PUNK

btw to bleedsnomore, i think the mcdonalds article is really interesting but people when u read it, please realise that it is an EXTREMELY one sided view. If mcdonalds disappears... no more double cheeseburgers and mcspicy doubles:(

Singapore cannot protest ah.. 4 people = Max or something.
3 students that time protest against the myanmar junta thingy. Then got into alot of shit.
Then the 1 man opposition dude, go public to speak, kena caught by police. Jia lat man!

Anyway we say punks and criticize them also no use, cause the 'deepness' of belief, for lack of a better word, varies between the individual.

Many hardcore punks dress in t-shirts and shorts and you wouldn't be able to tell them apart from an average passerby. What they do is boycott huge coporate companies like Nike who use sweatshop labour (i think), and stuff like that.

Some punks are more environmental issue inclined, some fight for homosexual rights and acceptance. Animal rights also have..

I guess in an authoritarian country like Singapore. Its more 'wise' to be a 'personal' punk la, instead of a loud angry political street punk, which could get you into alot of sh1t.

And moreover, nowadays, metal bands and indie bands and a whole bunch of other alternative genre bands all also fight some of the same issues.. which is a good thing! :D

what punk u guys talking about?? punk sai?? lol lol dont mean to offend u punks out there.. yeah i agree, punk in singapore is no longer the old skl punk it was back then.. it became a fashion statement

Yes, It Is. And Perhaps You Should Start Sparring Your Caps Lock Tab A Bit More.

haha bro i capped it dunno why it didnt come out. but yes, PUNK IS AN IDEOLOGY, NOT A FASHION STATEMENT (or a reason to eat leftovers at longjohnsilvers right bleedsnomore HAHAHA)

nope i truly think punk is no longer an ideology, especially in Singapore. "Punk" as it is here in singapura are those people with monster hair and the tightest and most tattered jeans EVER. People who refuse to support MNCs who misuse the labour force in other countries would be, in my opinion, SUPER insulted to be called a punk. Like my dad hates tommy hilfiger but if i call him a punk, a shotgun comes out. so yea the ideal and original "Punk" culture might have been much more meaningful but right now in singapore, it is nothing more than a dressing trend/agent of act-cooling/excuse to use eggs to style hair/reason to eat garbage

=syed_zack

yeah... punks in singapore are posers... the scene was so much alive bck then..
these days they thought being punk was cool...

punks in singapore now are simply " AH BENGS WANNABES "

even adelphi skinheads already like matreps...

wads up thse unfriendly gestures ??

im a skinhead and it embarrassed me to see hw u guys act to the public !!!!

oi for music and ur rights !! not oi for the sake of being a matrep !!

ur a skinhead !! not a 369 member ..

they listen to hardcore punk, ska punk, OI...

examples: the casualties, left alone, cheap sex, cockney rejects, cock sparrer and many more

aiya!...i also have punk friends...all act wanna anarchy but also never do anything in singapore how to be punk when everything is government government government correct??summore singapore punks dont behave lyke punks sleep in street steal things eat left overs and stuff and they live in hdb which is also own by government go school also own by government lol then all at school and outside wanna act they are rebelious police come confirm diam diam one

Hahaha so true.. A friend of mine(from work) used to be in the old crust punk scene. He told me there was once, he and other 100-200 punks smashed mac donalds at some places and when the police came, they all dispersed in different groups and meet at the arranged meeting point later. Those are punks. Not those who sit outside penin, esplanade and hang out in big groups but dont do shit.

Well, that means most of you, more or less, have been brainwashed into thinking what a punk should be, a poor leather jacket wearing dude who shoplifts and eats leftovers and sleeps in the streets..

Those 'posers' you guys mentioned, I don't think they're trying to act punk, most are just wearing skinnies and band tees and have the new 'emo' style of hair. We refer to them as scene kids, not punk posers..

so there is punk--->punk posers--->scene kids

it gets more complicated.but i hate the last bunch of douches.

absolutely right pedalite. just because you smash a mcdonalds doesnt make you a punk. just because you dont doesnt make you not a punk.

and as for punks going to government schools, well i dont really think we have much of a choice here. trying enrolling in the american school or some other private school. i believe regular singaporeans arent even allowed to do so.

education is critical to punk. much of punk philosophy is modelled after writings of many celebrated 'intellectuals' (although it would be wrong to give them this label) including Noam Chomsky. so as weird as it sounds, it is NECESSARY for punks to go to school, get educated, and only then can they realise for THEMSELVES (as opposed to being told) that the system is bullshit.

tim098: just because your dad hates tommy hilfinger doesnt make him remotely punk. i hate tommy hilfinger too. i much prefer hush puppies. very much softer.

and this has nothing to do with punk or any of the content in this thread.. pls stop spamming ur gig dude.. :?

and btw, devilyangel, read my previous post, where i wrote about rights as a citizen.. :)

agreed bro.. u can't be a punk if u are ignorant abt the issues of the world, go out every saturday to just sit and drink beer at city hall, and then u realise that the system shud be abolished, without an apparent reason.. u'r more 'decent' to be called a scum..

there is a fine line between being a rebel, and being stupid. being uneducated, being homeless, eating leftover food - are just weak weak ways to draw attention to the cause. there are punks are out there who are rallying people to their cause and from a zine i read, most of them are educated intellectuals. would you rather join a group of noisy lameass bums or people who actually know what they're talking about.

singapore is lacking in those who practice what they preach (dressing up doesnt count) and are convincing doing it. if there are any of them here, speak up, cos you deserve my respeck. but to be honest, i dont want to be labelled as a punk. in fact i dont want to be labelled because once you label yourself as something, you tend to be very narrow minded, and that my friends, is how not to be a punk. be open to ideas, but stick to what you believe in.
