What do you mean by 'sellouts'?

haha optisailor,

well, i'm thinking more that sometimes a band's music does change organically and not always under the influence of their record labels, so do we really call them sellouts? i dunno man, its a crazy world in the music industry.

many people pride themselves on sense of elitisism they feel when they like a type of music..its less prevelant in other genres but more in terms of classical music and metal. the thing bout both this classifications is that they allow one to discuss technicalities that they enjoy so much about the music that other individuals cannot share. but once this sphere is destroyed, and you have alot of idiots "pretending" to know that music and tryin to intrude on a almost sacred part of your personality; one is bound to get pissed off and the term sell out is used.

i'm all for being widespread and having a radio audience, but as a devoted fan it also angers me when there is an influx of such individuals.

i mean try to telling a classical music appreciator that you listen beethoven..

why isnt there metal on singapore radio anyway?

vheissu: if the band changes organically, that is a different case. what i mean by sellout means that the band admits changing musical direction to suit mainstream taste so that they can earn more money, or under the influence of record labels or their producer or something. for example, like if a7x changed by themselves without the intention of catching a larger market share, people might not have labelled them sellouts, perhaps overrated. however, their whole attitude has already proven them to be sellouts from their previous genre.

For a band, if their aim is to win an award in the mainstream scene, then their heading to the 'sell-out' zone. A7X won it. Some stupid MTV awards. Awards doesn't make you a better band when there are better ones out there... It's just for show. I've heard a thousand bands that are better than A7X, Fall Out Boy, MCR and they are unheard of. Which is good. Keep it that way.

Money makes the world go round man. take the best musicians in singapore for example. They are actually sessioning for pop artistes like sun yan zi, ah mei and etc.

I think in malay - cari makan if i'm not wrong. who gives a damn if you can play music you are passionate about when only a small portion of people want to hear it. Making money is the most important thing in the world. The rest, are just hobbies.

Just my 2 cents.

true true true, hahaha. well... lets just forget those that we have come to dislike and just indulge in those that haven't sold out :)

to mad hatter,

sorry man, if one upholds your view than doing music can be equated to doing menial labour, in the sense "its just for the money". when einstein came up with relativity only a handful of people did consider him a genius till later on, when the beetles started out, recording labels actually rejected because it was speculated that the masses "guitar playing is on its way out". Live life for others without having considered your actions of why you do it makes one no better dan an animal.

not as distinguished as you my friend, but i hope my opinions make some sense; i do however get where your coming from.

and fuzztremecho thanks for the RIA info
