Standard of music , is it going down the drain?

Okay I've just sent him a PM. Awaiting his reply now.

Asked him whether his DGO summit will be opened to the public. If yes then perhaps some of us could attend his summit?

the DGO meeting is for organisers. i was there for the first meeting (although i am not any organiser, i was there for the drinks and food).

what we can do on SOFT is to spread the idea of improving the standard of musicianship.

Take it from here onwards and see where it will lead to for the next one year.

I might not believe in the idea of grading system, improving standard of bands thru external 3rd party via means of other methods other than the band itself continuing jamming, listening to more music, writing, recording etc, but i respect people doing things which they believe in and able to carry on for a long time.

Good luck and sincerely, no sarcasm nor joking intended.

Just imho, as much as we can spread the idea of it(we can spread, but people dont get into mind, after many years, still cant make it) will it be a good idea if at the same time, having organizers demanding certain standard in the way they accept new bands for gigs etc? Press kit, decent recording of their songs etc..

Heh, myspace sorta site shud not be a criteria for organizers to select bands. Make the band work, press kit, demo cd, freebies..

DoubleBlade: Then shouldn't something "practical" be at least done?

It's all just words here on the net.

Amitaba... Someone sees the light. And you were the one who started the thread. You feel very strongly about this topic. visa felt very strong about certain issues and started CAVE Entertainment, albeit featuring his own band in all his shows. A true DGO! Up his points!!!

unfortunately..its already happening. alot of promoters/venues in melbourne and oz have stopped bothering with accepting demos and presskits and are instead asking for myspace URLs..

when was the last time you actually bothered visiting the actual website of an unsigned band? sad but true..myspace has taken over

EDIT: my 666th post. BROOTALE METALE.

heh, yes, brounsanebro, i know how widespread the idea of internet and myspace has change the way bands project themself out to the masses. It was more of a tongue in cheek thing when i mentioned that.

Without internet site like those, i also wont be able to put online the stuff i have done in order to spam in other forum

Well since the crux of the problem lies in doing some about the "standard of music" , creating my own gig company won't make any difference in relation to the problem.

Since I was the one who started the topic , therefore it is my responsibility to turn my words into practical.

One suggestion I have is to organise a workshop which is something similar to last year's Youth Concert @ Southeast. According to Anthony , although there were many bands were keen in attending his series of workshops , most of them played him out in the end.

Suppose if we could make the topic of discussion revolving solely around "improving a band's standard of playing" by getting SOFTie speakers to educate them on how to diversify their playing , how to coordinate each other's playing in a band or even the psychology of each individual band members personality which could ultimately lead to better chemistry between band members etc. Shredcow's talk at last year's Youth Concert @ Southeast was indeed a very insightful and interesting one. That's my suggestion thou.

as of we 'speak', i know of 3 programmes that are running or will be running which is addressing the issue.

will release more information when the time is right.

hey, i like the fact that he organizes gigs for his own band to play. it shows how much desire he has to play gigs, and he has the player's interests at heart, being a musician himself. up for him too :D

this is where the self-control or control must come in.

someone got interested in playing music
pick up an instrument
find some other members to form a band
jam for a while and want to 'perform'
no gig available, start their own
performance not up to par
audience feel bad

this is the problem i see. as a music community, we understand and give encouragement. but if we look at how this will affect our progress in local/international standing, we cannot ignore the negative effect it brings.

Bro SOFT bro, sorry to say this. That sounds like a God-complex.

Who the hell is to say what's right or wrong?

I concur with my bro RR bro. Natural selection will always weed the weak and weak-willed.

Since we started 3 years ago, there were so many DGOs and bands which came and went. If you can make it or have the perservance, you'd make it longer.

Soft,

From what you mentioned so far, I get the impression that you treat local music as a competitive entity. I feel that letting nature take its course is the only way to improve. Local music standards are not going down. It's just how we view the state of affairs here. If anything is happening, its probably more and more kids getting into the whole band/musician's dream, and of course, THEY need time to grow won't they?

If you want anything to be more competitive, it should be directly-commercial things like - Musical standards of Local cover Club/Pub bands. If we all play like Jive Talking, Kruger, Tania or Shaggies then I guess being more competitive will just equate to money, which in turn serves the ultimate purpose of these bands ($$$).

SERIOUSLY, I CANT UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU GUYS ARE TALKING ABOUT. SO CHIM. hehe...

Heres are my thoughts, sorry if not LINKED.

Music Can Be anything. Good or Bad , Not standard or Standard, It is Still MUSIC.

To all bands , new musicians , never be discourage if people says u are bad, not standard etc.

Its about the PASSION.

Its like Singapore got its own English accent/slang, its Singlish.

Same goes to Singapore Music - we have our own goals. To be standard, it takes time. For now, LETS ENJOY THE MUSIC !

AgingYouth, you and everybody will decide what's right or wrong. we just have to ask ourselves.

Natural selection will work but in a world with so much distraction, can we leave it to the 'natural'?

i use a easier to digest scenario. you run a supermarket. at the beer isle, you have 20 types of beer. 10 of them are hardly selling and you decided to run a promotion - buy 1 get 2 free. you see results, 1000 bottles sold. but the next day, 200 customers came to complain about the beer they bought.

you as the supermarket owner, would you continue to stock these beers and risk affecting your store's reputation? or would you feedback to the beer company and ask them to improve?

3notesAbar, SOFT has always promoted music making. i definitely see the increase in interest in playing music. but i feel the next step is to increase the musicianship, the quality of our musicians/bands/music.

biopromax, soon 5 years would pass. by then, maybe you would have married, bought a house and work in nice company but the music standard will still be the same as 2007 if nothing is done.

yes, music like everything else is about passion. but why wouldn't we want to excel in our passion?

i live at macpherson near the Gurkha camp. when you see them, you will know what is standard. not in terms of music but what they are best at - fitness.

If a musician thinks that its time to move on, then they will move on. Now, most bands/musicians thinks that making music is just about hobby, passion. Cause my point of view, making music in singapore don't earn much.

Now, our aim is to build that foundation and know more bout singapore music scene first. Then, when times come, we will make it International or Regional.

By then, The medias , Tvs and Radio will broadcast more local stuffs through their media.

Thus, local scene can be Seen, Heard And Touch by others.

It takes a lil bit of time. I think I will still be in touch with Music when I get married or become bussines man etc.

*That is my perpective tho, what says you?*

This thread is a really good one.

As long as there is a demand for small gigs; those that almost necessarily come with the 'bad music/musicians' there is nothing we can or should do. That's just the way it is, not only here but everywhere else in the world.

The trick/job isn't preventing wannabes from doing their thing. Rather it is to ensure that the playing field duly and righfully recognises the cream at the top.

To the dude that proposses that musicians work for free or for pittance, well I suggest that you yourself work for free, whatever it is that you do. And taxation isn't fiscal policy per se.

As long as musicians here are supported in the right way they should have every opportunity to lead economically sound lives while pursuing their craft/art.
