your family.

wow... really sad to hear some of ur stories. sigh...

i guess the 2 main "causes" are their traditional, closed, conservative mindset and the very stressful and tight financial lifestyle in sg. really very sad to hear of such calculative & scheming parents.

i guess that's life. easier said than done.. but they are still ur parents. hope things will turn out for the better nxt time.:(

When I even mentioned the prospect of owning a drumset, I got slapped in the face. It is because of that that I'm gonna drop drumming, and take up bass as my second instrument instead.

I can't be self-sufficient just yet since I'm still studying, but every guitar thing I buy, its out of my own pocket. My future bass, it will be out of my own savings. Must make sacrifices - minimal meals, cannot buy beer, drink tap water.

But the catch is that my family just doesn't get along. Imagine the effect of four dragons living in the same house, arguing all day long. The only way for things to turn out better in my family is separation.

well i started when i was 12 now im 14 didnt had any real love from my parents
they say guitar=waste of time N $$$ well i dont think so wanted to quit guitar halfway after my dad so called accidently dropped of the stand my bc rich pro plantinium series with massive upgrades on the floor breaking it...
it was a real heartbreak i cried...
seeing my most precious gear on the floor crumbled..
then i moved on getting a crappy guitar then upgrading slowly now i got an ibanez lol
and soon making a custom guitar oh yeah where was i? "abt my parents"
well they love their type of laguage music u guys should know what i mean for late 40 year old parents..
My mum and dad supported me by give me $550 for guitar amp and pedals and then they cutdown my lunch $$ make me do part time job.
After getting all of my equipments i wanted to play my guitar now got another problem
Noise... i cant exceed volume 1 on my 15watts amp its a restriction and i didnt had any
support when i learn new songs i played to my brothers they just give me the crappy face
till 1 day i fought with my eldest brother because i set the volume to 4 and he got real mad
well who cares..
learnt alot of things in my time here in soft will recommend ppl to make friends here has most of my friends cant relate to me i like say i play guitar and they oh ok not liek
he u learning any new song or i u able to hit ur harmonics well and stuffs
well 1 thing is nvr rely on ur parents when they are not supporting u and if they are
ask them whether are they down with it... cause i asked my parents whether they were ok
it became shit.. nvm long story and what i have written is already long..

and they think rock music is crap.. cant believe in the 80s and 90s my dad had long hair..
wonder where he got that idea from

I think I'm pretty fortunate.

My mom gave me $120 to buy my first guitar after I told her about the guitar lesson I was having in sec sch. I bought a cheap-ass kapok because I felt guilty of spending her money. I returned the remaining $70 to her and she asked why didn't I buy a better-looking one.

Then over 4 years I bought an electric, then a bass, then an ovation-copy, then a classical guitar, all with my own part-time work salary. She always complained why I needed so many guitars, because she had to move them around when she's mopping, sweeping etc. I always told her "Ma, they're all different types you know". She would then just smile and shake her head. However, when I played the bass, she said that she loved the sound. "Eh keep playing bass. Don't play guitar, too noisy ah", she said that once.

My dad is more interested in my guitar effects. He would sometimes pick up my tele and doodle with the knobs and switches on my pedalboard, asking what does this box do and why does the some of the other boxes sound like crap.

He was also stoked when I made my first effect pedal, after I told him that these things could be flipped for more than $150. He even proposed to buy the components for me if capital was a problem for me.

I must say that this is interesting reading.

I am a parent with three teenage boys (my eldest is in NS) and despite my best efforts none of them are rock musicians :)

More interested in gaming... heh...

Yes, studies are important but attitude/mindset is even more important. If you are serious about being a rock musician fulltime, it's gonna be tough in Singapore so you need something to back you up.

Your parents are concerned about your welfare and thus may feel that rock music will be against your welfare. The problem with parents (and I include myself) is that we always believe that we are right and never really listen to our children.

I've reached the point with my children where - yes, I nag them about studies - but I am more concerned about their attitude/mind set towards life in general. If you are serious about music then you need to show your parents that you have a plan - you will study for the back up but you will also pursue your dreams - how is the question?

Many fulltime musicians in Singapore teach music for a living or play regularly at bars and clubs... is this what you wanna do? You may need to think hard and long about your own ability and talent and perhaps talk seriously to your parents about this issue, which I know is hard

All in my humble opinion of course...all the best with the music but remember your family is important too

sorry if i rambles too long with this :)

solid point. yea must have backup. coz if ur doin good in music for awhile, and suddenly a new artist pops up and beats u hands down. ur time will be up and no other avenues to earn money. Thats what parents are concerned about. They don't want their children to be broke. So stop complaining and just make them happy on the backup side. Then slowly, they will understand and give in

My Dad likes me playing the guitar.
He keeps pestering me to play him songs but i don't really play the stuff he listens to.
nevertheless, he thinks me guitaring is a good idea.
most of the time he's like
"vicki go study. if you want to take a break don't on comp. go play guitar"
but yeah i guess i gotta thank him for letting me have the opportunity to play guitar cos i spend 1000++ on piano a few years ago and after 1 year i still couldn't even sight read.
i had to count notes from the bottom.
my dad paid for my ibanez sa120, and my roland cube 20x.

he thinks a black lespaul with gold hardware is cool so when i can finally be pro he's gonna buy me one. and also a custom made PRS :P

he likes my teacher alot too.
he's always asking about him and telling me to practice more so i can be as good as him cos my teacher's really passionate about what he does.

my step mom paid for half my guitar.
bribery but heh it worked :P

my mom lives in shanghai and she wants me to play november rain for her when i go over at the end of the year.

my step dad is willing to buy me an amp there just so i can practice in shanghai too.

yeah my family's pretty supportive (:

i learn alot from these thread. thanks to visa.
anyway , ive said about my family earlier .but right now .
im learning to be independant and using my own cash for my gears.
i jus feel guilty when i ask my parents for cash to get this or that.
i have to tell em that my ibanez rg370 was 200 bucks when i bought it for 500.
if i tell em 500 i'll get screwed. but anyhow , they dont mind me playing the guitar .
thats all . my parents are indians who're into tamil songs and stuffs.
so they dont know about guitars or the music scene.
so im kinda a lone soul at home playing rock and metal by myself without anyone appreciating it. but as long as they give me the space and jus let me do what i want. im happy.

=visa

Maybe you have to talk it out with them that this is your hobby it will not affect your grades and future career in anyway.

then i would be lying, because it is not just a hobby to me.

anyway, they came down for our set at the esplanade powerhouse, and they seemed sort of proud. my mum, anyway. my dad didn't say anything, which i suppose is a good thing!

My parents don't really disapprove me of playing guitar and going gigs.Whenever I told my parents that I would be out during the weekends, they would most likely reply,"Going gig is it?Is your cousin coming along with you?"Can say they like me going gigs.My parents don't really care about me doing music and stuffs but they don't like the idea of keeping long hair.
My dad recently funded me my craftsman gs90 starter pack:)
I thought that my parents would disapprove me of playing guitar and going gigs since I'm the only child, and I always thought that my dad especially would hate to hear those songs that I'm listening but surprisingly its the other way round. My dad supports me of playing guitar and going gigs.:D

visa , thats how my mom feels about music so i feel your pain haha but shes been rather patient recently . My dad has always supported it and pays for most of my equipment cause playing music isnt something that i can afford on my own as a teenager

Keep talking to your dad and communication will ultimately bring forth understanding. Music is very very important to me but will never replace my parents. I know and how much I regret that I do not communicate with my parents. I know cos I lost my dad 2 months ago. I never got to talk to my dad about my dreams. about his dreams. I never will. But you got a chance. All dads and mums love us and want the best for us but ultimately if you can prove to them that what you want is best for yourself, they will let you. Dun push your parents away from your dreams and life. You can have music your whole life but your parents will most probably will not be. Cheers.

well, my mum has been supportive so far. ;) maybe cause my dad was a musician himself? so she has that experienced mindset of having musicians in the family.
she came for my very first gig. she was trying so hard to get away from the moshpits before my set. haha. and she is a bad photographer :D

well visa, bring them along for your future gigs. sometimes it takes time for them to really understand.
all the best ;)

No one in my family (when I was growing up) was ever musical minded.

Now I have a family of my own - my wife is a piano teacher / choir mistress and both my kids can sing as well.
