Is there a local music scene

Then again i applaude Electrio for its dedication... they have been very inspiring... they managed to do a tour in Australia. That is remarkable.

^^

when "electrio" was playing at tampines cc, bands like plain sunset and my precious were touring places like new zealand, austrailia and japan. and they were diy indie bands, building up contacts as they went along, the things young start-up bands should be doing.

and your definition of "limits" is really describing markets ainnit? as long as a band is of a certain quality (read: international) and they market themselves to the right demographic, be it local or overseas (like our mandarin counterparts), they will more than likely achieve commercial success.

it's not really the country we're in that's the problem. we just need to be right original, catchy stuff and market ourselves properly.

by the way, this thread is very irritating. can we please stop talking about topics like this that will still be open for debate 10 years down the road?

the chinese market is one to milk, because chinese artists one shot hoots everything. they sing, act, dance, appear in variety shows, and occasionally get involved in sex scandals. the fans and media lap up every single drop of it. please tell me it's not about the money

but anyway

this is where i am confused. alot of good bands make good music regardless of their geographical boundaries. i don't give a shit about whether some multi million dollar record label signs them, or whether they tour antarctica, or whether i will actually tune in to shitty local radio stations just to hear them play.

what is the end to the strife of musicians in singapore, or anywhere for that matter? and how would you define "making it big"? i am led to believe that the 'success' some of us refer to is commercial success; in which case, whether or not a band becomes successful commercially does not do anything to compromise their ability to make good music, which is what we, the listeners want

commercial success or fame are not on the agenda for some of the most successful musicians in the local industry today. if 'limits' can only exist within a definition, and is something relative to the context to which it is applied, then they cannot truly be limits after all because they are arbitrary; which is precisely the reason why we still regard these musicians as 'successful'.

are we making good music to warrant such high expectations of the 'scene' delivering its rewards? once again, unless you can prove that the disparity between the number of opportunities for local artists and the amount of QUALITY in the local talent pool is biased towards the latter, i reiterate that the fault lies within the individuals. and as musicians who make up these 'individuals', it meaningless for us to criticise the 'scene'

See you in 10 years time, i will still be here talking about topics like that. Haha.

got heart to play can already. no need to play until hong kong and china and taiwan. if the motive behind a person taking up music is to be famous, then forget it lah.

Haha. You see on TV how many singers can actually sing. Of course the frame is a very attractive factor that is why you see so many idiots auditioning for singapore idol. (3000+!)

Different people got different purpose ma... some people just sit relax one corner and play... some people got a purpose... some people want to get famous.. so many reason.

Doesn't mean cause they have a different purpose other then you they should forget it lah.

What people fail to realise is that, record companies are a money making institution. They will not give you love until you have made them heaps of cash. Getting signed is not a golden ticket and something to aim for. Playing the indoor stadium and tourning the world like you are on a permanent holday is a fantasy.

BE PASSIONATE AND ENJOY PLAYING MUSIC.

"Its my life... its now or ever... and i don't wanna live forever!"

Its the dream man, come on baby...

My teacher is Bong btw.

Yup, Bong is arguably the best bass player in SG. He teaches at YAMAHA and does recordings occassionally for the chinese music industry. Then again, i feel that there is a limit of how far we can go in the music industry.

Well, I'm glad that you have a great teacher. But Bong is Bong and you are you. He gets the jobs and the rest of us donch. I guess his talents and experience are better than you and us to secure those jobs. Respect.

Let me explain "limit"

To put things in perspective, there is a limit... and i hope that one day someone is gonna prove my analogy wrong.

To some people, being able to perform in front of an audience is a dream but to others, it is the world.

^^

Sure there are limits. So gotch limits, no need to do anything already, I suppose. There are trends as well, maybe female bassit (hurhurhur...) will be popular again. These days, I is keeps seeing female singers fronting rock bands.

Living life to 100% lifeforce also cannot guarantee that in 10 years time you would still be involved/listening local music.

So study hard, work hard, save hard and play music hard.

Make money from your music?? Very hard. :D

That's why true musicians despise "musicians" like them! =D
wheeee

*looks around wondering if there are any such people in this forum*

hehe, this thread is amazing, if we spend equal amount of time from beginning of thread till now, it prolly enough time to record, arranged and mix down a decent track for listening pleasure!

Hey, Uncle Trent did Ghosts I - IV in 10 weeks man. A track? From the multiple threads which inherently talk about the same topic and the amount of time used to type all those posts, I think Uncle Trent can release a few albums already.

Why talk so much?

Read yesterday MONEY page in Straits Times: SME Spotlight. They highlighted certain individuals who pursued their goals and pushed for a change. Bartop dancing was one, sandcastle building in ECP was one and if I'm not wrong, *scape @ Youth Park was one such idea.

Please go and do something.

Talk does not cook rice or bake potatoes. And a certain female rocker told me, "Talk is cheap..."

From the moment we enter life, we are already taking risks in every step we take. If we don't push our boundaries or step into the unknown, how will we know if we'll succeed?

It's such a typical Singaporean mentality to say 'Eh, this one cannot, no future, forget it. Let's do something safer and sure got ricebowl'. (I blame the men in white for this, and even they are now attempting to get us out of this mindset indoctrinated in us since 1965.)

It's not as though one cannot make a living out of music. I think it IS possible. An option is that one lowers the standards of one's lifestyle. Wanting to become a rockstar is admittedly a tough daydream, but hey. Doing music for a living can be done when there's contentment doing something one's passionate about, despite the little returns it may yield. Rockstardom comes with that stroke of luck and (still) a lot of hard work.

Nothing is easy lah. There're always sacrifices to be made. The question is -- how BADLY do you desire it?

And from there, what you decide to do will make all the difference.

Eh, bro Agingyouth bro, I didn't see your post before I posted mine! Well, I guess our posts reflect each other's sentiments.

And I think I know who's the female rocker!

I just wanna make pedals, brew and drink tons of beer and eat good food all the time. who cares about the music... we'll leave that to the musicians! hahahaha
