Hi analogmann,
Thanks for asking. I'll answer in 2 parts:
1. The 3 false starts were not due to software failure or device failure. It was due to a bad and EXTREMELY loud and deafening signal being sent to my in-ears from the main mixer board (this signal was also sent to my bassist too). It was so loud that I had to stop or my ear drums would've been blown out. During the sound check, it took about 15 mins for the sound team to get a signal to my monitoring device (the signal that you would get for the floor monitor). However, when they finally managed to send it through, it was blasting loud and extremely distorted. They tried to fix the issue but after trying for 20 mins, I told them to just forget it and to stop the signal from coming in since it will be impossible for us to play with our ears being blown into pieces. They said ok and the stage hand shouted across the floor to have the signal cut and stopped.
However, during the show, seconds before we were supposed to play, the signal suddenly came back on! And therefore there is no way both my bassist and I could play. The worst thing is, it happened 3 times before it mysteriously disappeared. If you need to know what signal came through, it was the screaming from the crowd which a microphone must have picked up but it was EXTREMELY LOUD, distorted and DEAFENING!
2. Just in case you didn't notice, we are a 3 piece band (guitar, bass and drums) but we also had an ago-ago bell playing, keyboard and tambourine playing....so, no, the software wasn't just simply playing a click track for me to play in time with, but rather, playing half a rhythm section worth of instrumental parts for us.
Yes, in any other non-body part damaging situation, we would have kept playing if the software fails.....we may not be a top touring band, but we do have significant touring experience to know so. However, if the show was live, someone (the producer/stage manager etc etc) would've definitely stood out to explain the situation...but since it was gonna be edited, there was no reason to, especially when we were rushing for precious studio time.
And finally, yes, pearl did endorse a drummer that can play without a metronome....I really don't know your reasons for stating my endorsement details but really, who can't play music without a metronome? Its playing with that really challenges most musicians right?
