Pentatonic usage improv jam - dhalif

This doesn't sound like something too hard to prove. Webcam face guitar, show strum with sound. Move webcam showing guitar cable leads to ds1 moving moving showing leads to computer line in. Done.

Shredcow,

Just saw your comment:

"I think you are still the same - very safe, normal playing. Good techique but its a rehash of a lot of good guitarists out there.

Its your "style"... nothing more to say actually - Its just good playing but nothing interesting/new/innovative, which is probably not your aim hmmm?"

and,

"Sorry dude, it just doesn't happen that way especially when you play rhythm, which you have claimed to do so for some of your clips.

I'm using an MIJ DS-1, silver screw, momentary LED - that's way smoother than the MIT DS-1 you claim to use, it does NOT happen even with the guitar's tone down AND the DS-1 tone down."

You come across as extremely arrogant , which is fine if your own music was any good. After checking out all the songs on your site, i find your music to be completely unlistenable, heavy handed trash which labors way too hard to be "interesting/new/innovative". its got that weird feel of a guy going out of his way to sound fresh.

The recordings are poor, the mixing is bad and the guitar playing, well, this guy dhalif would put you in his pocket 100x over (comparing chops, feel, vibe, emotion)

worse still, you have the audicity to call the guy out and expose him on his gear, and question his ability to achieve his tone. amazing. all under the banner of "not fooling the young ones" what a load of crap

get over yourself

dhalif

Hi

Well i like dhalif's playing but anyhow Shredcrow has a point there ...about the innovative and stuff AGAIN i wasn't saying Dhalif is totally NOOB... just agree with some points shredcrow brought up thats all

hmmmmm........ I've been listening to Dhalif's playing since god-knows-when... the overall mix has certainly improved.

Maybe he EQ-ed here and there.... which I think it's fine.

As a rule of thumb in music mixing; To make something stands out from a mix, the tone needs to be cut thru above rest and not louder.

Maybe he did just that and it's sounded good. Generally, layman tend to < the volume just to be heard. But always remember, once you gain up the overall volume, all you get is just blaring of the sound. Timbre or tone of the whole sound became redundant.

Maybe it's just the mix, and not the gears that someone used or thru something else.

*been using alot of maybe.... I'm just speculating only thru what I've heard so far.

lolz this thread is getting interesting...

before James sees this thread...Id just say...Grinder...ease up...its one thing to have an opinion..its another to purely insult someone....whats ur opinion is yours...but you must learn how to maintain some decorum.....and speak sensibly without your biases in the way....

I think both Dhalif and Danial have an equal number of fans on this forum...I admire them both...Dhalif for his control and speed and Dan for his innovation(which is again a matter of personal taste)...hope to jam with both of em someday...shld be a great learning experience...as for this thread...I would love to personally see and hear the ds-1 into line in...because my own experience completely contradicts anything dhalif said and I would definitely love to learn what his secret is.. god knows the amount i spend on gear...maybe theres another way

Lets keep things plain and simple without flaming...

Opinions are like assholes...too many of both on this forum

hi

Well i've read on Marty Friedman's comment on guitar soloing which i do agree, " IMPROVISATION" does make you diff from other guitarists..becoz most of the techniques or basically "things" we play.. already been done by others over and over. I do believe Marty is famous for his improvisations on scales, licks etc etc. Well hes like the pioneer of Japanese scales applied into rock music, and his new age music creation is superb. Personally i feel... among all Guitar masters i dislike Paul Gilbert's way of playing because his improvisation is pretty weak .. all his scales are basic scales...which you can find in the "BOOK", just that his pickings bendings etc etc whatever are perfect. Thus, i dont blame him tho hes a guitar trainer in Berkley, so hes used to A B C. But again hes a perfectionist tho, i just dislike his stuff because i realised that after reading and watching Marty's Stuff after the age Cacophony. And not all rock guitarists are able to feel New age music, Indian Music, World Music, things like Yanni, Kitaro, Enya, Kamal Kuranesh and alot more..New Age Music composers, and from these composers you could have more ideas in your rock playing if u know how to make use of the knowledge..and apply into your playing. Well that is only my philosophy in music ..its just me tho ..not sure of other people..my friends laughed at me once i told them "In my opinion the Hindi Song entilted " Kuch Kuch Hota Hai" is a VERYYYY superb composition, unique, full of passion, the notes are just crazy!" they laughed at me lol. BTW music is very subjective. I' m just sharing my thoughts with yall u dont have to agree tho :)

lolz...kuch kuch hota hai eh...I hate that song....but yea a lotta indian music has lovely choices....influenced my playing a fair bit

hey ..im not surprise on Dalif`s recorded tone...
as i`ve tried recorded some stuff just by using od..

old sch uncle ..swear by ds1 and overdrive...no boutique gadget no fancyful pu`s to play back in those days...sweet warm tone from the strat..

so i rest my case...just ask Rosli what he uses ..a stock ds-1 ..
but his tone kills..i just cant hav enuf of Gates of Babylon...
almost pee on my pants :)

anw back to the playing

this time around i didn't really enjoy it much, prob coz i can't get any good ideas out of the same backing track    , and imo i think its the track i didn't really like, anw too much fast stuff, not that i wouldn't but well juz blame it on the backing track, and yes i'm the idiot that gave it 4 out of 5 stars on youtube

Its hilarious to read up on people who would only voice their opinion here and probably not in real life.

Its a forum lah, my goodness Grinder. If you want to make a point.. gee, i don't know, do you say those things to a person in real life? There are 2 schools of people, 1 group who favours the norm, 2nd group who would favour the out-of-norm. You are in the 1st group. That is fine. Its is normal for either group to not agree with one another and it is also normal for one group to be very condensending on the other like you.

Audio, you should meet up instead of assuming how I am like. Its quite sad to see you forgo normal human communication and place an emphasis on what is mere words.

penguin, take an od, line in, record power chords. Don't need fingers for that. Do it, and find out for yourself what truth there is. I can also use a DS1 to play. Many have done so. It is not a lost art. Heck, some just go straight to amp.

Some people are beyond reproach... bring up valid points, one gets burned. Some people are always within reproach, you don't need to bring up valid points - just slam them anyway you deem fit - its an online world, wizard of Oz persona.

Dhalif great playing and chops as always man. 8)

You got a very nice rock player type feel, I love it man, reminds me of the 80s! The era which I miss the most.

Bro check out some stuff by Rob Marcelo, I'd bet you'd like him.

Thanks for sharing man.

I'll have to agree with Grinder's take on the overt focus on 'innovation'. How can one innovate when one hasn't obtained a basic grasp of the language? I feel that for anything a minimal mastery of something is needed before one can innovate. Take a song everyone knows like 'Happy Birthday'. How many ways do we know how to play it? Raggae, swing, blues rock? It's a simple song and yet how come many of us fall flat on our faces improvising a simple tune at a party, despite being able to 'shred'.

I'll use cooking as an analogy as its one of my hobbies. Take sage, rosemary and worchestershire sauce, rub it on sting ray and bbq it. Innovative yes, but tastes awful. Why? because the person has no mastery of how individual spices will contribute to the taste. Extreme e.g would be chilli sauce with vanillia ice cream. There is nothing wrong with a regular usage of known formulas. U speak english, I speak it too, how we deliver it is another thing. The nuances are what counts

There was a program 'Rock Honours' recently on TV, you look at all the classic rock bands, pentatonic based etc but still, they've got their own touch and sound. So what if you use pentatonic predominantly, you want to use it, use it. You can play the same lines as KISS but u'll never sound like them. Just like a stand up comedian. You can imitate Chris Rock's routine , but you will never deliver it like him. It's not the note's you choose per se, its the delivery that's ultimately the most important. Invariably we'll sound like someone at some point. Just like the way we write and speak. Does it mean you speak English I have to speak something else? That would be ridiculous

And all that talk about what we say in real life or not. I don't think its that important, With people like Xiaxue and Stevenlim.net around, I think your real life persona could suck too. Contribution is more important. Who cares what you do in real life. You could be Peter Parker for all we care. most importantly, Dhalife doesn't come across as pretentious in his playing. Kudos to him. We had enough of ballads that don't sound anything like ballads here. And for people to have generated thousands of posts at an online forum, hasn't virtual reality become reality itself. I wonder what the wizard of oz is really. Maybe I'll ask Harry.

I dont understand your post...some parts taken alone make sense...the rest seems pointless...first you lay the emphasis on being able to improvise well in any genre...and how its not all abt shred...and then u say dhalifs playing was good....??

Dhalif is the king of shredding around here....but this video was just that...it was all abt the shred baby...the mindnumbing speed....I dont see any of the other styles u mentioned....so are u dissing dhalif or patting him on the back...

ps.i like chilla sauce with yoghurt...u talk about innovation and yet u compare it to standards...doesnt work that way my friend...u might build on a standard but the minute u refuse to acknowledge the difference ... you just confessed your lack of knowledge on what innovation is

Shredcow, you have over 7000 posts on this forum. Ironical to say the least, but that more than qualifies you as being one of the "people who would only voice their opinion here and probably not in real life."

Its interesting that you see fit to categorize people who listen to music as either favouring the norm or not.

I would rather people make up their own minds as to whether or not they enjoy your esoteric contributions. The best judges are the listeners themselves. They will tell you if your music is good, or if you are simply a try-hard making overzealous attempts to be fresh.

However, you ARE RIGHT when you say "...its an online world, wizard of Oz persona."

Exactly, with you being the guy behind the shiny green curtain...
