I'd call it a regular opamp/diode to gnd clipping circuit that's tweaked to be pretty good sounding.

AND IMHO thats all it matters. As long as a circuit sounds good it sounds good.

BUT IMHO the crunch box has got only one good sound not too versatile but that one sound is pretty good.
