PUNK

Operation Ivy went on to be Rancid. I loved the Clash too. Teenage hormones were rushing through my sec school uniform, thinking that I was the silent minority. Oh Yeah~ I wanna riot! A.C.A.B~ hahaha! It was fun. Scribbling Anarchy signs across my textbook. Sigh... must have been like 10 years ago.

Discipline master said my hair was too long and got me to cut my hair or not return to school. So I did, and got it shaven. Came back, and told him that I shaved my head as a form of protest. All he replied was, "You look like a fishball."

I think that music in general is the direct reaction to commercial trends. Punk music had its fall, its revival and now its decline again. Blues and jazz is gaining popularity increasingly. Metal/rock had its revival with Evanecense and The Darkness respectively. (Many may argue, "THEY NOT METAL, PUNK, ROCK! They Posuer!) but hey, they were a derivatitve of the "original" music ain't it?

I'm always open for rebutal. Please keep it clean though. This is an open discussion.

.

I think this discussion has been going on for, like, 10 yrs already. Another long drawn topic is "The State of Local Music".

I think all punks/skinheads/metalheads will all be the same when their mother shouts

"Boy, you coming home for dinner or not? I today cook your favourite fried bee hoon!"

yea true in other words no matter how bad boy u are ure gonna end up listening to ure parents and everyone laughs at u lol knowing that they have the same thing to them  well hey we all depend on our parents eh it dosent mean ure a mammas boy or anything lol

Reading this posts...gets me me thinking...how shallow some people could be..... Hear me out... Punks ARE NOT idiots.....
Dun generalise.....there's the punk movement, punk music, and punks..... so wad are u referring to?
The Punk movement's based on the ideology of being a second class citizen, discriminated against and speaking out for what u felt was right....It was predominantly popular in Europe and originated in Britain...Punk music is a channel for expressing their unhappiness towards political or social matters..... Dun bash the music because you dun noe it!!There are left wing punks and right wings punks....For those who dun noe better they represent the group that are against and for the government respectively.....Tommy ramone is a rightist....every other punk now....seems to be a leftist... WHY? Probably coz it's a trendy thing to do.... To understand the punk movement....it would be to speak out under times of oppression, socially and politically.. for wad u thot was right..though the latter is more prominently fought...I dun think punks are dissidents of the governments...at least not all of them... Punks dress the way they do as a rebellion to social norms and do not give much of a shit wad people think of the way they dress....(Not applicable to S'pore)
For me.... I'm not a punk but i'm in the circle of punk movement...you dun have to dress punk to BE PUNK! it's in the heart..those who openly proclaim themselves as punks Are POSEURS... and ironically...are superficial and fails to be individualistic--- meaning they arent punks!...Punk music is about self express and speaking out against oppression.

Punks are against totalitarianism, and oppression of the masses. Punks are pro civil liberties, and through civil liberties comes self-expression. Self-expression is the main ideal shared by all punks. The idea that you should above all speak your mind, no matter ‘how crazy’ your thoughts may be. Their thoughts may not be exactly coincide with that of mainstream society. Therefor the main stream perceives these ideas to be crazy in nature. With the mainstream thinking them crazy, it is only natural for them to hate mainstream society. They hate the mainstream society, which in their minds oppresses the masses. They generally like to assert themselves to the side of the poor oppressed masses. They try to enact social change for the betterment of these peoples. Anonymous

To cap off my points:
> There are NO punks in singapore....or rather, there's no room for the movement because we do not face the disgruntling political oppression here.
> Punks dress the way they do HERE...coz they either believe in the music.... or are plainly; posing!!!(YEA!! GOOD CHARLOTTE IS SO BADASS!)
> We're too safe a culture and government has a zero tolerance policy to dissidents....Mock Democracy in other words!
> The music is awwesome...I'm a punk at heart....!
> Punk's about self expressionism, individuality, unorthodox or unconventional behaviour, (bohemianism?)
> They are an artist in their own sense...values like: gutsy, intelligence, creativity, dignity..... are echoed.
> They are actually rather intelligent.... assessing political agendas, contitutional matters they understand and have a very strong point of view of things.....often very defensive of their values and beliefs.

Much spoken, ideologies often sound perfect but due to human flaws...They always fail in a practical world....punk started with great motives but being overran with pride and misguidance/mis-preaching, it evolved to a culture of dissidence and often related to violence and aggression....Juz like socialism...... But hey...nothing's perfect?!

allriitte...after all of that..i just wanna sing...

"Destination unknown! Ruby ruby ruby ruby soho!"
:butthead:

by the way..spongebob is funny.

hey ho let`s go!!!!!!!

yeah true!!!!!
we love the music.we love the life.
u people wanna b judgemental...take a look at urselves 1st.....
understand the culture b4 making any comments ...this i say again!!!!

:supz: :supz: :supz: :supz:

.

Chiam See Tong, Chee Soon Juan, JB Jeyaratnam, Low Thia Kiang, and Steve Chia are punks cos they go against the govt?

I don't see safety pins piercings around their faces. I'm sure that they don't listen to punk music.

Can a young Singapore punk speak out against the govt publicly just because he listens to the Clash, Sex Pistols ?

Punks are definitely not idiots. but you got the balls or not?

That's a rhetorical questionpretty much...if you refer to my post you can see that there is nothing to protest against with the current state of our government......ur 'got balls anot' question is pointless then...but if you must insist.. of course i have...two for the matter....not very big but it's working fine! :partyman:
If the situation arises where there are prejudical constitutional matters YES! I would speak up against it...but so far...NONE! :smt011
Next, Juz because you listen to the music does not give u the right to speak out agst the govt....it's wad you think is politically/socially fair... :smt018
The politicians you named are just legal representatives of the opposition party....if you bother to read ur social studies book carefully...democracy is about choice and liberty...with that comes differing values and beliefs encompassed within each party....thus providing people with choice.. they are still within the legal rights of the constitution to speak up and aren't dissidents... :smt066
The post war era has no room for punks....zilch....unless you are an American living in America?....or a very pissed off iraqi...

Queer... I'm still looking for the post for someone whom has "bashed the music". My stand point is not to be judgemental on anyone unless you wanna be judged yourself. If you want to judge people and cannot tolerate to be judged, then the entire debate would become ironic.

Can you please tell me where did you get the source for left wingers and right wingers? I'm really interested to know, and not trying to put you down for what you believe in. Everybody has a right to their own opinions right? I just would like to know why punk music is so closely knit with the entire, anti anti thought. So was the music a churn out of politics or was it the other way round?

Dude... take a breather. Relax, close your eyes, take in deep breathes, think of open green pastures, streams... bunnies... deers... flowers... zzzzzzzzzz..............

hahaz...I'm sorry if i came across as a tight ass mutha*****....hmmm left wingers and rightists as mentioned was 'conceived' by the American Punk movement.... If you go to punkvoters.com....that is a left wing website.....it is against the democratic party ie: BUSH..... The Right wing website...I forgot.....but i came across it in mxtabs.net...It was a retaliation to the bush bashing that is ever so popular nowadays.... It is a group of punk voters who are for the Bush administration...(currently...) i read about it too in "X-press Magazine" whilst studying in Aust..... Yea so yep...
I was feeling pissed by the post starter...the grunge face kuku bird who made senseless comments about punks and idiots..hmmm sorry..:D..he was really shallow with comments... because of the nature of the political turmoil in the 60s up to the early 90s....punk music became the most popular medium to convey messages of policial relations....the movement came first.... music thereafter.. anti thoughts were part of that era..not that much of the late 90s to now....until the recent War on Terror ...by the ass wipe...BUSHSHIT...
I'm thinking of flowers and unicorns and long walks on the beach..wow..i love being naked! hehez...:d Peace guys..
Jason

yea punk was never much about polictics b4 now it seems dat it is lol well i guess punks shud grow up to be politicians and get shot dead i dunno

Political issues relate to social, economical and bilateral conditions....so yes...punk was/ still is about the politics...i suggest mjollnir stop being an ass wipe and pick up some books on reading about the various wars that has happened...namely the vietnam War...Gulf War....and go furthar back to the first and second world war.....check up on history before speaking out.....you juz sound like a complete moron with no clear substantiation of your facts....FYI....the majority of the punk community in Australia spoke out directly at the govt decision to send troops into vietnam....when the troops return not juz the 'punk' community spoke out....the whole friggin nation (76% to be exact) protested against the govt decision....to speak out against politics doesnt make u a punk....period.... was martin luther king a punk? well he certainly spoke and and got shot...think be4 u speak.... Anyway...u posted the qn but you are deviating off topic..... you have not posted one single thread that backs your view on why PUNK was 'never much about politics' and wad do you consider 'their shit'....

punk often challenges mainstream ideologies and way of lives...so technically...hmmm..no....though the movement did not specifically start out to challenge ideologies.... it was juz about being disgruntled and speaking up about atrocities but people manipulated the system...so it has been exploited to go against social norms....EG: peace, prosperity opposingly, anarchy and social equality....ironic u say?? Well..human's are flawed...leaves u thinking eh...;)

Anti-flag sure doesnt dress up as punks. They dress up as any normal people. But they write tons of anti-government, anti-capitalist stuff. I can say they are punk at heart without dressing as one. For me, I love punk music. But that does not make me punk. I do not believe in what punks believe in.

So here's to punk music! :partyman:

The first punks were ppl who didnt give a shit bout anything, some were anti government, some feel outcasts of society or some shit. I personally think that punks deserve that name. PUNK. Cause they're just a bunch of punks.

That's quite an unwarranted accusation Mad Kidal...but oh well. it's personal opinion..let's keep it at that eh..;)...
I'm tired.....zZzZ...

I personally agree with pyro on most parts of wad he had said
