Note: On the slightly more composed version ,its just a short part of the song... its like 12:45 am now, and I think its wiser to sleep now rather than die at work.

hehe. i can hear the sloppiness here and there. (you're still better than me on an off-day though. argh...)

i thought you could introduce more chording into the playing... maybe have a bit of a motif (same riff) somewhere in the song?

there're lots of licks to extract from the video.... very very cool.

well... i guess... time to plan this song out nicely man... then you'll have a complete song ahead! 8)

Hey Thor... thanks for checking this out. Appriciate the effort you take to comment constructively.

This is a backing track from Guitar Techniques Magazine so just thought I'd throw something over it for fun.

1 thing I've been struggling with... is getting warmed up quick. I mean... this vid is an example of no-warm-up-wanna-try-to-play syndrome.

You like chording eh? ;)

after listening to this tune, i think i'm the most boring player here- i don't bend, i don't vibrato...

i often emply legato passages in alternation with a picked passage, this is to ensure that no lethargy inducing mistakes set in 8)

Wow... sub. You are prob the SOFTie with the most posts. And erm... this is your first post in OM! :) Welcome to the OM section Sub! 8)

I've never seen/heard you play before Sub... guess you are a shredder from what you posted. ;)

I'm trying to move over to legato because after the years of trying to get my picking up and going, I realised I can't do it as well as I would like to. Hence my shift to legato-ing. But what you say makes senses, a lot of sense. Unless I play with 0.08s downtuned to D.

can i ask what scales you were using for the solo? or what tones you favour? so i can try some of it out.

Ah... I like to use the lydian mode note... a sharpen 4th a lot.

If you are familiar with paul gilbert, you would note that I copied his repeating lick a lot. The one that goes from 3rd string to 1st (e) string, 1 - 3 - 4 all the way? A kind of blues penta with notes of the lydian mode.

I was generally playing in the key of C major , sometimes played in F major (essentially mixolydian mode) and lots of C major/A minor pentatonics.

Hmmm... i like to miss landing on the root note, but land on other notes like the 9th (in key of C, its a D) or the 3rd, to give more flavour to the notes.

Ah... this piece uses a lot of power chord voicing (no 3rd) so ... I did try in 1 section to play in C minor but well.. didn't develope it much.

Hope that helps... :)

Nice playing.

Could you post the backing track? I'd like to give it a try, maybe everyone could post their version. :)

That would be nice.

Hey Souljah, thanks for checking it out...

I will post the backing when I get home tonight. :) We should have a section where ppl play over the same backing. There was 1 done a while back...

i think you should get a small lil marshall amp and play on the way to work! This way you don't need to worry about being warmed up later in the day :D

Anyway, nice work.. Though a little bit sloppy..

hey eadricng, thanks for listening in. :) Hahaha... what don't you understand? :D

Yeah man... It is sloppy indeed. I could never warm up fast enough in the morning to handle guitar well enough.

heh, i could never understand those odd sounding stuff....it's like....odd sounding..but doesn't sound off.....you know...off yet it fits...kinda thing...*shrugz*

Ah... i see.. i understand, really. Personally, I could never understand things like free form jazz or experimental jazz, things that go so out of the box that I don't think they ever play in the box!

shredder? me? i wouldn't call myself one, i'm the type who manifests my ideas a lot, very detached to what's correct/ should be correct, just play what's ringing in my head. most of the time it's black metal stuff...

anyway, if we listen to the shred pros like Gilbert & co, we'd be influenced by their all-pick techniques but if you really wanna forge an individuality, you have to move away from their methods & play your own. i'm influenced by Vinnie Moore's philosophy who advocates doing things your own way even if it means being 'wrong' or employing techniques which others find unsuitable. lots of my legato ideas are drawn from Vinnie Moore's materials- adapt & change, never copy.

Frank Gambale on the other hand taught me to work on a certain strong point & make it a signature- i'm currently employing lots of quasi-sweeps into my playing because that's my strong point. i'm a big fan of Gambale but i'm never moved to 'lift' any of his ideas to make it mine. :smt035

so bro, if you can't pick as well as you'd want to, if there's a nother way of doing it, go for it! 8)
