What do you mean by 'sellouts'?

in my view . Sell out is just someone who has found a more marketable approach to their music. its nothing bad . its just a prefrence in the before /after music. However it is being used in the underground sceane alot...all around the world. come on deep down everyone wants to be on mtv. we all want to market ourselves rite... one may market themselves however they pls . but just stay honest and true to the music we write..

" before a7x was known to the world, your want us like hell
now a7x is known to the world, you people call us SELLOUT"

they are only sellouts when they change their musical direction in order to capture the mass market. these people are not about making music, they are about getting more fans to make money out of them, and to please their record label.

for example, linkin park's latest BALLAD single. what a joke

sellout:

1) Hip and trendy word of true elite kvlt fans for bands they "used" to like, but not now
2) Ability to think outta angsty world and embracing changes
3) Progression
4) appearing on mtv and yo yo yo with beautiful people
5) music not as hard like erection like metal
6) when more girls into them
7) when their cd ads start appearing on singapore nationale tv, CH 5
8 ) when radio start playing their songs
9) when their songs start to appear on chart
10) when theres people discussing bout sellout on internet forum

sellout is the term used when unsuccesful artistes gets jealous over artistes who enjoy commercial success. enough said, these are the people who only know how to whine, and NATO (no action no talk). ahaha.. music is subjective, and if somehow many people like it, u should ask urself why and the fact remains that, many people enjoy listening to it. So even in my opinion i think hip hop is crap, there are billions of people out there who like it and i respect that. At the end of the day, just enjoy your own music because nothing else matters.

new kids on the block soldout
milli vanilli soldout
vanilla ice soldout
mc hammer soldout

there's no integrity anymore. oh the humanity!

Look at a definition:

Selling out refers to the compromising of one's integrity, morality and principles in exchange for money, 'success' or other personal gain. It is commonly associated with attempts to increase mass appeal or acceptability to mainstream society. A person who does this, as opposed to following the original path s/he laid (or claimed to lay) out for him/herself, is labeled a sellout and regarded with disgust and immediate loss of respect. Selling out is seen as gaining success at the cost of credibility. Every person, from the entertainment industry, to political revolutionaries, to a Bohemian who suddenly switches to a socially conservative lifestyle, could be a sellout.

If I am asked to play cheesy/corny simple commercial music for big bucks, I will do it and join the legions of Kenny G and Richard Clayderman....Now that is what most people would call 'selling out' but I don't give a damn :P

Changing to suit the taste of others vs staying true to ourselves.

This is different from changing music styles..

Take progressive for example. Their musical styles changes over the years, but that's for themselves, not for getting more fans.

To me there is nothing wrong with being 'sellout'. If u are happy becoming 'sellout' and getting lots and lots of money for it.. There is nothng to lose.. Yah people can get jealous and call u names, so what? Hehehhehe...

$$$$$ makes the world goes around..

an example of selling out, for me, is for example claiming to be punk and anti-authoritarian, then playing a government sponsored show because it pays $$.

nothing wrong with earning money doing what you love. Bands like Paramore are selling like hotcakes without compromising their artistic integrity.

The grey area is when your direction changes, and you start out "punk" (using the term loosely here) but as you mature you develop and become "milder" and more radio-friendly. I think Funeral For A Friend grew very nicely from their heavier to their more radio-friendly songs without compromising much.

thoughts?
