Anyone up there can tell me is there any shop in singapore specifically just selling singaporean made Music album??
I am A singapore made music FANS!

Why should you be Singapore made music Fan......Music wise is it so unique that others (intl artists) cannot produce it??? Do Singapore musicians have tany genre which is unique to this country?? Or is to encourage Singapore musicans??

I honestly think that Music ( or any form entertainment) should not be affetced by regional or relifgional attachemnts....You should like a band if they make music that entertains u....I hope singapore musicans are not so weak that they want ppl to come to them bcos of patriotism ( or sympathy)....they will have to work hard and be competetent with the intnl stds.....As an audience...donot compromise on ur entertainment....then only u will fuly encourage local musicians

we're really not THAT BAD...

SE ASIA THRASH DEMOLITION CD
I am always surprised on the quality of the demos I get from SE ASIA, ripping music, sincere members and great politics. Bands on this are: FASTGAME, EDORA, SECRET 7, DOMESTIK DOKTRINE, FEUD, plus more.....Everyting from fastcore to crust to youth crew. Better than most bands coming from over-hyped scenes these days.

Hey, I guess entertainment isn't purely meant for music.

I mean, bands perform... They do not perform to entertain the poeple. That's not music. Music isn't intended for the listeners to choose when you're doing it.

If they say they want a pop singer and you're a rock boy and you're dying to have some stage performances, so you do it.

That isn't music, people.

To encourage local musicians, they must stand out in their music and firmly believe in their music. They shouldn't care about competing, but just doing their music.

Competition breeds contempt among musicians. Singapore does not have exactly a very huge music industry, I would say even the region does not. So why compete?

And Singapore bands are doing okay.

It's quite a fallacy to say that singing a type of music to get listeners isn't music... : / That's what we call sell-outs and they're the people who're actually entertaining the widest market WITH their music. But in any case, it still wouldn't work if such people DO exist here, considering the listeners has AND WILL ALWAYS HAVE other "better" international bands/singers to listen to. So like it or not, local talents HAVE to compete. It may not be among themselves, but with other overseas music.

My 2 cents. :)

I don't think its competition, its production quality and media blitz. Ever wonder why bands like pug jelly, saw loser, force vomit, west grand, plain sunset, electrico, etc... never reach a huge market or have their shows sold out (aside from plain sunset's "breaking up" show), its because singapore does not have producers, marketers, fanzines, scene magazines, record labels, that can SUPPORT and reach out to kids 13-22 across a huge demographic. The problem lies in the fact that there are only a few shops in singapore (wakemeup, ignite, straits records, etc...) that will distro singaporean local music and advertise it without a huge sum of money placed infront of them. There are no record labels that will allow singporean bands to tour or play bigger shows where they can gain exposure. The problem doesn't lie in the scene, it lies in the "industry" and the people that are running it. The record labels here don't have people working for them who actually listen to good music, and thus good bands don't get exposure and kids are fed the same fucking shit they have been hearing for the past 10 to 12 years because that is how far behind they are. There is enough talent, but the people running the record labels with good distrobution and funding are fucking muppets. Look at Geffen or Island records, or even def jam in its early days, they all took risks on small original bands that were in a make it break it situation, here they play it safe by signing bands that sound like other bands, lets admit it people, west grand, saw loser, electrico sound exactly like a million other bands we've all heard. I am not saying they are bad, and they are loving what they are doing and i respect that. But you wonder why bands can't compete here, its because the only ones that get chances are fucking derivatives, and why listen and pay to hear a band that is a derivative when you could just listen to the original, why listen to firebrands when you could listen to rage, why listen to west grand when you could listen to yellowcard, why listen to saw loser when you can listen to the past 8 years of shit pop punk spewed out by the international industry... I am not embittered and i am not saying that these bands that have gotten big haven't worked for it and aren't talented, its just they are nothing special. And that is what singapore needs, is something special to compete with what already is, something that singaporeans will find totally singaporean and identify with

please refer to the first post in the thread. no point turning every thread into "why singapore bands cannot make it".

Why Singaporean bands cannot make it!! You want to know why?
Simply becos they don't spend enuff time to getting their music right!
If you think overseas bands can really make it, surf the net and check out tons of overseas indie bands out there. There are so many out there, and a lot also with cannot make it music.
It is such that the ones that reach our ears are the cream of the crop.
I was in Australia for 5 years, and watch many gigs performed there. There are also many australian bands that were bad. Count your statistics properly, Singapore have a population of roughly 4 mil, Malaysia have roughly 20 mil, America almost 400 mil, etc etc. Imagine what reaches us from US bands are the best of so many of their own. Of cos, they sound so good.
Overseas bands that come touring to Singapore have already quite some following in their region. They are already commited bands who plans to pursue their music dreams in their lifes, full on! You know how much time they spend in getting their music right, in understanding the music business industry etc etc.
Now, when they come to Singapore, we hear them, then we derive the perception that all overseas bands are so much better than ours. Watch your stats properly.
Only people who have went overseas understand the reality of the situation.
Moreover, with our stressful environment, we spend too little time on our music.
There is so much an occassion where i've heard songs written by local bands, and honestly, i felt those songs really had potential. But often i would realise that their arrangement is not done properly (never go thru long enuff), or their recording is bad (don't want to spend money on proper recording), or their techniques are not employed properly (don't want to spend time to practice). Or also, they spend too little effort marketing their work and spreading publicity. Then they want to jump to the stage and get dissappointed with the outcome.
If you were to read biographies written by overseas acts, you can read on tips of how they did their work. They really spend a lot of time and effort getting their music and putting their work out. And don't talk about money, they also took the poor man's road.
It's not the question of lack of talent, but rather lack of commitment.

Let me ask another question.
Why do Singaporeans keep insulting their own local bands??
Why don't you hear Australians, Americans, or even Malaysian bands criticise their own bands so badly??
Why do Singaporeans keep insulting our local sportsmen so badly??
Why don't you hear the same thing overseas??
Actually, they do!! There was a site i met from Australia called "Save Our Scene" which the owners felt that the music scene there was too weak, so they started a collective to embrace their music industry.
There are also many musicians in Colorado area and sometimes Denver, that criticise the lack of music exposure in their region, so they tried to find ways and means to move to more populated and music areas like Nashville.
"More people squeezed together, the complains gets LOUDER!"

If u talk about Technical skills, maybe local band still got some way to go... but music is not all about technical skill dude. Music is so diverse, and i think local band definitely is there...

my Fav local band is Concave Scream, their effects are great, and i like their song, very melodic.
Anyone when to their last esplanade live performance at the recital studio?

Singapore have producers around, but bands have too little budget. Radio station i won't say anything, the last community radio station Passion 99.5FM died without enuff support from local audience. Saddly!!
I think one angle singapore is really lagging. I think we are lagging Music Marketing Managers!! Funny!! There are so many people studying marketing here, but i hardly can find a music marketing manager around. There's a difference between music manager and music marketing manager. Music marketing manager markets the band's album, image etc etc. Music manager mostly helps the band get gigs..
Bands should engage producers though, abroad bands often do that. Many local bands often overplay their parts, and the songs are not well arranged. It is ok to overplay when playing live sometimes, when you feel shiok! But when getting your album up, the songs have to be arranged in a way that every part brings out the songs emotion's to the fullest and connects well together. I know a lot of musician's would be so uptight about that, it means guitarist have to cut down on their shreds, drummers cut down on their solos, etc etc.. Cos every part of the song has to be catchy and hit you at the right time so you can feel the kick! Now that takes a lot of time of listening and going thru... and is BORING to a lot of bands!! That's where producers come in, they see the overall picture from a third person's perspective, rather than the musician's inside desires to 'show off'...

i think that we have to put in somthing like a huge wave cover SINGAPORE MUSIC SCENE....

both Major and Independent labels in Singapore had set.
they are finding the very 5 star band

and what's 5 star

cool
fame
good music
rich
style

this is one thing which singapore really lack off
dosent support own bands

you see for Electrico <<<<< they are from Major Labels
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they pay everything themselves
from they own equiment to album and video

they gigs can't cover it up....

that's the true...

but if Soft here... can have a band which is Alternative based maybe can surive in Singapore..

why Alternative<<< because Singapore have lots of people which doesent accept what we play...

what do you think????

Actually I agree with parablue on actually having a producer to come in and work with the band.

Unless someone in the band has a natural born talent for these kinds of music arrangements it think that is definitely a must have for local bands if they want to make a proper record.

Music arrangements is definitely important in making a good song and album as well.

Yeah, I agree with parablue as well.

Having a good producer help the band realise their musical dream. I remember during the recording of our album the problems we had trying to communicate our ideas to the sound engineer, becos we didn't have a producer who knew how to use the studio to the fullest advantage. So much good equipment but nobody can use it to the fullest potential.

It's a big pity. But the music business really consists of two parts: the music and the business. The business is very harsh, looking at bottomlines constantly. The music generated by the band should not be affected directly by that. THat's why it's always good for bands to have managers. Let them secure the gigs, payments, etc, bands just concentrate on putting a good show.

If you want to make money (or rather make a living) from playing music, but if you are not savvy enough to handle the making money bit, then you should look for a manager to help you along the way...

Any managers willing to make money from music???
