METALLICA

Dave Mustaine is lame because hes in a band called Megadeth.

As for John Petrucci - Some guitarists can play super fast and super well, but also super lame e.g. Dream Theatre.

Kirks solos are not super fast and not super difficult, but they are not by any means super lame. He may play pentatonic alot, but his solos have BALLS. You dont get that ball crushing feeling with Petrucci. Its not there. Slash was also very pentatonic oriented, but that guy can harden pants.

Petrucci wears tight clothing.

Lame? You mean the name sounds lame? Or the music? If it's the latter then you're probably not worth my time talking to by labelling Rust in Peace, Peace Sells and Countdown to extinction as lame... And Megadeth is a kickass name, at least they didn't steal it.

again u donno wat yr talking about.

1. Dream Theater's songs can't b lame. they realli well arranged and thought-out for songs wif weird timings that changes ever so often within the song.
juz listen to songs like honor thy father, streams of consciousness n my glass prison.

2. JP> kirk definately. even though kirk was my inspiration 2 make me pick up my guitar. i believe dat if some1 can make a kid aspire 2 b like him, he should b considered a guitar hero. ok out of point here. but kirk definitely cannot rape jp, figuratively, and literally. JP covered metallica songs like MOP, i doubt kirk can cover Streams of Consciousness. but i still love kirk. :D

3. JP CAN make a guy explode in his pants. not onli harden(if it's yr pants dat hardens n not yr *ahem :P ) u realli shuld listen 2 him. afterall, he did play e ending solo of the cover of Comfortably Numb, wif was IMO one of e most amazing solos dat i hav ever heard.

but actually, i don think dave mustaine was dat bad as a person... afterall, he deserved 2 b pitied after getting kicked out of metallica. i watch an interview wif him and lars, he said something about not being given a second chance, and james n lars were brother dat he would protect. i think e link was posted somewhere in this forum. quite emotional actually...

guntoheart, how can dream theater be lame?? petrucci owns kirk anytime.

superfast but lame = dragonforce

Nay, we have to listen to John P in an improvisation solo.

His Rock Discipline Vid, has an improv, its on youtube. Has jazz influences, fantastic speed, articulate and precise.

I think Kirk, nowadays, would stick to pentatonic shape 1, and turn on the auto wah.

You should listen to that Santana Album with kirk on it? The moment he plays (I was in HMV browsing), my eyes rolled major time.
You got it.
Auto wah.
Pentatonics.
Auto wah.

Though, of course, JP is far from being THE guy for improvisation, I'd say the guy's skill, schooling and out of the pentatonic box playing, is 2 notched above kirk.

Actually. I'm being bias-ed. I really don't enjoy many metallica solos, I like to listen to their rhythm more often than not.

Isn't it cool, how every (almost) song is in E minor? So they can do medleys? Cool no?

whoaaaa.... now Dream theater is in the picture!!!

in my opinion.

James can riff. Esp the chugga chugga stuff.
Dave can riff but less of the chugga chugga and more of the complex stuff. Listen to Hanger 18.
Kirk can solo. But the same old same old solo.
Petrucci? Man that guitarist is above and beyond all the guitarist above in term of technicality and wide musical knowledge. BUT THIS IS A METALLICA THREAD!!!

How come no one talk about Marty Friedman? That guy PWNS. Any shredder who have released a solo album of more than 90% clean guitar and got Kitaro to produce PWNS em all.

I got Marty's Introduction album.

90% clean tones.

Its especially sweet to listen to, a little boring, but what to do when all u have is an explorer guitar with 1 hot humbucker? :P Kidding.

Marty's got that touch, the feel. Amazing.

JP, i don't like his playing much, to me, its quite boring, but tis above kirk.

Oh btw, Marty's got some clips on youtube, playing some of his new albums' stuff. Pretty cool. Not a fan of the tone though.

The remastered/remixed tone on youthanasia is nice. I like that tone.

I love metallica! Their riffs are really godlike man. Agree the solos couldve been better. I think the black album was still ok lah but cant stand him using an autowah =0. Shredcow i heard that track with santana too! Could tell it was kirk hammet on the spot haha

moo moo... the album i was refering to was Scenes.

but must bear in mind, it was released during those days where distorto mondo chugga chugga was still THE fashion.

this album is a gem.

hey... this is a metallica thread!!! hahahaha...

I wonder what Kirk learnt from Satriani.. :?

Master of Puppets is still one of my favourite albums, with their introduction to Mesas, with one of their greatest instrumentals..RIP Cliff!

Friedman is truly above them, and being self-taught he must have had alot of determination, drive, and passion for the music. I don't think I can even reach(or smell) his level even with some guitar god as my teacher.

Ah!
Alrighty. :P

But i tell u, assuming introduction is similiar to scenes, when I first got Introduction, as a young guitarist, I didnt like it. I thought it was utterly boring.

Where was the distorto mondo maddness?!?!

And now, I'm like. Hmmm.. Great stuff!!!

How we age...

hahaha.... luckily during those days i was messing around with "new age" stuff from andreas vollenweider(sp?) and mike oldfield as background music for my studies.

Marty Friedman's Scenes was a GREAT addition to the list.

superfast but lame = dragonforce

i agree with you on DragonForce. They are definitely lame.

But bro, Petrucci is no doubt a more articulate and virtuosic guitar player than kirk but thats aside the point. Kirk plays guitar to melt your face and kick your balls, but Petrucci plays his guitar to look cool. Just look at his fkin rack. Theres more stuff in there than i have pubic hairs. Hes prb clean shaven anyway. Also, he wears tight clothing. He performs in clubbing attire.

about petrucci's racks - if he wants to use them for his desired tone, why not? and take note that he uses a wide range of tones from his guitar, both clean and dirty.

kirk has racks too, but he chooses to have them for his own sound, like his auto-wah.

Err. i think we should stop bringing petrucci in, but i disagree with you totally that pertrucci plays the guitar to look good. totally. kirk looks more like the kind to me.

IMHO :D

both player have their distinct sound and style of playing..
they have sold millions and millions of records which means ppl like them for what they are..their solos/music/everything..

if u say u dont like them, so wat..they have millions left who still love them..
FU&* U ALL.
if u guys are good, sell your records like them..
