Opinions on emo

I actually had a thought about something just now but I can't remember it.

Eyes-covering fringes started wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy before this emoTREND sprang into the recently, we all probably should know that. And because the trend is so well-known and the whole "how to be emo" things circulating about, people with fringes covering their eyes often get teased about being 'emo'.

I witness this EVERYDAY in school. I pin up my fringe because I am suppose to have some responsibilites but there are a few people I know who get talked about by many. Of course, they'd laugh about the comments about cutting wrists, as a joke, but after awhile, it is really... You get what I mean.

And the thing is, they're not even doing/listening to anything related to 'emo', except having their fringes covering their eyes (which had always been like that since who knows how long!).
Some would probably say, "go cut your fringe!"
No thank you, my hair is precious.

I've been labelled emo many times because of my fringe.
I'm just waiting for the whole trend to fade away. I think the retro fad was rather short, probably because emo overshadowed it.
But we should always remember, a fad comes, goes and comes back again.
remember those aviator shades?

Speaking of which allow me a metalhead's point of view when it comes to emo fashion. I hope I'm accurate enough to speak up on behalf of the metalheads but here it goes anyway....

As you all should know , metal style of fashion is usually associated with the colour black , eyeliners (for those into goth/death/black metal) , spiked belt , spike bracers , metal chains , leather jacket , black colour lipstick (for those into goth/death/black metal) , tight black jeans , tight black t shirt with....to name a few that is

Now....let's take a look at how many of metal's fashion sense has been incorporated(or should I say ripped off) into emo fashion.

1) Eyeliner (mascara does not make a diff)
2) The colour black
3) Spike belt
4) Spike Bracers
5) Tight black t shirt
6) Tight black jeans

Basically almost every aspect of metal fashion has been directly ripped off by those emokids.

I'm not really pissed about the ripping off but I'm fuming pissed that these emokids have taken metal fashion and "mutated" it into something which is totally contradictive of what the metal culture is about.

The colour black , eyeliner , spike belt etc all symbolises the image of manliness , barbarism , evil , Basically anything to do with showing musculine traits. What these emokids do is that they directly ripped off metal fashion and projected a pussy like image as a result.

I mean as a metalhead , how would you feel? How would you feel to see your own culture being distorted into something contradictive?!

Its like these emokids are diluting their fashion with our metal fashion!!!! Considering the fact that both the metal and emo fashion are almost the same. The end result would be people get easily confused between emo fashion and metal fashion. That's why you see emokids going to Slayer's concert thinking they are "metal" because they think they wear black , wear eyeliner and everything "metal" and so they think they can fit into the metal culture easily.

I give you a similar example.

Let's say a group of us chinese decide to become "renegades" and start giving Ang Pows and presenting oranges to our relatives during Chinese New Year all in the name of bad luck.

I give you Ang Pow because I want you to have bad luck or I present oranges to you as a sign of ,"I hope you gamble your entire life savings away when the IR opens". Now isn't that totally contradictive of what giving Ang Pows and presenting oranges is about? Ang Pows for good luck and presenting oranges for wealth and prosperity. Considering the fact we are ripping off every single culture related to CNY and adding our very own distorted values into it.

If those group of "renegade" chinese continue to grow in size and are allowed to spread their so called "culture" of speading bad luck during chinese new year , let me tell you.....in 20-30 years time , the younger generation of chinese would actually think that CNY is all about speading bad luck to your relatives and friends which I shall emphasise this again , IT'S TOTALLY CONTRADICTIVE OF WHAT CHINESE NEW YEAR IS ALL ABOUT!!!!

And so what about us older generation chinese? Of course we will rebell and start to go against this new culture associated with the chinese new year! We will start to think ,"These people are destroying the true values of CNY , we must not let our very own chinese culture be diluted away by these renegade chinese!!!"

How would you feel to live to see one day that CNY is no more about spreading joy and prosperity to your friends and relatives but rather all about speading bad luck and bankrupcy to your relatives and friends?!

Same thing applies to the other racial festivals in our calender.

I myself do not play metal (although I try to incorporate influences into my compositions) but being a metal music lover , I feel for you metalheads!

Hey DD i agree with you but i disagree on metal and emo fashion are the same because our jeans are different from them emo mofos.. They use girl jeans, the kind which makes you look like you have a flat ass and theirs is really tapered to the max whereas ours is just normal fitting jeans

for the last time.

emo is not about what the straits times reported and what u see the so call emo kiddos doing now.

get your facts right and read the wilkepedia write up dammit.

Haha...I don't think ordinary members of the public have time to scrutinise their jeans under a microscope to actually see what type it is.

Black Jeans = Black Jeans (In the eyes of the public)

@ PinkSpider: maybe you got my point wrong.

by saying emo=emotional, all i meant was emo is a short for emotional. that's all.

i mean, everyone's definitely got their emotional days. some have more, some have less, depending on the awy they look at like. at the same time, different people have different ways of dealing with emotional stress too.

i'm just saying that people are probably looking at the word "emo" in the wrong way. that's all.

cheers.

you can only type what you know mah.. -)

so difficult to be emo. the world doesn't like them, their peers don't like them, even the 'music' community doesn't like them, metal's shamed half cousin..

anyway, it just seems to me, very trivially that so many of us here are just more concerned about the image of a current trend. and all this whining about the 'emo' folk, really make you just as whiney as them sometimes.

oops, i had to say it.

DoubleBlade: u missed something metalheads have that emos dont: long, flowy hair that metalheads use to make them look as dirrty as their guitar sound lol. oh n that metalheads headbang.

btw, some metal bands (modern metal especially) dont incorporate the metal styles that u stated. think Children of Bodom, Shadows Fall, Iron Maiden (Steve Harriss wears football jerseys on stage), Sepultura, Pantera, etc. while eye liner n nail polish is still found in some of the bands, they look like a whole different lot opf metalheads as compared to metal bands of the 80's.

ah what am i saying here...
imo there shudnt be a 'style' for metalheads n metal fans. u like metal u play metal, u like the tight leather pants/ jeans that the bands u like wear, then wear them (if u can fit, since our generation r much more obese than theirs lol), but if u dont juz wear some loose shirt, bermudas n u can still play metal (dimebag's guitar hero was ace freehely, but he didnt dress up as ace on stage).

i think i get some sense of what emo music is. there's some punk influence in it right? the music's quite 'hardcore' right (albeit emo fans dressing up as sissies)?

i had a friend who told me emo bands are bands such as keane, coldplay, snow patrol, etc. that was why i hated emo so much.

imo emo music is way better than the music of snow patrol n etc. the latter seems like they're just disgracing their instruments. but sadly it's those gay bands that are getting big nowadays.
