hi , may i know what pickups are you guys using on your teles? and what kinda tone are they giving you?...

im shopping around for a nice set of tele pickups .. something that can do rock and still gimmie that tele twang...

Dang I thought this was a show your Tele thread

Ok err,

SD QP's. Very Fat sounding stuff. Loses that twang really.

I'd suggest get a Hot for Tele and have it ordered with the Tapped option. Tap it for twang and then put it back to full when u wanna rock. Of course via a mini switch or push pull.

This can be done with a QP, but the standard poles on the "Hot" will work better for the tapped, vintage output setting.

i tihnk i'll try out the Quarter pounder... reading its description .. i think its alright for my needs...

what about neck pickups? any one has any reccomendations? Joe bonamassa uses an alnico pro 2 i think... and it sounds awesome..

it all depends on what you goin for Min .... BL's are rockin !!
He has nailed it right as i am yet to find a pu that performs close to BL's !!

Second ...try P90's !!

Chanmin, I have no experience with Teles, well, actually only one.. didn't like it...

BUT!

I like Richie Kotzen's tone. He has a signature tele with dimarzio pups. Lots of clips on youtube, and he plays plugged directly into the amp.

i love richie kotzen's tone! it's not only the tele, it's the amp i think. very great tone. and the tele doesnt have the twang now :(

chopper T and twang king.

Thats true... no twang... He played some improvisation, clean, on youtube... no twang.

But Chanmin, you would know this lah, you gotta compromise something for something else.

Apparently, these folks seemed to 'nail' Roy Buchanan's Nancy tele sound with their pickups: http://www.buckcannon.com/

Of course, you'll have to turn up all your amp knobs to 10 and plug it in clean to truely do a Roy Buchanan

Hmm.

I have a Fender MIM Muddy Waters Tele. I had to change the neck pickup to a Dimarzio Twang King due to the stock pickup having a broken ground wire (or smth like that).

However I must say that on clean it gives you that same sound, with slightly better clarity and when I turn on the overdrive it becomes blues heaven!

oh! you mean the twang king does the tele thing well? hmmm maybe have to rethink dimarzios...

ok guys... thanks for all the inputs!
will post pics of my diy custom tele makeover...

Hmm.

You should definitely give the twang king a go, ChanMin. Especially if you want clear mids, highs and well-defined lows for both clean and overdrive.

Hmm.

Some people say they do not like the tele because:

"the sound too trebly"
"very difficult to play"
"shape very weird"
"isn't it only good for country?"

Their personal opinion, so I can only put my own input which is:

1. The telecaster is such an uncompromising guitar.. it really makes you sweat out the notes... when you go through a telecaster, you'll emerge as a much better player, rhythm-wise, feel-wise etc.

2. For any two-pickup guitar out there worth it's salt, I'd put the telecaster right at the top (just beside to the classic players' choice the Les Paul). Why? It's pure business when you strap it on, and people know so.

3. I have yet to come across a guitar which can cover almost every musical genre without compromising its stock parts.

i still think the strat is the most versatile guitar ever. i still love it.

how's the tele's neck feel like? does it have the C shape profile like most strat necks? is the radius very different too?

Hmm.

Of course it depends on what Tele you own. I have come across a few strats which had necks I did not like, but I did try one friend's MIM strat which had this fantastic-feeling neck.

I have to say that the radius is a typical vintage 7 & 1/2 inch radius (mine's a vintage replica instrument) which requires a higher action to prevent the strings from choking out during bends after the 15th fret.

Versatility aside... of course the strat might have an edge over the tele.. but I still daresay that both are equals when it comes to handling a variety of genres with authority.

Telecaster necks tend to be fatter. They fill the palm a little better.

Fatter as oppossed to thinner like a RG.

Agreed on the points with rubbish in rubbish out on a tele... It really forces one to clean up his/her act.

Once mastered, the incredible clarity on the telecaster will let your notes sound out with authority and cut.

Dimarzio do have a way of making pickups which have a double character.

I enjoyed my Fast Track 1 alot when it was alive. Smoothened out incredibly when it was overdriven, but sounded very strat like when clean... No idea how they do it.
