I'm looking for a guitar that is a reasonable price (700 is ok I guess) which will last me for a long time. This weekend I'll probably go over to Roxy Square (and maybe Swee Lee if I have time) to try out a couple of guitars.

I SWEAR TO ALL OF U I WAS GONNA SAY ZAKK WYLDE THREE!!!

dude imo, if u wanna be safe and u like that gibson sound, epiphones do cover that ground pretty well. like the others here said, there are japanese copies which are highly compeitive but these are more pricey as well as a Edwards would cost u at least 1.1k brand new. A burny? Similar price.

Why not try the epiphone? If u like it and u like gibson why not? Its under their brand. This would be a good choice if ur brand conscious. No doubt the epiphone is a good guitar..

You shouldnt Buy an Epiphone Standard Plus for $700~

I bought 3 Epi Les Pauls before First hand
All around the $300-$450 range

Also, you really shouldnt Buy something that you think is Expandable, just Save up and Buy a proper Gibson~ or if you like an Eclipse~

Or else your just going to sell the guitar and go through the cycle again :(

Heres a Short Test

1: Do you like the Gibson Headstock?
2: Do you Mind the Epiphone Headstock?
3: Do you bother about Electronics
4: Are you weak and Afraid of the Weight?
5: What are the odds that you will sell the Epiphone or he Gibson
6: Will you bring yourself to buying a Guitar for that price?

classic case of asking 10 different guitar players and getting 20 different answers.

For a BEGINNER... an Epiphone is good enough. Play with it, grow with it and then decide whether to drop this hobby or continue before dropping another big load of CASH for another perceived better guitars. Its like asking a first time camera buyer to buy a top of the line CANON DSLR with L lens or a first time car buyer to buy a fricken Lamborghini or a first time house buyer to buy a unit right in Sentosa just because of the notion that you may wanna upgrade later. No money no honey.

Got $700? Work around this. Drop the guitar budget to $500, factor in the price of a practise amp or an amp simulator like a Line6 Toneport direct to PC/Laptop via USB and you'll have a good start. There are way too many things to play around with the Toneport to "simulate" what you may need and don't need. Its got a build in TUNER, anyone who wants to learn how to play guitar needs one.

My advise is to buy used BUT you gotta bring someone who KNOWS(not those who think they do) to check out the guitar for you. $700 is a bit too much to pay but then... these days.... what is $700? huh?

BEst thing to do is just to play air guitar. Being a guitarer is an evil hobby. It will suck out all your willpower. You WILL get withdrawal systems when not playing and you WILL end up spending too much money on other things.

So better save up money and do not become a guitarer. be a forum troll......

With a $700 budget, maybe can consider an Ibanez RG? Comes with 2 humbuckers like a LP. But with a slim neck for those who want to shred.

But do some research before you buy. Cos some RGs are better than others.

I don't get this Zakk Wylde thing. Could someone clarify? Is Zakk Wylde against Epiphones? I thought he had an epiphone signature series?

700 SGD is for a NEW LP standard +. Which (I think) is a pretty good price.

"Line6 Toneport direct to PC/Laptop via USB and you'll have a good start. "

Where can I find that and how much would it cost? I was planning on buying a second hand practice amp of the forums. It can simulate effects pedals right? Cause that would save me a lot of money. :)

Roxy Square??? What guitars are there man? Only Look For Beez and some small shop with people who are clueless of what they're doing..

Lets count the number of shredders using LPs and the number using, say, an ibanez RG.

But to say a LP is unshreddable holds no water as if even one person can do it, means that it is not unshreddable. Me just thinks those that do not uses LP's cannots tahans the weights liaos~~~

*tries to imagine Malmsteen swing a LP ard his neck*

hurr hurr hurr......

*crawls back under my coconut*

its really up to you. snce its your first guitar, dont go for a brand new one. u may just decide its not your thing in the end and drop guitar. go for a good second hand guitar and see if you like it. test the guitar before you buy. bringing a friend along to check for any problems is good, but ultimately, you're hte on playing the guitar, so play it yourself, and see if u like the feel and it feels comfortabe to you.

set aside about 100 or so for a cheap 15 watt practice amp and the other 50 or so for cables picksand other miscellaneous items.
u cna get a good second hand ei lp for about 500 or so.

think it over.

yeap, agreed, and LP's are shredable, take buckethead and doug aldrich for example.

but anyways, epi LP's are pretty decent guitar and like said, they arnt too lousy but not that good as well, or if you want something close to a epi LP's get a epi special 2 i started out on that one and it's cheaper. the feel of the special 2 and LP is rather similar just that it lacks 2 more knobs and pickup selector is in a totally different place, but other than that, the price is much cheaper too, and maybe like Razrash said, get a 15 watt prac amp and just play away =) with the 700 dollar budget, it can usually go a long way if you know how to stretch the dollar,

but that said, folks here can only give you tips on how to go about doing that, and when it's all said and done it all sums up to what you really want for a guitar and if it really is the kind of guitar for you, so don't commit just yet, waltz into swee lee or davis, look at guitars at your price range and just try em out, you might find one you like, heck you might even fall in love with the guitar from the starter pack and you'll save yourself a good 400- 500 bucks =)

heck you might even fall in love with the guitar from the starter pack and you'll save yourself a good 400- 500 bucks =)

Bro, I had bad experience with a starter pack.

The accessories such as guitar strap, amp, tuner, cable were all crappy.

The made in Indonesia guitar sounded very good for its price. But the electronics started crapping out within a few months. Wear-and-tear was so fast the thing was almost falling apart in less than 2 years.

To shred or not to shred? That is the question.

What's with all this shred this, shred that, and LP cannot shred and all that jazz? Unlike other music forums, the term "shred" is so overused in SOFT. Don't know why. So what's the big deal with....er....what you call....shredding? You play the guitar, you don't shred the guitar. Save shredding for papers and documents. I recommend Xerox. Ok, I've said my peace. Bye. ;)

Think Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Incubus, etc...

with the exception of guns and roses the guitarists from these band uses single coiled guitar like the strats.
If you like their sound, les paul is the wrong way to go. You should start with a strat.
