Neighbour Guitarist needs TUBE AMP too

will do, might drop by his store one day for a test drive. But will it be cheaper than the swee lee sales?

I have to say, they are different. Not exactly comparable. Sweelee sale is probably going to be cheaper - for the sum of the parts. You're looking at a clone (Ceriatone) which uses quality components without a speaker and cabinet, versus a manufacturer which mass-makes the amps - usually in combo format.

You gotta google your way to knowing what's the clones that Ceriatone makes. I wouldn't exactly say a Fender uses inferior parts - that's oversimplifying the equation, but rather, you get what you pay for.

Does it means that it ll be something like an amp without wooden panel? Coz if the amp doesnt have an enclosure i feel rather unsafe bringing it out for jamming or something. Who knows what fool might trip and smash those delicate stuff to pieces..

Phil: wow, its a big difference. With the celestion blue option i may be able to get the ac30 already. Too pricey.

here the vintage 16 is close to S$1300, out of my range for now. I dun know about Laney amps though, coz i haven really search for it. Most of those that i see in the music shops are hardcores (HCM).

Leecs: Hows the hot rod deluxe? I saw a deville in orange guitars. But too loud for me.

You're probably better off getting something from Swee Lee I think, you can make an enclosure but more parts = more money.

well my opinion is since he wants an amp with decent cleans and good overdrive tone my opinion would be to go for an amp designed for that. all the amps u guys have recommended are good for cleans but all require pedals to supplement. and its really hard to find a good pedal which can actually stand up to good tube driven overdrive from an amp. so i dont really see a point in buying something like a blues or pro junior and driving it with a pedal.

Hmm decent cleans + gd overdrive tone
= marshall dsl 401 or randall 50w tube

If youre willing to go for hybrid theres the marshall valvestate 50w and above to fall back on.

I have disagree with that. :) The point of a low wattage tube amp is its overdriven tone which can be achieved at lower volume.

The Randall and Hot Rod I suggested before have dual channels for switching between clean and overdrive, but they're a bit big for the sort of playing/gig requirements he's looking at.

When I (we) were talking about pedals to supplement it wasn't so much suggesting that he rely on distortion pedals for distortion but to use pre-distortion eq or booster pedals to alter the amp's overdriven tone, the "organic" way of playing with a tube amp. Sorta treating the overdriven tube amp like a distortion pedal in the signal chain. Which is why it is important that he gets an amp with the kind of cranked overdrive tone he likes as a base. That was how I used my old Crate 20W EL84 1x10" for small gig venues. Maybe except for when he just wants to drive (in the sense of driving a semi truck) a metalzone through it for that song that requires metale.

Don't want him to get too confused. :P

I m only using pedals like metal zone to support my varied playing style. I cant really get a metal amp like 5150 just for 1 or 2 metals song that i ll be playing can i? So the cheaper alternative i thought was to find an amp with moderate drive and boost it when needed.

Coz, the amp's gain can be increased if its insufficient, yet cant be decreased if its already made like tht.

Just get this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A4PuMFYOpo

You're pretty much there...

Rem, the whole setup counts!

Cow, i think its too small for my prefered wattage. Plus epiphone amps are hard to come by in most places. The controls are too simple as well, i might need to buy lots of add on pedals to make it versatile. 8)

Mikeman, do inform me if u are planning to sell ur Jtm, maybe i ll see if it suits my budget...

ehhh dey... edder is not mrmisse la........

i tot ur visual ghey band still waiting for bobbi brown endorsement???

Well! The main question is, is it loud enough for you? :P That baby has been cranked to the MAX already, has an attenuator there to lower the speaker volume, and just has 1 Fulltone OCD (a marshall vibed drive pedal, moderate gain) pushing it.

As what you mentioned, you use pedals to get to some of the sounds you want to achieve, so ...

Oh yeah... the Epi Valve Jr head is what, $250 @ Swee Lee? Lots of dough left for pedals... hehehe..
