Money spent getting your "tone"?

well.. being a poor, starting out guitarist... there are a few amps and effects i'm considering to get.. seen used DS-2s, 1s, MT-2s and overdrives on this forum. but one question still strikes me.

the other guitarists i know (some of them are friends i made from here) all say they've been through lots of pickups, effects, amps and guitars, trying to find that TONE.. just wondering if anyone has found theirs already?

i heard my "want-to-achieve" sound from good charlotte's THE RIVER ending solo.. its a clean and strong lead... but i'm still unsure about seeking its sound. its at 2.45sec+...

its random, but i'm sure others will be envious if you managed to get your tone by just testing out a little and spending really little money...

so if you've found your tone, do post your gear and amount spent so far trying to get it ok? will really help me gauge how much to spend... its pretty hard getting cash, its the first thing on a beginner's mind... so thanks!

cheers.

for me..i dun really have "that sound in my head" kinda thing..

its juz a hit or miss..its either i like it or i dont..and my taste changes..

yeah correct.

its very difficult to actually acheive THAT tone in your head. and usually
by the time you achieved your taste has changed and you are vying for another kinda tone.

for myself, i know i want to acheive a RAW in your face kinda dirty tone for my rythms and I'd like to max out gain and get a socalled 'sensitive' type of thing going on for my solos.

and the amount i have spent is... errr haha alot.
the part that makes me feel like hitting myself is i actually found
it in a humble bossDS1 Ultra mod.

but with that said. most of the tone is really in your fingers. its your playing technique that really matters.
example: i can give santana's rig but id bet my last dollar we would never be able to get that 'vibe' in the tone.

I found my tone!

Lead tone - Michael Bolton's Go the Distance guitar solo. Here's a link:

I don't know the gear used and Michael Landau has probably too many to search for anyway.

Rhythm - the classic Les Paul into Marshall tone. Can be heard in the power chords at the Art of Life chorus portion.

Other favourite lead tones: PRS modern eagle in this video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AE1ocn11VL8

It has a super distinct tone which cuts through the mix with alot of muscle. It's the black/white (charcoal coloured) guitar.

Lastly my favourite super strat tone is John Petrucci's solo in the Spirit Carries On. There's something just so captivating about it. It cuts through the mix so powerfully as well but in a different way from the modern eagle. Dream theatre is one of the few bands which live sound is nicer sounding imo than their studio tracks.

i see... maybe i needa expand my vocab of music... and yep, now and then a lil guitar solo comes and i think wow, nice sound. but then only that one in good charlotte got me totally enthu over it and blew me away...

I got my tone in my head via the following formula...

Mahogany bodied guitar, rosewood (or its equivalent) fretboard, maple neck... HSS or HH config.

Then just the blackstone overdrive and skreddy screwdriver.

Costly? I suppose.

But I'd retain consistant feel and sound across both solid state and tube amps. Of course a tube amp feels slightly different but I don't use my dirt pedals to push the tubes into overdrive, so I don't think a lot of the dynamics would stem from the un-overworked tubes.

And Marty Friedman.

tone is a vast ocean, i following the following

1) Anything that doesnt do nice palm mute or distortion, its in
2) Anything that produce sound and with a input/output jack its in
3) Anything that degrade the quality of guitar tone, its in
4) Anything that make guitar sounds bad or weird, its in
5) Anything that can be manipulate beyond recognition either real time or thru software, its in

As for guitar, any guitar will do as long it generate signal. Preference is single coil

Amp- From tube amp to practise amp, anything is fine. As long theres sound, its all good

The River Solo?? 8)

Its played by Synyster Gates..of A7X

Maybe i can help u figure out his tone....

He uses a Seymour Duncan invader pups...Both neck and bridge...

As for the distortion u might wanna figure out urself....

Its switch is of course on the neck pickup though....As the tone is really strong and warm

yeah the solo is played by him indeed. the 1st time i heard it i was like..

' eh this guitar sound sounds familiar.. very similar to A7X.'

then i went to google it and found out about it.

chances are right. his distortion is coming straight out from his amps. these guys dont really like to use pedals to distort.

you might wanna find out what amps he uses. and move on from there.

KK....i list u all the things he used...
Like wad gibbytones said is true...they hate using pedals...take those distortion from amps...

Well he uses a shecter Avenger Hellraiser series....He had it custom made...

As for the amp....it is mesa boogie.....

Go figure out

Pathein, I dun like u.

U make the bad look good.

how cud you,. bro shred, i thought we are best friend forever!

I think the only way we can sort our issues out, is to meet up and make horrible sound using the best gear people rave about!! How how?

I am ON for it.

Hahaha. I will try to play non-noted-notes and chordal forms that break the meaning of chords!

Seriously though, I'm thinking how to make the skreddy screwdriver sound... bad... :P Blackstone can sound bad but the screwdriver ehhhh... i need your help. And nothing violent please.

I spend a few carton boxes of guitar pedals that are now still inside the carton boxes and a few guitars that grew by itself and now are still inside their bags.

In the end, I only need a 6 string acoustic.

heh, bro shred, the key to make booteek sound bad, is to play badly. That one confirmed will make it sound bad..

another way is to up every knob on the pedal, tuned guitar to EEEEEE, unplay the guitar by hitting notes all over the fretboard, using hairclip, soldering iron, grinding guitar round crotch area etc

Can confirmed, all the gear people rave about, will sound as bad as possible in all sort of ways!

how, can is do?

I am... I ... i... can't do it!!!

NOOOOOOO!!!! *heavy metal dethlock Noooooo!*

I can play badly though I must be blind-folded with 2 arms tied behind my back. There's a start at least!!!!!!

heh, it is harder to unplay a guitar then spending years to play the instrument properly.

thats it, i shall use my chinese flute to duel your flame geetar! Bet our tone will make everyone weep!
