isn't anymore. That's my mum's philosophy. My dad though, thinks it's ok to do what I want. I believe both.

My parents are quite ok with me playing music. My dad doesnt say much abt my playing music. My mum plays piano but somehow she`ll keep track of wat guitar gear I bought n would always nag at me for buying expensive stuff. In fact, I mostly listen to the stuff that my parents listened to back in the 60s-70s ;)

There was one time I came back from a gig n she asked me, "Wat song did u play? Smoke on the water ah?" Haha..she always ask me tat same question. This yr, I accompanied my mum to watch a Cliff Richard concert even though I`m not a big fan of his but the performance was great. :) In fact, I would sit down n talk to my mum abt the great musical icons of the yesteryears..:)

Lao... Jus..

I must feel fking fortunate man..
My parents are the very supportive type.. AS LONG AS i know WHAT i must do to earn it. studies etc.

Why can't we b allowed to do wad makes us happy in life.

because unfortunately it costs money to keep you alive so you can "do wad makes [you] happy in life", and right now your parents are the ones paying for it.

perhaps when you get a job and earn your own money you can do what you want. until then, continue your education so that you can earn enough in the future to do whatever makes you happy.

i won't advise you on anything either way but remember life is short. let's say you decide to get a "proper job" and ditch the music, when you're 50 and you look back you might think, "dang, i could have had so much more fun playing music". i say do whatever will make you happy
