Standard of music , is it going down the drain?

talking abt Airplay RR dood, our own local stations wont even support the scene..there isnt a dedicated station or even regular time slot to show case anything from this island.
like i said previously..even if a local band gets some airtime..usually ppl will just change the radio channel n listen to some other station..
since technology is at our disposal these days, mayb SOFT cld read up on onli radio channels..which r getting pretty popular these days..we cld have our own local radio station.
check out www.surfmusic.de , this website has tons of radio stations worldwide n some of them r privately run..just hope this idea doesnt break too many local laws..

soft boss...

Maybe we should start a softies' radio channel like those on winamp. Ermm what are those call? ... Shoutcast izzit? We could even have our own DJ, DJ-softie or something like that.

A bit of thread hi-jacking. Whenever this softie word is mention it always give me a tissue feeling. :P

to have a soft radio that plays local music would be to open up even more opportunities for local artists... but it's a different direction from say trying to make a more competitive culture, or restricting gig opportunities.

i don't know, to me increasing exposure and awareness may not necessarily lead to an increase in the standard. do note that bigger local bands would expect royalties for airplay

Is there a soft radio? For this type of thingy, we need to check with soft boss for permission. We could come up with individual DJ for different time slot. "Yo.. yo, this is DJ-Rotten in da house..." 8)

agreed on the royalties part shinobi..

but my perception wld b at the bigger picture..how bands will strive to play gd music n play well together..though recordings scrutinize each and every note, it allows the players to sit down, play calmly n punch in over areas that they screw up, it forces them to reflect on their own playing n to a gd recording. note* bands will scrutinize themselves instead of just letting fly watever recordings they have, therefor automatic quality control!

on the other hand..recording studios will benefit as well, cause the expensive equipment is finally going to gd use, this applies to the bands too..instead of doing expensive recording just for 'myspace','open mic' or cd for sale n distribution, they cld take this opportunity of the radio to allow ppl to hear wat they have to offer.
if its gd..ppl will buy their cds anyhow, n definately more ppl will attend watever gigs the band will b performing in.

the radio station will b able to sustain itself too, cause just like SOFT, sponsors and the like will chip in just to have their events or companies or watever b mentioned on air.

what say the rest of u?

liqnitro: Whenever this softie word is mention it always give me a tissue feeling.

Sounds like a sanitary pad to me!!!

shinobi: do note that bigger local bands would expect royalties for airplay

Nah, as long as you are registered with COMPASS, you can expect royalty. No need to see if it's a "big band" or not.

Radio stations are fucken expensive to set up. Licenses, DJs, etc.

There are quite a few shows which focus on local music what. Mario of POWER98 plays them when he can. There's HOME on 98.7FM on Saturdays 2 - 3pm and LUSH 99.5FM plays Electrico remixes, Phorous, The Observatory and assorted electronic outfits at any point of the day. Where got donch have? Donch be so greedy and ask for a whole day programming.

ShredPusssy: since technology is at our disposal these days, mayb SOFT cld read up on onli radio channels..

Idea chuay chuay dan si mai cho kang si buay sai eh.

If technology is at our disposal these days, why should my bro SOFT bro do it? Why can't you DO it?

I know it's the rage of the generation to be anti-governement and all. But sometimes I have to agree with SM Goh's speech at National Day Rally of "You cannot expect a handout... You gotta work for it."

dont use hokkien la..why? run out of vocabs ah?

Lim peh mai kua tio li di cit daw kau peh kau bu la

Make a survey how many people really anti gahment?

I dont think you can expect honest answers.

let's concentrate on the standard of the music first. all the other things such as radio/tv airplay, media, coverage, money will come in when the music is good.

yesterday, i had a chance to meet benson - ceo of esplanade. he was sharing about how he has to grow the audience and attract good performers to singapore. he used the word 'grow'. it takes time. but if we do not know what we want in the future, how can we work towards it?

Does this mean we have to start posting what each of us want? Maybe we could gauge something out of it.

I want honest and hardworking music lovers performing, not fame-searching money-groveling ones. I guess that's the most basic thing before I even start going into standards..

Oh by the way James , I saw your face inside the Esplanade documentary VCD while I was doing my school project on the Esplanade a few months back. The documentary interviewed benson as well.

Anyways back to topic. Perhaps I'm sure what we want out of this music scene is to generate quality of local talents and not quantity of local talents.

I would do a modification on James's tax concept. A little bit of economics stuff here.

Where an inflation occurs in a country , what does the govt do? One practical way to tackle this is to increase the tax rate. I forgot what kind of policy is that (is it Fiscal Policy?). When the tax rate increases , the people's purchasing power will decrease proportionately. Of course people will KPKB and start to curse and swear at the govt but what they don't know is the govt obviously is in a much better position to understand the entire situation and knows what is best for the country. When the people's purchasing power decreases , the demand for goods will fall and when the demand for goods fall , the prices of goods will eventually fall until the demand reaches normalcy.

Think of it as this way ,

increase tax = increase the magnitude of gigs and restrictions for performing.

decrease people's purchasing power = decrease number of available gigs

People KPKB at the govt = you get the picture

Govt = people who are well conversed in the music scene. Eg. Gig organisers , SOFT....

Prices decreases until normalcy = our local music returns back to its original state.

heh, whats up with the connection of those when for a start, we cant even arrive at something that we might be able to do now?

I have given my suggestion for the one year trial thing for a start, so wheres other suggestion that for a start, that, few might be able start doing something outside the context of a forum which are all written in words about doing things...

SOFT gig organisers discussion forum?

Book some place (no need to be grand thou) and invite gig organisers to this discussion forum.

Discuss on matters pertaining to this thread and at least educate them on the adverse effects of being too leniant with bands.

Yeah I know but perhaps we are "interfereing" with his affairs if we decide to ride on his event. But then again I might be wrong.

But hopefully James could have a chat with him or something.

you might like to pm him first and check whether is he or are they into the idea of of what had been said here. If yes, sit in, if no, do what you believe in, instead of waiting for bosssoftboss to start the thing for something which you have suggested in the first place.

Just imho..
