Slyvester sim, my guitar hero.

if a community like SOFT cannot support/encourage a fellow musician whose live hood depends on music/entertainment, what good is SOFT for?

James, while a lot of the criticism here is unwarranted and reeks of bitterness IMO, I believe at least one of the charges is justified- that of misrepresention abt the arranger of the song.

Everybody knows what soft.com is here for, its mission, and I believe it has the support of most of us.
So do we support indiscriminately, or do we push for greater integrity, honesty and genuineness in our artistes? Music is ultimately self-expression, and I believe that when pple see that genuineness, they will appreciate. Doesn't matter if it's pop or metal or technical or non-technical. In my ideal world, soft.com should support such artistes.

Are we in such a desperate state that we have to pamper and mollycoddle every artiste that comes up? Will they grow as individuals and musicians if we do so?

SOFT: So maybe we should encourage people to take credit for something that they didn't do then?

Alright maybe we did it in a pretty harsh way?

To Sly:

If you see this, kindly take note, do not take credit for something you did not do. It isn't nice and it will make other people unhappy. Hey your guitar playing isn't so bad, anyone start off somewhere, practise hard and you'll improve.

Good luck and rock on! \m/

Aiya I missed!

Congrat Sly... you are the FIRST LOCAL SOLO GUITARIST to be on National Television. 3 Cheers for you! I hope will inspire those who havent pickup the COOL GUITAR as their instrument....

One day we should have GUITAR IDOL on TV man!!!!!! MAN!!!

ONE DAY!!! GUYS here...keep practising! Gosh... I must bring back an amp and guitar.... Can you guys imagine I GOT NO GUITAR AT HOME!!!

Vaiyen, we do not have to pamper nor do we have to belittle.

when we do not have a forest, treasure every sprout.

hey kerr, will make my way to your gala soon.

**********************

To all those who are unhappy about Sly's few minutes on tv, let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

In a way, the so called "local music" is very much like the political situation in singapore. we are small, lack of talents, not supportive, rivalry among ourselves, keep complaining, dont improve and not in touch with what the people want!

in order to grow bigger, we need to wake up. every little step forward, with the bigger picture in mind, we know we will succeed.

some of the yesteryears young punk like myself has penetrated the mainstream and working our magic to lift up the "local music" dream. you can see there are more gigs, more music shops, more media coverage, more people wanting to play music, more music school, more recording school ... more of everything related to music.

for those who believe in the "local music", help support this dream. you will decide if we will have a better "local music" scene tomorrow.

james i guess some so called non-conformists just cant accept a real life fact that there is a demand for certain stuff by the mainstream audience and firms are willing to supply these "products" to the paying public, at the end of the day it all boils down to simple economics and business. consumers can buy what they want, if they can pay for it. so the ah bengs and ah lians want sylvester to pose with a guitar and want to pay to see him do it, he wants some cash, the music company wants some cash, why not throw him a guitar for a few poses everyone gets what they want, happy days.

james, i'm inclined to agree with your statement about the treasuring of sprouts, but i gotta say, we have to be discerning about what 'specie' of sprout will we be nurturing and supporting. (after all, it wouldn't do to have weeds in our garden, right?)

lack of talents ... dont improve and not in touch with what the people want!

firstly, talent is there. in abundance, imo. and much of it is already in display.
second, we do improve. being 'not in touch' with what the general public want, maybe not. however, i think that while some of us might be in touch with what is 'fashionable' in society right now, society is being spoonfed by the media with that which is termed 'mainstream'. what people want, we don't want. what we want, they don't want either. it would be a compromise of our beliefs if we took to performing exactly what people want, that is, imo, not the way to go. while commercialisation and publicity is good, music as mentioned earlier should be about expressing yourself, again, imo.

every little step forward, with the bigger picture in mind, we know we will succeed ... more of everything related to music.

and success we have, to a certain degree at least, thanks to the efforts of yourself and those many other gig organizers, and whoever else is actively promoting local music.

with that said, perhaps sly had his reasons for saying whatever he did, and doing whatever he has done. but he performed for charity, and he has done his part, no matter how small(it is in people's eyes). in light of that, do cut him some slack.

heh, blahblah, great point! plus there might be ah beng converts too! they'll see his sexy jem, go online search, find out about vai, and tada! we have a new guitarist to be!

I believe that Sly did say something like "it's not arranged by me.." during the actual show itself, but the posters seem to have conviniently overlooked that.
Don't be like the typical Singaporean, nitpick/complain this and that, and nothing gets done. You can do better? Go practice your guitar, and get a gig!

Pier.

Then lock this thread up then. We won't go anywhere anyway.

Perhaps next time we should do all the same for such threads. This way we can have more time to practise and do better than others.

Anyway, let's all be our carebears again then.

Cheers!

Kwerty, big things can start small.

1 place full of carebears, is the OM section, its just a couple of clicks away.

Why don't you (and other similiar minded individuals) start there?

I'm quite tired of these carebear statements on the music scene, but when it comes to the OM Section, people give the thumbs up for mediocre, or even poor, work.
