NKF article

Ahem.....sorry outta action for the past couple of days. Expected enough, there will surely be a tread on this issue.

I laud SPH for bringing up this issue in such a light, it's like a wake up call to all the citizens in SG. Although I always take a stand not to take what is reported in the media, word for word, but even if 50% of what is reported true, its still too much.

ARE YOU TOO MAINSTREAM AND CAUGHT UP IN MUNDANE DAY TO DAY, BEING BLIND ALL THESE WHILE, LAPPING UP WHATEVER IS THROWN UPON YOU MONTH ON MONTH, YEAR ON YEAR??

Time to wake up and look at the real picture. Everything is not happening suddenly, but a cumulative of events and actions through the years. There are blatant signs blarring at us before, but we must be jolted alive by a high current of power to see the light.

I am also a "signed-on" donor, because what I saw before was a picture of doing good. They have these buses going around giving people free medical checkup, which I feel is a very good thing, thus motivated me to help in the cause of helping the needy. Cause you will never know when if you will become a needy yourself.

The true people who are suffering, are the ones who have given up hope upon themselves. These are the people who needs us the most, and there are many of them out there dying and waiting to die, every single day passes by. By helping these people to see hope is the greatest goal of a charity organisation. If a charity organisation neglect this fundamental role, then it should not exist at all. (Note. I am not saying NKF neglect this role, they are still a good organistion in this aspect. I just saying this so as we should not forget the actual role of what it should be)

Thus I do not see NKF as a charity organisation which should be condemned in that light, because fundamentally it's operation still functions as that role. But it's action and accountability on it's secondary role is to be thorughly scrutinised and overhauled.

Do you actually think that the telemarketers who call you, the 1900 numbe you dial, the TV events, advertisments.......etc...etc...are free??? ALL THESE COST REAL MONEY WHICH IS COMING OUT FROM YOUR (DONOR) POCKET.

Can you imagine for every $5 you donate, maybe only $0.50 to $1 will actually goes directly to the needy uses. The rest goes into the organisation's expenditure, advertisments, administrative, assets and even the pockets of people working for the charity organisation???!!! Was the original idea of a charity organisation working out of volunteers own efforts????!!! WHY IS THERE SO MUCH MAINSTREAM COMMERCIALISM????!!!!

Providing care by giving a condusive enviornment and top end service is commendable. But having such a lavish outlay in it's establishment, will not only serve to tell donors you are treating them like fools plionking in money for your extravagence (down the drain). It could even put off the reciepients of the donations of poor background from soughting help from you, as they feel out of place, of they feel undeserving. Sometime a simple outlay is more inviting to needy people. Look here, they come here with a very basic need, thus they only need to fufill that basic needs. Once that need is filled, they leave the place to carry on with their own lives. They are not going to live there themselve??

I don't deny that one day I could be one who may fall ill myself and become a dependent and needy person too. When the day come, I hope that the fundemental roles of such organisations still exist. Or else I may just sit at home and wait to die.

I would suggest NKF to channel all funds raised for their Cancer programme over the last two episode as well as the coming one to National Cancer Society, abandon their cancer programme and concentrate on their core competency.. treating kidney patients. This will somewhat take take some heat away from the current outburst of rage.

As to the future of NKF, as it is a public charity (though stated that the public does not control it), let the public decide. Who would competently represent the public in good stead? Who else than one that is mandated. I think the public can call on the government to restore order and confidence to our benevolent system.

I just want too add. They will look much better if they have shared their donated money with other charitable organisations who needs the money more.

What are you going to do with all these excess??? There are a lot of old folks home operating on shoestring budget, providing very basic care, over populated....etc, etc.

If they have these to report to the public on the more good they could have done. The public may be more forgiving.

Yeah, so here and now you have canvassed so much money, that's great and wonderful. But look at how you have spent the money??? Shame on you......

Good idea!!!! :smt023

We should share more of our money with countries who are always forgotten, example eutopia, africa..........

They just need a basic nutrition, basic medical, basic edcuation.......basic everything.

Which will like cost only a tiny fraction as compared to what we are enjoying right now, our food, our healthcare, our education....etc.

Share and Care..... save the world....

Transcript of court proceedings taken from ST -

Judge:
Why hide the truth? The question was, why hide the truth?

Davinder Singh:
Why hide the truth? You see, if it was completely acceptable, completely above board, why not tell the public this is what you are doing? Why create a totally false impression, as we have seen is this article? (referring to NKF Chariman Richard Yong's quote that nobody flew first class on NKF's money)

Durai:
On hindsight, we should have done that - to say I travel on first class using a business class airfare.

Heehee....in SG, have to register to do anything. I believe more on individual effort. If anyone feels the need to help poorer nations, please do a web search on which organisation you want to deseminate you money from.

Being well informed will be the best way. Be wary of scam sites, alertness will help.

If you belong to any religion, likely your regligious esthablishment will have links to help you send your money to the appropriate channel.

This is a very good way to start from.

For example, being a catholic myself, we have a very diverse network of charitable bodies to channel our donation to locally and overseas. So having a religion is a good thing in that sense.

Don't post here often, but I got a question to ask:

Where should our charity money go now?

I think one good thing the NKF has done is to make people aware of the less fortunate, but now that we see that our money has been used to make certain people more fortunate..

Where should we put our money now?

More guitars?

Maybe someone can identify a nice, good, well-run charity, then maybe we can all chip in and donate under the soft.com.sg name.

Help the poor, and local musicians' image at the same time 8)

It's a fact that aid in the form of money that goes to poor countires often gets diverted into the politician's or ruler's pockets. The money never reaches the people who really need it. The rich get richer through corruption and the poor get exploited.

Its a constant dilemma of whether to donate and wonder where your money went, or just do your part by donating and know that you can have peace with yourself.

i though of that about a year ago, and was supposed to submit a proposal to my manager in the CDC, but it got ditch and nobody cared about it after abt a month....

---edited out ----

i edited everything out. i realized ppl on soft only want to argue and 'be right'.

everyone from the young to the old.

sheesh.

I beg to differ. His fault is concealing and lying about a whole bunch of things, abetted by his board of directors. And since it's the public that pays his salary, if they decide it's grossly exorbitant, it's grossly exorbitant.

The board/ceo remind me of a bunch of kids who had done something wrong, knew it, then tried to hide it.

Now that the facts are out, they try to act adult again, but... TOO LATE!

I wonder if Durai and gang would still be at their positions if they were open from the start.

But I know I wouldn't donate to NKF I knew they had such large reserves. I'd rather help people I know personally.

"oei, can lend me money, i need to buy that new handphone.." 8O
