n dun judge me if u dun know me.....

hey Dirt

i dont think anyone is discriminating against punk music. just that some people who claimed to be punk tanished the punk image by commiting devious act.

it is always like that. Rock and Roll is associated with Drugs and Sex too! And Rap is associated with violence. Maybe 1% are the naughty ones. The rest of the people are just in it for the music. :smt035

the punk culture now is more about the stuff they wear.. those leather jackets, metal studs or whatever... yeah.. its more of a fashion statement. so people find it cool but some people don't. its just someone's point of view.

then the culture.. abt the roots... they're all gone... no offence.. one example... ""have you ever seen punks protest openly against the government? cause i read somewhere that the original motive of punks was to get the rights from the british government (dunno if im right here) cause they're poor and shit the government don't give a damn.

music-wise, its really difficult to define cause later people will argue about who's punk and whose not.

im no punk either like most of you so i may be wrong somewhere in the text.

Nowadays "punk" is about the clothes you wear and what hairstyle you have and whatever......for some reason it also gives you the authority to make fun of and disturb other people. I can't count how many times i've seen groups of "punks" laugh at old people or other really random things.

I don't mean any offence to anyone truly into punk and what i've posted are just my unhappiness towards what some stupid teenage posers have done to change people's view of punkrock ...heck nowadays wearing a stupid hat with those holes at the back part or whatever they call it makes you a "punk"...oh well so much for my rant for today.

Punk is getting a bad rep here in S'pore mainly due to the bunch of losers who always hang around Peninsular and City Hall area.

Show me a punk who prowls around alone doing the usual 'punky' things and I will respect him for his guts.

Those who committ all kinds of mischief in big groups?
Cowards.

yeah. i think punks here just dress that way and yell "oi! oi! oi!" because they think it's cool to "not care what everyone else thinks".

but what about the roots of punk? whatever happened to the safetypin earrings meaning something? what happened to protesting social inequality?

being a punk used to mean that you were openly fighting social problems; it used to mean that you were openly fighting for your right to be treated as well as everyone else; it used to mean that you were openly fighting against class discrimination. it was positive and proactive and they believed in bettering society.

it didn't mean that "you don't care what everyone else thinks". in fact, it had nothing to do with that. it was about doing what's right in the face of adversity.

being a punk isn't about giving yourself the right to do what you want. being a punk is about serving society by being obligated to do what's right. so if you dress like a punk and behave like an a-hole, that's all you are. an a-hole. you're not a punk, you're an idiot. but anybody can be a punk by standing up for what's right in the face of adversity, even if they don't wear tight pants or studded belts.

Punks are born because of the diffeciency of the goverment. The goverment nowadays may not be the best, but what more can we ask for?

i agree, to a large extent. that's kinda why i'm surprised at the existence of the political punk dresscode here. i believe people who dress like politial punks are pretenders. i think they do it for the fashion and shock value, and because they think that because they dress outrageously, they have the right to behave without respect to others, and that the core of being punk is to do what you like.

this isn't the right attitude to take, i think.

im quite sure the rise of punks are to fight for what they are lacking towards the goverment.. but in singapore.. does the goverment owes anyone anything? ive said since our goverment may not be the best but the poor still could ask for subsidise in schools etc.. even NTUC provide free stuffs for the poorer family.

why and what do we need punks here for? if you say america or another country punks still exist i might believe. to conclude, the punk nowadays are just a blind follower of fashion.

im not saying those punks here are posers, but are they punk enuff? does they behave like real punk? do they wear like punk 24hrs a day? or does they behave like punks outside and when they got home, they take everything off and enjoy life? air con.. good food.. stay in condos and bunglows.. is that wad punks should live/be like?

aiyah.. just say they are interested in the punk culture but not punk can liao lah..

So what's the real problem here guys?
People want to dress as punks, let them be lor.

You mean only surfers or beach goers can wear berms and tees + coral bracelets etc izzit?

Or only ah bengs and ah lians can wear gucci or prada or whatever huh?

So how? Like that very jia lat leh. Wear what also must think twice.

David Beckham cut mohawk, how come no one say he poseur?

If cut mohawk already, must curse and swear and hold protests, kenna jailed for social unrest and chaos, then consider not poseur izzit?

Give it a rest lah. If others feel comfortable with their dress sense, let it be then.

Why go around criticizing and accompanying their clothings with their behaviour? Don't understand man.

You are missing the point. We are debating their culture and beliefs. Clothing is but a peripheral issue.

Of course you do have one. You mean you're in doubt?
Then im so sorry. I retract my statement

Back to Vaiyan's question, how do you define a punk?
If not by their clothings, your statement lacks credibility.

Vaiyen said:
usually they know nothing and fight for nothing but just want to look 'cool'.

That's quite apparent and it's reflected across this entire thread.

People perceive and identify punks by their clothings, and their outlook atop their bodily apparels.

Let me break it into easily digestible context for you, in case you're on a low glial cell diet.

Vaiyen said:
in other words, don't be a poseur.

How you relate a poseur? By his actions? His beliefs? His dressing?

In actual paraphrasing, a minimum quality or trait to fulfil being labelled a "poseur" would require 2 contradicting factors before it's taken into effect.

Hence, when you describe "punks" as poseur, the choices would obviously have to be taken into account, before any outcome was determined and settled conclusively by you.

Which i can safely assume and conclude that, the 2 factors would be,
a) Bodily garments or adornments
b) Behavioral Antics

In this case, ah bengs or ah lians immediately disqualify themselves from the above argument, as the flaws are obvious. They do not dress up as punks, furthermore, their ludicrous acts alone does not justify.

And a direct quote from Brake, punks are defined as
"Lurex, old school uniforms, plastic garbage bags, safety pins, bondage and sexual fetishism were developed into a self-mocking, shocking image. Hair was shaved close to the head, dyed out- rageous colours, then later spiked up into cockatoo plumes of startling design".

First came the image, then came the movement.
Simple fact, people identify punks by their clothings.

Which in this case, your rebuttal holds no water and has a strong absence of credibility.

By the above presentation of evidence and summarized testimony, I see 2 contradicting factors existing within you.

a) You identified them as punks by their apparel
b) You feel that they're posuers, who dress up as punks, yet does not behave like one.

Hence, can i safely assume that you're a poseur as well?

hey ho let`s go!!!!!
