Talking about Taufiq,

Hey doode,

The MediaCorp contract stipulated that the finalist were contractually bound to the station. You can't perform with any external groups. Taufik left Bonfide Vintage Flav'r, his hip-hop RnB collective and Daphne Khoo left All Countries as well.

Well, greener pastures, I guess...

Ya man.. but if comin from the point of the band members, it's can sometimes feel rather bitter too.. start together, only one man shine and the shinny star have to leave, while the rest still struggling to shine... :( haiz.. greener pastures.. i wonder if I'll do the same if i were him. We never know till it happens rite? :D

Still, anyone who shine from Singapore, we should be happy for him!!! :)

oh wow..i remember A.W.O.L's live appearance on a tv show called Live on 5 that time. Gurmit was still...erm..gurmit..and vernetta lopez and mark richmond were VJs and a grouchy dude called SMONG.

Naked's "Don't Cry" is nice
Padres, Oddfellows, Black Sun, Watchmen, Humpback Oak, Concave Scream
Stompin Ground, Neural Vibes, Goofy Grooves..West Side (WTC Amphitheatre era)..not to forget Art Fazil as a solo musician & part of Rausyanfikir. Blues Kepala Batu!~~

i'll download it soon, no prob.

Ronny is a very cool/nice/softspoken/humble hell of a drummer. My Precious cd is out, i got it 4 $7! its hardcore with 2 ladies vocalists! hahahahhha! very slamming... if i'm not wrong, they toured japan a few months back.

WTC Amphitheatre, gigs by the bay. hahahahhha... replaced by Esplanade now... cool times... remember the Nunsex gig there? there were bands performing there on a weekly basis... hmmmmmm...

hahaha! i jus download the song without noticing who sang it.. i was like.. eh sound like daphne khoo.. -_-" okok so it's that shortie cutie from all countries. haha love her vocals, sweet.

Strange!!! I can see from these list, nobody seemed to be aware or cared too much about bands that actually had lots of airplay and had won awards....I see mostly(I have to emphasize again; "Mostly") "underground" bands mentioned here?

Hmmm...which brings me to think; If Singapore's music scene, generally speaking, has always been trying to steer clear from recognizing "Pop" or "Commercial" bands....Hmmm?

that was the case in the 90s. The scene was mainly "indie" so most bands and labels kept themselves low profile. Besides, the scene was just recovering from the local music ban. Even Passion 99.5 had an "underground" feel to it. Nowadays, the big labels are picking up local bands hence it feels that local music is more "commercial" now. No way would you see as many local bands selling their CDs at HMV in the 90s.

OMG Swing Singapore. Those were good times. Shame about the stampede

Thanks for the feedback!! Really appreciate it!! :)

To add-on to the list of local music achievers, let me think of some of these names that had won the award(s)(Not in order of preference);
1) NAKED (Thanks for the earlier mention dude, you remembered): aka Brian C, He's won a COMPASS award for having most airplay for that year for "Don't Cry".
2) KICK: Won P10 local song award as well. Had lots of airplay for "Jane".Went No.1 in P10 charts.
3) DNA/RADIOACTIVE: Won COMPASS award as well for highest airplay for "Changes". Went No.2 in P10 charts.
4) CONCAVE SCREAM: COMPASS award for best new song.
5) LILAC SAINTS: COMPASS award for best new song, I think.(I'm not sure about this guys, forgive me if I'm wrong, please re-quote on this if any of you guys read this)
6) HIP TO THE HYPE: One of the earliest Hip Hop bands(if not, THE only at that time) in the circuit. Produced/Co-produced now Hip Hop/R&B greats like URBAN EXCHANGE(now, PARKING LOT PIMPS)
7) DON RICHMOND: Most recent COMPASS award winner as well.
8) STONE REVIVAL: COMPASS award winner.
9) ART FAZIL(not a band, but still a great contributor)..
10) LIZARDS CONVENTION(Thanks for the earlier mention again!!): COMPASS award as well as P10 award.
11) LOVEHUNTERS: P10 award.. "Angel in the night"...How can anyone forget!!

Most of the guys above are still very much active in the local music scene. Some professionally, some in the background acting as producers, composers, arrangers, TV Radio producers/talents, incredible website designers...etc etc....

I must say, we've gone a long way!!!! HAHAHAHAH!!!

Cheers!!

ahhh..oh man..how can i forget Kick. Jai the guitarist now is a mediacorp artiste..malay songs..talented fella
and that Jane song..hehe...look at me..look at you~~
anyone have that song?

Art Fazil has made it big in UK a few years back. He sang his songs in the local pubs..
i must say he had a better response over there. and he sang in malay some more

Lovehunters now play in a pub i think..if i'm not wrong.

but yeah..we've gone a long way
the older generation haven't start on the 60s and 70s bands yet..and the golden 80s. :supz:

"Don Cry" was indeed a brilliant piece of work. And I remember " Changes".. it had it's airplay too rite? Wat was the female vocals' name again?

I remember there used to be also a band call Psychadellic Ants. Do you guys remember them? If i don't recall wrongly, the vocals sounded like Pear Jam! Damn Shiok wor!!! But I heard they disbanded after one of the guitarist passed away due to some Intestinal Problems.. really sad..

..

"Life's full of changes, they say"

Love that song. Was a band by radioactive (i think) if you go to the compass website, you'll see the singer there.

As for Kick! think the singer kenah fined for that infamous celebrity drug case right? with cheryl fox and sheik haikel?
