Will

ur parents rock man. but to me, wouldnt really wanna have my parents going to my gig or jamming session. like sooo awkward.

my parents really have no reaction. they let me live my life however i wan it.
as long as i dont get into trouble, dont break the law etc. i wanted to buy guitar, no reaction. go ahead. no support, no sponsor lor. and lucky, no discouraging.

i heard parents always say study hard, find proper job, earn good money, live happy. hmm whats makes them sure that money is the most important thing?
my parents say, 'u happy, i happy for u.'

and oh visa, saw ur performance at TP. great man. i TP student oso. but no band. sucks

as for me.i bought a kapok guitar two years ago to play around with cos my friends influenced me with playing guitar.i brought home the guitar and at first my dad was like saying that music can't help you support yourself in the near future and stuff etc.

he was like thinking i would sit around under void decks till late night playing guitar making noise and getting into trouble.yes it did affect my studies at first cos i was spending time playing the guitar, jamming, catching gigs.that point of time is where he really was pissed with me and started bragging about the whole music thingy.

but as days pass by i began to manage time and balance between studies and playing guitar and i somehow get to improve my studies and my dad slowly give me flexibility on playing guitar not like he used to hate me everytime i play the guitar.and i just recently borrow an electric guitar from my friend cos he wants me to perform for his school prom night.my dad was pissed off cos he didn't like me borrowing other people stuffs as maybe it could be damaged or what and i'll be in trouble.

as a result i just kept the guitar and told him everything about the whole guitar thingy.he indeed now slowly changed his mind and instead believe in me that this is one of my hobby/passion that i truly desire that would kept me in the long running.and soon he's getting me my pretty own gear.by mon the lastest!at last he supports what i love most!

ps:i was actually stucked with acoustic guitar cos i cant fund for an electric guitar till 2 years counting now my dad sponsor me. =)

Mine's a funny family: Maybe because back then, I was an unhealthy kid who's prone to falling sick, etc, my parents offered me an ultimatum when I said I wanted to sign up for an outdoor camp in secondary school: Guitar or camp (that time they knew I wanted to take up guitar but actually I wanted to go to camp becos my crush signed up too ) So I guess you all know which I chose *LOL*

So, they bought me my first kapok acoustic guitar and within a year later, my first electric guitar, an Ibanez Artist (and Rage 158 amp) when I whined for it. lol. Over the years, they've never really nagged much at me spending time on my guitar and occasional jammings. My elder bro's also been really supportive to the extent that he even drives me to jamming and to my gigs :)

These days now that I'm getting old, my parents (and my granny) are starting to nag at me to get married instead and not waste time on my guitars/jamming and stuff

All in all, I'm really fortunate already, considering the fact that my dad helped me install the guitar hangers in my room to accomodate all my guitars, and even helped me with my guitar mods (with his soldering skills). He only complains about why I haven't found a girlfriend

OI!! TAK MANIS LAH! muka cam hantu

a girl going out and hanging out with guys from 8pm-8am almost everyday in the past for more than six years straight for jams, hangouts, recording, practice, song composition...
i've been called "tak manis" every time i step outside the door and even suspected for prostitution despite my family meeting my band more than once...
that's my mom..

for my dad... when the band got reviewed somewhere, dad printed them out and did a thesis / article about how i'm female and in a "dangerous, sexist scene", and got into a little debate with my uncle, who's daughter is also in an indie band, and debated the concept of letting their kids out in "dangerous situations" and what happens if they have to go tour. Honestly i don't know what runs through their heads. my cousin nearly cancelled her overseas gigs. but she went for it anyway too, if i'm not mistaken.

both parents thought it was a waste of time since i'm not making a career out of it. i didn't want them to attend our gigs cos i'm afraid they'll call ambulance if they see me headbanging or molesting mic stands. and i don't wanna damage their eardrums either (we're a metal, they're frank sinatra-bette midler etc).

but i just kept doing it anyway, and i dashed out or sneaked out if i had to, all these years. my only excuse and answer was that it was the only thing that made me happy. i even made up a female counterpart who's the scapegoat for my overnights ("we're having a slumber party!! yay!! oh look nailpolish"). that time no videocalls, so i could get away with it. now cannot lol!

i kinda forced them to get used to it cos i know it's never gonna stop so no point trying to explain the situation..

after the album came out though, they stopped bugging me..

it's funny cos my late grandfather used to work in bmg and half the family are musicians so i don't know why they cant get used to the fact that it's just running in our blood. maybe it's cos we're girls and our members are guys and they think we're gonna get raped or something,

tell them you're married to your guitars lahh..
if they want kids, go write a song :P

You know, sometimes I like to wonder how life would be if I was a teen in other countries like America or Europe.
And Africa or Israel.

My mum just don't want me to go into entertainment/media careers.
:\
Besides, I'm her only hope.
However, I'm very happy to say that next year's my Os then I'm finally 80% free.

My mum has over the years VERY VERY VERY slowly accepted and compromised some of my dreams, long term dreams/goals.
I don't know why but I can only guess.

Dam.

Some ppl here have good parents...I dunno about mine

They allow me to play bass but then my grades have to be up to standard.WHen my Mid-year grades were out, they ask me 'Wanna kiss bass goodbye?'

They don't mind me being a musician but they dislike Visual-kei bands.
When I was watching a Malice Mizer vid on youtube he commented on them'U grow up plz dun be like them, not male not female'.And Visual-kei is probably the style of music that I like most.Yet my parents think that VK is gay and stupid.I wanna go to Japan when I grow up,try getting into a VK band, see what happens.
SO when they comment on VK like that,I really do get pissed off...I love the style of music and would be happiest if I could do it in the future, yet they put it down so much...

Always bear in mind that your parents have been in the society slogging it out for a decade or more, thus knowing very well what its like to be different from the social norm, they probably experienced it themselves, its a jungle out there. ANd so they want u to conform to social norms all in the hope that you live comfortably well. All these has good intentions at heart, not jus to go against you really. Playin music as a living aint a social norm in singapore yet hence their worries

My parents are very neutral about my music, I bought all my guitars and stuff using my own money and maintain my grades when i was a student, so they have not much issues. but they do frown once in a while when i bring home another guitar, asking me "One not enough meh?", I jus grinned and walk off to my room.. As for doing music full time, get a stable job first (to fund for GAS,..haha) and do music on the sideline, if u get successful then ditch ur job.

"please be male not female"

man, parents impose on our hopes, dreams, our sexualities too!

I hope we don't do that to our kids! Try not to, k guys! Raise healthy, happy children with good self-esteem and values, but let them be who they want to be.

one day you'll realise your parents were right.

that's when you're children think you're wrong.

:D

iceland is very very encouraging on musicians.. their community basically lives by music and their culture.. i wanna migrate there...

check out the trailer for "screaming masterpiece" on youtoob and you'll get what i mean

cool , singapore jus concentrate on tourism and a lil on sports. rarely do they pay their attention to the local music scene. money's always in their mind.

hmmm... altho this thread is kinda dead... I'll just write in anyways to give my mum a sort of tribute. bear with me if its long winded or boring.

I got my 1st crap guitar from my friend... initially I wasn't sure if I could be committed in learning how to play the guitar. So i just wanted to try out abit...

But when my mum saw me play and learn, she was so excited that i was learning an instrument. She wanted to get me a better guitar but I tried to stop her cause i'm afraid i'll just lose interest and waste the money.

One day she called me and told me she bought the yamaha already and asked me to meet her outside. At first, I was quite angry, thinking why did she waste that money??!!!

But after i got there and opened the case, omg. i was overwhelmed with emotion... I was just speechless. Not because it was worth a gibson but because i realised how much she loved me and how f$$king cool she was, how fortunate i was and how wrong i was about myself. (and also because the neck was so smooth and the action was so low.. no more sore fingers YES!!!)

God, i realised that i'm very fortunate to have such a mum. My mum didn't do well in her studies last time and although she is very concerned about studies, she also believes that the overall enrichment is equally important. Musically, sports etc etc... Although our family circumstances may be shit, and we get heated up sometimes, shes damn cool. I have tons of respect and love for her.

It took me a very long while for my eyes to be opened to the fact that time is short for all of us. We should really cherish those we love. Although the stress and pressures of the world make some parents cranky and unlovable sometimes/all the time, we should look past all the negativity and focus on the love behind it all.
