What do you mean by 'sellouts'?

who cares...singapore who to sell out to?

I sold my old cassettes to the newspaper man... cos he liked it and you know you won't earn any more than $3.50 for it.

Sold it downstairs at my HDB flat.

That's selling. out.

The other term's easy to see; firstly, decide whether the musician is playing music for passion or more $/popularity/that porche etc.

If they're playing for passion, but realise that the scene they're playing in won't get you far with $/popularity/affording that mercedes benz, they abandon their scene and play in the mainstream and hope to god the hiphopppers and This Fashion aunties love it.

That's selling out too.

Sadly, like AzNjT said, some people aren't originally sellouts until they get tempted by the superficial things, influences and ideas of some cheeky "entrepeneuristic" people, or are in debt from recording their last self-produced underground CD that didn't sell so well, so no choice but to sellout to get more moolah and kachings and save their musicial butts.

I know some old peeps who, after taking a few decades break, come back to play their old hits in the mainstream. Do not mistake them to be sellouts, they're just bored and want to top up their retirement fund.

You guys should know that I'm posting at 7+ in the morning without having my first sip of coffee.

i think all bands that appear on mtv are sellout, simple?

that isnt entirely true. some bands when they started out they are already on mtv, so its their original style and they cannot be considered sell outs. sell outs are like so many have already mentioned: bands change their original style of music from something that they play with passion into a style of music that they know will attract the masses and earn them big bucks.

case in point: A7X. they once mentioned in a metal hammer or kerrang! interview that they wanted to change their style of music so that they can capture more market via mtv and stuff like that.

metallica's change though most would deem it as sell outs, they might not have been given a choice when they changed their style from thrash metal to heavy metal then to hard rock-ish sounds. there are lotsa other factors that could have been at play also. perhaps its cos of bob rock's style of producing the band (note that bob rock produced bands that were more pop metal as well, so it could have affected how he decided to produce metallica). perhaps its cos they couldnt get over the death of cliff burton and stuff like that.

so like i said, bands selling out isnt always up to them to decide.

then again, some bands have never sold out. they never had anything to sell to begin with xD

hey, i agree, being obscure doesn't mean you're good :)

So what happens when an artiste first does the mainstream stuff to gain a foothold in the industry, stuff that he does well but is not exactly what he wants to go after,

then,

moving on to stuff that he really loves and wants to play, explore, experiment, express, and further?

John Mayer anyone? ;)

frankly, if u think an artist has sold out, then don't listen to him/her/them anymore. less people buy their stuff, they make less money, they realise it, then they will un-sellout. however, as long as they make money, they don't care about the people who call them sellouts.

im dreaming of being a rock star

play at reading festival to 80 000 people

of course im gonna start of as a small band, small gigs

IF im good, people will support me. and as i progress, and as a musician, my music will slowly change

and one day im on MTV and everything and i play reading festival. people will call me a sellout cause im so popular. people who once supported me as a small band feel that its not fun/cool now that everyone know 'my band'. people who once supported me when i was a small band will hate me and wish they were never a supporter.

kinda sad eh :(

you guys get the drift :D

that is what u call unpassionate musicians. play for money and fame.
hell yeah they get more money and fans.

passionate musicians believe in their music all the way. they are not influenced by other people halfway, money, etc. RESPECT goes to them

remembered something from School of Rock, or maybe wrong, forgot.
'there used to be something called the MUSIC. but oh no, the man ruined that too with something called MTV!!!'

Sellout?
Overrated i would say. Popular but not like by many others.

Avenged Sevenfold
My Chemical Romance
Children of Bodom
Trivium
And various emo and core bands....

u know what bockscar said earlier was quite true. if a band gets too popular and everyone listens to them, its played on radio like almost 10 times a day. We will start to isolate that band, thinking that they are sellouts. The way people write music does change, like over 5 years?

i do no think children of bodom have sold out, seriously, they have still got it in them, just that they write more refined stuff now, making them more "available" so as to speak.

true enough. Maybe not yet, but in other countries. Well, 2008 is the year they became a sold-out band. Knowing that their gonna come out an album this year, it just makes them more unpopular. Their music is getting 'core-ish' these days...

vheissu: i think in your previous post you were referring to overrated bands, not bands that have sold out. overrated bands are different from sellouts, cos as mentioned before, sell outs are bands that change their styles to suit the general musical taste. so while hardcore fans of a band's previous style may not like what they have evolved to become, they might gain more ground by earning more fans who like their new musical style.

overrated bands can be MTV bands, meaning that they have been on MTV all along, ever since they formed, while sellouts may be bands that once adhered to a certain style but have changed to become more mainstream and then getting onto MTV.
