SG appreciation thread

the 61' ri neck is smaller, it is the 60' slim taper neck, same as the ones on the les pauls with the 60's neck.

sorry to go off topic

but abt claptons sg.. he made famous the 'woman tone' by rolling back the tone knob of the neck pickup.

somehow i still struggle to get that tone.

anyone know how?

the '61 reissue isnt heavy la.
its pretty light, both my gibson '61 reissue and orville by gibson comes in at just under 3kg.
i have played standards that are heavier.
my classic is also slightly heavier, but not by much.

neck wise, as all gibsons are still hand sand finished etc...
there are bound to be slight differences in the neck profile.

generally still, standard necks are thicker, but not thick in a bad way.
they fit your palm, making it feel more comfortable.

'61 reissue neck, illusion feel wise, feels 'wider' cos its thinner...
palm doesnt rest as well, guess thats why some ppl dont like it.

i dunno what gibson '61 reissue Godspeed64 tried where the neck gets thicker at the top, cos that neck profile is generally what standards are.
that is why the neck on the '61 reissue is called a slim taper, ie. maintains almost even thickness from 1st to 12th fret.
u sure it wasnt a Chibson or something?

soundwise.
there is still some magic with the '61 reissue.
some have put the exact same pickups in both '61 reissue and standard.
no prizes for guessing which still sounded better.
could be due to the '61 one-piece body.
but most likely due to the '61 getting better quality wood, not to say the wood in the standard is bad...perhaps not aged as much.

construction wise.
'61 reissue has more curves :P
the neck also joins the body slightly further out than the standard.

Only tried one.. And that was my experience with it.. Every SG I've ever touched felt different lah.. So it's hard to say.. Should I recommend a Standard when I've tried both good and bad ones? No idea..

well, '61 reissue of cos costs about 20-30% more than a standard.
tho i have heard more stories of ppl swapping out the pickups on the standard rather than on the '61 reissue...cant go wrong with the '57 classics on the '61 anyway.

basically get the '61 reissue if u know what u want, ie. real classic tones.
the standard has hotter generic-somewhere-in-between pickups, thats why i guess most ppl swap them out to get something more mellower or even hotter.

Just got these babes last week.
All stock parts.
Just wanna share with u guys the pics.. :)

everdying, what are the differences felt between you gibson and orville by gibson?

were they close in make and tone?

been gasing for a 61 reissue for quite a while.

looks like i am getting one soon.

The obg is of cos good and the price is almost the same as a used sg standard
The obg technically is called a 62 reissue and not 61 cos gibson only intro the 61 in the early 90s
Also the obg compared to my 2000 61 is not a 100% copy
Gibson body has more curves...just slightly wider...
pickups also of cos different
but of cos the obg came out in 1988 so if compared to the gibson sg 62 from 1988 they might be almost 100% identical
now i think i gonna put in emg 60A/89 set in my obg soon since i didnt manage to get the duncan prails set i wanted

Navigator are somewhat considered exotic as the use honduras mahogany.so might as well go with Edwards.

I had an SG standard, didn't like it one bit...
Oddly I chose an SG special over it. (no its not because the price)
