Is there a local music scene

Or you got go to Us, get " wit a crew boyz " and start random stupid chants like smack that and be famous on mtv then in Singapore, yeah. No?

MadWereWolfBoy, Singapore Idol is indeed the biggest exposure for any artiste possible. You just need to have lots and lots of good stuff to show.

If we can't even make it in our own country, I dont think we can go other country and win over their audience. It is never easier anywhere else. Nowadays with Internet, you just have to be good and people will want you. If anyone feel that they are good but not given a chance, just shoot a video of your performance and upload it. If it is good, you will get your audience.

SI does indeed gives contestants a huge amount of exposure to the local audience. But does joining it, or does winning the title necessarily mean that the Singapore Idol has succeeded or is successful in our local music scene? I am not doubting their ability to survive as full-time musicians but..

Are people like Taufik, Sylvester, Hady, Jonathan and gang giving people, especially locals, an acurate impression of our local music scene? When people talk about a music scene, does Justin Timberlake, Jay Chou, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne and he rest of the pop crew comes to mind?

Pop is a culture, not a scene. If a topic such as music scene is being discussed, and a pop "scene" comes to mind, then we're really missing the point on a local music scene.

But I still need to point out something that really bugs me. Does winning something as simple as a TV competition (such as SI, Superband etc) that lasts less than a year, really gives the winner(s) the experience/right/respect as compared to artistes and bands who make it on their own from scratch? If so, then I would have to concede that to "succeed" in Singapore's local music scene, we should just stop doing what we are doing, and we must join Singapore Idol.

but the main question is, are you still gonna quit playing bass cos the scene is not ready for you?

Cause there is no future and there is no meaning to it?

"relax on corner and play" may sound like what the world means to them in music but i am definitely not that type lol...

He's a Citibank Investment/ Private Banker for the past few years. Can't remember... Doing very well, I heard. How was the KL trip?

Toldja it's a good career choice after hanging up your bass.

Hmm.

As a player whose band is just starting out (4-5 months for current lineup), we don't really set ourselves any goals apart from creating music that we feel would sound good. Then we bring in friends / people to give comments, so that we can have various views from people who are not only musicians, but simply ordinary people. So far there have been both favourable and negative remarks, and we're definitely taking note. It's about having a sense of humility and then having a clear direction.

And about NS curbing creative energy? I'm not sure about other camps and their rules etc, but I'm in a unit that's operational and I have my guitar in my bunk. I'm still actively writing songs both in camp and on weekends and I'm making a conscious effort to bring in new material during every weekend jam session to my guys so that it will never ever get boring. My point here is that for the ball to start rolling, don't be afraid to make the first push.

But fyi my band is a trio, and although I am the primary writer, I still actively seek out the others' opinions not only because they are fellow players, but because they are in this with me together and everybody has the right to make a decision or make a comment. I rarely make a move without their express approval. My point here is regarding group effort, not just individual passion.

We'll be auditioning for Stardust 2008 this coming weekend, and I do hope we learn something out of it, and maybe a few people will notice our brand of rock and roll. I'm still working on gig contacts.. and we will have a new demo out soon :)

I also feel that if anybody reckons that being passionate about music has to be justified by instant fame + money then they really gotta wake up their idea... nothing is going to fall into one's lap just by sitting in front of their com and waiting for people to reply their threads.

Stand up Stand up, stand up for your right!
Stand up Stand up, don't give up the fight!
