Local Musicians That Do Not Support Others

everyone has their own opinion of whatever they feel like saying..
give the kid a break guys..
no point in boasting of what band you are from, where have you played, who you are playing with, how many albums you have made and blah blah blah..if someone crtitices your music..so be it,im sure that lots of bands have many fans and haters,so in my book, critics will always be there.
it ain`t fun without critics...
many well known musicians have got worse off critics and they just carry on making their own music without a care in the world:)
anyway,it`s just my 2 cents worth guys..cheers!

lets all just forgive that guy and start suporting local music man. the scene here in singapore is already so small. and to silvertone13, u better apologise to your brother eh, if not i come find you. hahas.

okie!

yeah, sorry about that remark bro...lets forgive and forget..hahas..anyway,"its good to appreciate others music as well as to appreciate our own music..however,its better if all music are deeply appreciated hehehe"..thats my saying:D

But

Should you support local, just cos its local?

What if they suck?

If you like to ask your friends to, eh eh buy my EP buy my EP. That means they buy it cos they're your friends.

If they like it they'll ask for it themselves. You know what I mean?

You should want them to like it for the music, not just cos its local, and we're all friends. If it sucks it sucks. If it rocks, it rocks.

But music is subjective anyway.

(like so many 'that's gay!', 'omfg that's fake!' comments on youtube on random music ALL the time.)

Blueshoes,

the tides will change one day,
as all the imposters will be blown away,
like feather falling out of the softest wings,
will come a band pure and supreme

i don't think it's the issue of local musicians not wanting to support each other but rather like what blueshoes said, if they simply do not like the music, why would they even support them? wouldn't it be rather hypocritical for them to say things like,"hey, your music's really good." when they don't like it? that doesnt mean that they have to be mean but maybe just keep their opinions to themselves.

what's more important is that they still retain respect for other musicians.

another thing i don't quite get is why people like to compare local bands to overseas bands? they say that local bands sound similar to overseas bands and there's nothing really different. but the thing is, it's all music, why compare? and if we take into account nothing else but the fact that these people are Singaporeans and that they painstakingly started from scratch to produce their music for us, isn't that enough validation of their worth? why would you wanna compare them with artistes from say North America?
Isn't it enough to know that good music exists in our local scene instead of trying to find it somewhere else and then trying to mould yourself and fit into that context?

-sorry for the long rant-

Interestingly, I'm reading this article from LIVE! Mag which says, "Does anyone sound original anymore? Western bands rip each other off all the time - why should Singaporean bands be singled out?" - written by an Australian lady, no doubt.

how true. bands all over the world rip each other off all the time. its incredibly hard to be original. but to be honest i dont really like some singaporean bands precisely because they sound like a cheap version of *insert band name here*. some of them really have nothing to offer

evolution vs innovation really.

evolution is me doing the same thing, but adding my own flavour to it and over time it becomes my thing

innovation is me doing something and suddenly saying wtf and completely doing it different

i think popular music favours the latter, but the former comes in 20 yr cycles

who are the ones have nothing to offer?

I saw that video on Youtube, and I saw the post by Silvertone13. I literally blew up. Anyway, I certainly hope he has learnt something, and above all I hope that things are peaceful now.

Bands can be original! Which is why my favourite bands are RATM, Muse and Incubus.. They always seek to change their sound after each album..
Local examples? Look at Peepshow! All their songs sound different from each other..
It is important to keep your influences at the back, but still subtly show that you're influenced by another musician IMO.. After all.. Music is about sharing!

i don't think its nice to name them, is it? perhaps it is due to them being young still, hopefully, they'll develop some sort of character or personal style.

on the other hand there are local bands around i really love, despite their perceived lack of originality, just because they have a special meaning to me. let's take Electrico for example, they are pretty normal pop rock, nothing too original, but the moment i hear david tan's voice i just have to smile. not to mention they have some sweet melodies too.
