Local Musicians That Do Not Support Others

I guess this post is slightly controversial in nature.
On one hand, it can be seen as picking on somebody's comment (whoever that person is) for their negativity when there are plenty that flood the Internet every day

On the other hand, it is a forum and it is a topic to discuss about, for better or worse :)

But for every action there is an equal opposing reaction. As much as he has the right to be negative about something, we have the right to question his negativity - OR ignore it. I have been on the blunt end of reactions too on previous posts here :) But I felt that in this case, it was important to bring it out and hear the points of views of others. It's great that everybody participated both for and against bringing it up in the first place :)

Why bother, dude? There will be such peeps around all the time.

I couldn't be arsed anymore. Just do whatever you can until you cannot.

There are better things to do in life like Googling for Jessica Gomes photos.

Till then, this will be my only contribution to this thread.

Edit: Goddammit! They removed my photo!!!

yeah cleared air

and finally the air is cleared. there're so many different views of how people see the comment silvertone13 made. be it right or wrong, i guess it is our own perception how we wanna go for or against it. anyways, since this chapter is over, i'll hope to see more local musicians around man. rock on the local scene, and hopefully juxtapose and della madre were not wrongly accused, and best of all, hope there'll be more musicians in sg rocking balls out.

cheers taiji

Because I refuse to let cynicism make me jaded :)
No matter how many arses come along, no matter how many setbacks and dumb idiots come our way, I cannot not give a damn because not giving a damn just means only caring for oneself. And I cannot bring myself to become a 30, 40 something year old and look back with resentment on the scene which has made me and everyone else here the people we are today.

If we don't give a damn, who will? Somebody else? That is what those who do nothing will always be thinking. I don't want to be like that.

The next stage of the local scene's evolution is in the works. :) Wait and see, good things will come in the year to come. I promise you that. ;)

don't mind me , but what happened to Ronin ? since you said you WERE from ronin.

i think infighting and bitching makes the local scene more interesting

just like all the bullshit occuring in table tennis, a sport that we would otherwise not give a damn about

When caught in an argument, it is crucial to address only the issue at hand, with an aim to serving the greater good, and not let ego or a concern for reputation take over. Ego can obscure original good intentions, or over time, engender a deluded sense of self, leading to more personal suffering. One must always be mindful whether one engages in an activity/discussion out of selflessness, or ego.

This is a hard principle to keep to, for everyone, but it represents progress in inner cultivation. You can call it spiritual progress if you like.

i think that it's true that we shouldn't blindly support any and every loca band that we know of because yea not every band out there is good. instead of putting these not-so-good bands down, why not help them out by giving them advice on how they can improve here and there; especially if you personally know the members of the band. i mean the population size in singapore is already so small, this industry even smaller. if we kill off each other by shooting harsh criticisms at those we can't seem to relate to, there'd be no band that would be widely accepted and we wouldn't even be able to break out of the local market and explore the market overseas. and when there's a band that makes it big out of singapore, electrico and the great spy experiment to mention examples, we should all be proud of them for having worked hard and putting singapore on the map of the music scene abroad (:

It's alright if some of us are indifferent to others amongst us- if it's not your cup of tea, that's okay. What's disgusting is that some of us go out of our way to put others down. There's only one reason that I can think of to do this, and that is JEALOUSY. Why would I care if other people support and like a band that I don't, except for my own personal insecurities?

Does anybody notice that the biggest insults and hatred for local music comes from within the scene itself? Because people who don't give a damn can't be bothered to waste their time on us. Gossip and small talk are to be expected and I'd even go so far as to say that it can be somewhat healthy for the scene- assuming we are all considerate, understanding and rational (quite a big assumption there.) But to go out on a smear campaign against another band?

If I thought a band, (Astroninja, let's say) could be better in some way, I would let them know. If their music is not to my taste, then I wouldn't listen to it. But why would I go and insult them on a YouTube page? If I think they don't deserve to be popular, well, that's just my opinion- hundreds of fans across the world think differently.

PS: There is no such thing as "doesn't deserve to be popular." Everybody has to work hard at building relationships with an audience and sustaining their interest. If XYZ band can be popular without playing good music, why can't YOUR band be popular despite playing supposedly better music? It's because they're doing something right and you're not, and complaining about it isn't going to do you any favours.

Paul McCartney mentioned in an interview that he found it quite funny when Oasis said they'd be bigger than The Beatles, and his words to any band in the world that claims that is "Good luck, son." Yet we don't see him posting insulting comments on Oasis videos now, do we?

That's because he's got better things to do, has nothing to prove, and has his own music and career to worry about. As do the rest of us. Insulting other people in your field, whether you are a musician, athlete, artist, whatever- is a sign of incompetency, insecurity or inadequacy on your part. If you honestly don't feel they deserve the glory that they're getting from their own hard work, then go out and achieve greater success yourself. Because nobody thinks highly of armchair critics.
